Question to older time DVCer's

Has anybody heard of/ or been up graded from there reservation?..ie...reservation for a Stuido and got a 1 bedroom with check-in?
This is on points....
Anybody have this happen to them....

You can't upgrade without using more points. No free bump up.

The only reason someone would receive something other than what was reserved is if there are no rooms left due to a maintenance issue.

If you ask for an upgrade and one is available, they will charge you the points even if they don't mention it.

now if you paid cash thru CRO not MS - you might get an upgrade - but even those are never a sure thing.

Everything stated above is true. You don't get a "free ride" with points ever. Well, except for the occational accidental upgrade if something is unavailable in your catagory because of maintenance issues etc. I wouldn't expect this to happen very often and not to too many people either. In nearly 14 years of membership, it's never happened to us, and we go 2-3 times a year and have stayed in everything from a studio to a grand villa.

It happens but VERY rarely. IMO, asking for an upgrade is not reasonable and i know of at least 2 instances where someone asked and were upgraded only later to find out their points were used for the upgrade they thought they were getting for free.

1. Once cause of over booking at VWL:
Booked a studio at VWL, when we tried to check-in, we had been upgraded to a WL 2 bedroom lake view suite. Called some family members to come and join us for an unexpected vacation.
2. Once cause of problem with check-in at AKL:
Booked a standard view studio at AKL-Jambo, checked-in, given a room key as the room was suppose to be ready, went to the room, and found suitcases and purse in the room along with the room not being made up. Went back to the front desk, they gave us an on-the-spot upgrade to a savanna view room in another part of the resort plus four free breakfasts.
3. DCL
We reserved an inside stateroom but were upgraded to an ocean view room. We did not find out about the upgrade until we got to the room, what a suprise that was.

We got put into a 2 bedroom from a studio for our three night stay back in September 2002 at Hilton Head. We were told as we checked in.

The only upgrade we've ever had while being DVC members was from standard view at BWV to preferred view. I figure they must have been doing maintenance and that's what caused it.

17 years X 4 = 68 DVC/DCLs
3 upgrades during that time
3/68 = 4.4%
If that is lucky, I consider myself the luckest DVC member in the world.

hey gone more often than that - also a member since 1993 - but sometimes when 7 times (holidays) a year


and never once got an upgrade with DVC. Now the regular WDW resorts rooms yes.

I'd say that's VERY lucky!

We avg 2 to 3 trips a years since 92 and it's only happened once and that was due to a water issue... I made the mistake once early on of asking and I got what i wanted but was charged the points.... didn't do that again...lol

The best advice once one is DVC = take the word "upgrade" out of your vocabulary.
