If it's awkward approaching your mother, try to reframe it in your mind as a medical issue (which it is). If you had a monthly agonizing pain in your elbow, you wouldn't be embarrassed to seek help for it. So I'd tell you that you've been biting the bullet for a while, tried some home remedies, and are going to see a doctor about it, because based on talking to other people, your issues seem more severe than the run of the mill, and there's no point in suffering for the next 40 years if there's something you can be doing to make it better.
I do know a very devout Catholic who started taking the pill in the early 70s when she was only 13, because her periods were so painful. Obviously if you're not sexually active, you will want to weigh the pros and cons, and maybe try other approaches first, but I bet you will get peace of mind talking it over with a GYN.
