Hi all,

We are back to possibly driving again. We'll be coming from the Chicago area, but I wanted to know from people all over IL what is the longest it has taken you and the shortest time its taken you to drive. We've been all over the state, so I know how long it takes to get from home to many spots, so that's why I would like all IL opinions. Thanks so much!

We live in Kankakee County, normally takes about 17 hours, but has taken closer to 20 hours on the way home because of construction traffic.

From Springfield, Il (1060 miles) - has taken as little as 16 hours - when it was just me and the wife with basically 2-3 gas/food/bathroom stops for minimal amounts of time. With 3 kids now - seems to take about 18-20 hours (usually closer to 18 though) with basically 2 - 1 hour food/gas stops. We go down 55 to route 4 then 64 to Mt. Vernon to 24 to Chattanooga and the 75 on in.

Hope this helps.

From about an hour southwest of Chicago, it takes us 19 to 22 hours depending if we stop for sit down meals. We have 4 girls and we do have to stop quite abit! The last time we drove we ran into really bad storms in Kentucky, actual tornados. I was terrified, no place to pull over and we couldn't see the road. I swore if we made it back, I would NEVER drive again. This is coming from someone who has to take Xanax before boarding a plane.

Rockford - about 20 hours, give or take. I drove straight through, only stopping for gas and food, doing both stops in one...

it takes me about 18 hours, from the orland area. I just get on I57 and go south to southeren Ill, then pick up 24 all the way to Chattanoga.
The nice thing about I-57 is there's not alot of traffic on it and it sure beats going through the construction zones in Ill and Ind. You also don't deal with the Indy traffic and bypass also.

i live in chicago near o'hare my husband drives straight thru the shortest time was 17 hrs the longest was 20 hrs depending on weather and traffic it seems to go faster if you leave on a weekday (mon.-thurs.) verses a weekend (fri-sun.)

I just wanted to say thank you for all your help on this - we are still debating, but you all have been a help!

looks like we will be driving also.Airfare for 4 is about $900, and I refuse to pay that price. What is the half way point to stop at.It seems that I will be doing most of the driving and I will feel better if we stopfor the night.

Halfway point would be just before chattanooga. If you can make it to Atlanta in one day, thats about a 12 hour drive, it makes the next days drive real easy only about 6 hours. :car:

We're in Chicago (just south of Berwyn) and we take the 57/24/75 route too. The least amount of driving time has been 19 hours and the most has been 23. We have 3 DDs (9, 7, 4) so we have TONS of bathroom breaks along the way. Have a safe trip!

I am from edwardsville, Illinois. That is about 20 mins from st louis. It takes us about 15 hours to get down. Here is a secret though, dont stop till you get to the other side of Atlanta. Then when you leave in the morning, you dont have to sit through all that atlanta moring traffic. It saves a lot of time. My grandparents are actually from florida, so i get all their secrets.

be careful stopping pass atlanta especially if your tired
not many rest stops some are as far as 100 miles away from each other

If you go down I65 out of Indiana and go to Nashville, go around Nashville on the West side, don't do the East side, major construction.

Otherwise in Indianapolis, go over to Cincinnati and catch 75 all the way down. I65 tends to have a lot of semi's.

I'm from Wisconsin and the only thing we hate is getting around Chicago. I don't think the constrution on 80/94 is ever going to get done. We came through the middle of March and our back-up was only 20 minutes, compared to last years 2 hour backup.

We come down now through Rockford and just avoid the whole thing. Not worth the stress.
