Question about special requests at dinners?

With regards to a curry on a couple of cruises are serving team were all from India and one said he had worked in a London we got taking I said I liked curry and it went on from there. With regards to Palo soufflé my children had it three or four times, but I think they gave now stopped it. There was no extra charge. It started off with a discussion again re Palo and how was the meal did you have the soufflé and the children missed out and developed from there and we then requested it on the following cruises.

My wife and I had a similar experience our first trio on the Fantasy - Our server team were all from Indonesia. My wife did a school exchange program to Indonesia when she was in High School. We got talking about the food and we ended up with a large plate of lumpia one night and nasi goreng (fried rice)another. No request on our part it just showed up as a surprise! (We are very low demand sort of folks. Concierge team just set our Remy night and we did not need them again. Easy cabin for them.)

BUT we were also able to afford Concierge level cabins that cruise. We still think that had a lot to do with it. We have never had that level of attentiveness on any of seven other cruises. We have always assumed our being Concierge allowed the server team to do that sort of thing. There could be utter chaos, and much disappointment, if everyone started requesting such things.

We will always fondly remember that server team. That was one of the highlights of that cruise.

...Also we both adore the chocolate soufflé from Palo and had no idea we could order that in the MDR's!
Is there a charge for it as it is from Palo and we will be in the MDR's?
Has anyone else had success in ordering specialty foods not on the menu or food from Palo as a regular passenger before? And if so is there an upcharge for food from Palo whilst dining in the MDR's?

We sure would have ordered the Palo soufflé if we had known!
No you can't -- really. You can't. It's happened from time to time but I think that free stateroom upgrades are a lot more common than getting a Palo Souffle in any MDR.

We had a great server on our Wonder trip to Hawaii. I didn't like a lot of the things on the MDR menu and the head server noticed that. He was an Indian gentleman and asked if I would like Indian food. Absolutely!! I love Indian food. So for the next 10 nights or so, I had the best Indian food I had ever eaten. It was freshly made, and he brought out enough to share with my family and our table mates.

Oh, well thats a disappointment DF.
Why did you mention the soufflé at all if you think they have stopped it now? :(
Talk about get my hopes up! lol!

I will have to speak to the serving team first and head waiter about if they will be able to coordinate a curry for us next time we cruise.

And thanks jrabbit for the info even though it is disappointing :(

In July and August 2014 we cruised and I did not care for any other apps at one of the locations. Our server got me the lobster ravoli from another location. They also gave me a side of scallops each night, even when not on the menu. Our July servers were so amazing that we requested them for the August trip.

I thought I'd read recently that they'd stopped offering the special curries on request.

Best to go in with no expectations I guess then.
Whats the point of offering advice mentioning a service that you had and isn't offered anymore? :sad2:

The special curries were never a definite thing, otherwise they wouldn't have been special. Some cruisers would mention to their servers that they liked Indian food, and the servers would try to make it happen. I hadn't read that this was no longer happening at all, but the problem is when someone posts here that they received this special attention and then lots of people start demanding the same of their servers. It eventually becomes too heavy a burden to sustain.

That's why I haven't posted about some of the most special pixie dust moments we have received on DCL. I don't want to cause grief for the CMs who would be on the receiving end of "well I read it on the DIS board."
AMEN!!!!

Expectation Inflation - happens here all of the time. Like I've said before ... the Extra Special, Out of the Ordinary, Pixie Dust, Magical Moments become the ordinary, scavenger hunt / check it off the list and on to the next "special" moment. The best of the best is the minimum for me because ... well ... I AM Me after all.

Amen! And yes, the crew members DO hear it. (As do cast members in the parks.)

Last cruise we got special food and we were NOT concierge. And our servers were definitely NOT from India. All they had to do was talk to the Indian chefs and ask them to make more of what they were making for themselves...

You can't get it the first night. You can ask for it the first night for subsequent nights, though.

I thought I'd read recently that they'd stopped offering the special curries on request.

Where did you read it?

I mentioned it as it has occurred but I think it was then mentioned here too much at they stopped it as they had too many requests, this is why I haven't posted all my concierge experiences as when it's all posted here then it's expected and then they stop it.

The Palo souffle thing, though, it probably because you have to pay extra for Palo food, so it's crazy that they EVER allowed it in the MDR. That's my opinion.

It came about from a discussion my server also worked or had work in Palo, we discussed how are meal was the night before in Palo, did you have the Palo Soufflé and it progressed from that, others reported it here, I confirmed I had it as well, two or three cruises later after having it each cruise I saw it stopped by then our kids were no longer interested, my teenage daughter will no eat a single dessert on the cruise now.

It's such a shame when one person can ruin it all for everyone just sharing their concierge perks.
:(

Lol relax everyone. The palo souffle was nothing out of this world anyways.
