Question about TSMM

I asked this over on the Theme Park board but thought that maybe someone here might know the answer.

The last trip I was at WDW I rode this twice - once in the early am with dh and later with my older dd. Both times my younger kids were not with me (sleeping in and with dh) and they did not get to ride that trip. My dd7 went back to WDW with my older dd last December and she rode it several times but ds10 has never ridden it. We have the Wii game and he loved it until it suddenly stopped working.

The little pull-knob (or whatever you call it) to fire your "gun" felt like a rubbery substance. How would I go about finding out it that thing contains latex? My ds10 is allergic to latex. I have considered just bringing plastic gloves for him to put on while riding but I don't want to make him look silly if it's not necessary but I definitely don't want to spend time at the local hospital either.

I would bring the gloves too, I believe the knob is hard plastic, and the rope maybe just nylon rope, and the way to get it back in is on the inside, but I'm not 100% SURE that it's latex free. This ride is one of my favorites, and I hope he has a good time!!

My son has an anaphylactic reaction to latex and butyl rubber. He did not have any problems on TSM. However he cannot go into Spaceship Earth without getting really wheezy. Better to be safe than sorry, I would call to make sure.

I don't know which rubber. We always thought it was what they used to scent the burning Rome scene that made him wheezy. Then found out from an imagineer that there is a rubber core inside the design of Space Ship earth.

I don't know what the ball is made out of, but DH and I will be wearing gloves. DH has a latex allergy (like... he doesn't eat bananas, avocado, celery, figs, etc because they contain traces of latex) and I'm a germaphobe

We will not feel silly- I frankly don't give a pituuuuutie what other people think of me.

I'm thinking he will be fine. We have ridden Spaceship Earth many times and ds has never had a reaction - however the smoke smell does cause a bit of an issue with his asthma. However, the change in climate and the artificial smoke they use in the attractions always causes his asthma to flare - we will be prepared with the nebulizer and inhaler.

For those that are really sensitive beware of Test Track and Lights Motors Action - the burning rubber of the cars can cause issues with some people - luckily ds has done those without a problem.

He doesn't have much problem with inhaled latex except for balloons - we sat under one at Friendly's one time and while we ate, it deflated - he had hives for a week. He seems to be more contact sensitive - foam (even those cute swords, etc at the parks), craft foams, Nerf products, those cute pens that Disney sells in the gift shops with the rubber hair, stickers, bandaids, rubber bands, a lot of Halloween costumes/accessories (i.e. masks), etc. Have to be careful about his underwear/socks as well to make sure they are discarded when the start to fray.

I'm pretty sure I remember the ball on the end of the string being plastic, not rubber, but I've only done the game using the plastic push-down button on the top of the cannon in the accessible car, so I might not be remembering it correctly. (Not that I would remember it correctly even if I HAD used the ball-and-string, LOL!!)

I go in the accessible car because of my service dog (the only car we're allowed to use on that ride - but we go in the front part, not the wheelchair part), but use the push-down button with the butt of my palm/wrist area because I have wrist pain issues that can crop up, and I'm sure the constant pulling of the string would make those issues active (if they aren't already active).

I have wrist wraps that I can wear, but am weary to wear them ever since I had a chemical burn-type reaction while wearing one of them (not sure if it was a reaction to the neoprene [never had an issue before] or a reaction to the salve that I had on for a very short time and washed off or a reaction to no air getting to it for a couple days [the pain was instantly-bring-tears-to-your-eyes type of pain with the slightest movement, so taking the wrap off wasn't really an option]). Life is fun!

OP, I asked my latex-allergic friend, and she said she didn't remember a problem with the knob, but she does recall being concerned about the handle that you hold/aim with. That is definitely a soft rubber of some sort.

Also asked about SE, and she said she may have had some difficulty in there, but related it to the Rome burning scene. I have a feeling she'll skip that one on our next trip, but it's not one of her favorites anyways.

We have done TT without a problem, but had never done LMA. Kept getting prevented from doing it on the last trip, and given how reactionary she was by the end of that trip, we are very thankful and will probably skip it.

BTW SD, my life since July has been working with my friend's (brand new) food allergies due to this latex business. The list of cross-reactive foods we've compiled is so long... it is maddening. If your DH doesn't avoid them already, kiwi, chestnuts and, increasingly, tomatoes are also very prevalent. My understanding is it's not that there is latex in these foods, but rather the proteins making up the foods is very similar to one of the proteins that make up latex, and that's why it causes reactions. Everyone's list is different, in terms of what they react to, which makes it quite challenging!
