Questions about upgrades

I've seen a lot of people mentioning free upgrades here.
Do you ask for them at check in or on the phone before you leave? If you are upgraded to a different resort is that done at check in? How do you ask? Do you have to use the word "free" when you ask, or is that understood. And...is turndown service available free of charge at all the resorts?

I don't think you will find many upgrades that would put you at a different resort.

Just ask at the desk at check in if there are any upgrades available. If they give you a price ask nicely if there are any free upgrades available.

It doesn't happen as often as it appears on this board.

I agree that it does not happen often and no one should go into the lobby of a resort thinking that they will get an upgrade.

I have been upgraded only once in my 20+ visits to WDW and that was my first trip in 1995 and it was also one of my most expensive trips. It was a Fall Fantasy package for 10 nights at the Polynesian. We got upgraded from a garden view to a concierge garden/pool view.

I always go into the resort being happy with what I paid for. If they decide to upgrade me, then it is a bonus. I never expect it.
