I currently teach part time at a private school and hold a Masters in math Ed.
I currently teach 2 pre-cals and AP calculus. Next year I am adding AP Stats. Today I was asked to also add an Algebra 1. I am very hesitant as I am part time an want to be available in the afternoon for my 3 kids. I am afraid 2 new preps, with one being an AP might be too much. then there is the money. I currently get $18,000 for 3 classes and I estimate $22000 for 4. If I taught in public, I would make about $43,000 and have 3 classes each semester. But I would have to deal the the politics, paperwork etc that go along with public. Would you add a 4th prep for $4000? One of the main reasons I am in private is so i can be part time. Help me sort this out. Oh, and If I don't, it will be added to an already overloaded teacher. She would have 6 classes and 4-5 preps. So I also feel guilty.

Your question isn't so much a financial one but seems to be a lifestyle one. Teaching a public school version of what you are already teaching would be one of the more sought after ones. You'd have some of the best students, and often those are in smaller classes. Politics/paperwork vary from district to district.

If you are making 18 part time, I'm assuming 43 would be teaching full time, so it's not really an apples to apples comparison. Just a few thoughts.
