Me again.

This question is about transferring points between accounts. We are considering getting 2 contracts - 1 BWV (150) and 1 VWL (200) - for a total of 350 points. This is a little more than we'd need for the next few years so we may rent some of the points.

My question relates to the limit on transfers into/out of your DVC account.

Assume we want to make a ressie 11 mos in advance for a BWV standard view 2 br in the summer, which would require 315 points. Assuming that thru banking/borrowing I can put together 300 of my own BWV points. Can I make use of my VWL contract to make up the difference by transferring 15 points from my VWL account to my BWV account? Will this not allow me to make a ressie until 7 mos since 15 of the 315 points are not BWV?

Now assume that we want to rent some of the VWL points we won't be using that year since we are going to the BWV. Say I arrange with another member to transfer 100 points to their account. Can I do this or did I blow my one transfer for the year when I transferred 15 points from my VWL account to my BWV account to cover the ressie I made?

I see how this stuff can get a little confusing. Does this make sense - is this how transfers even work? Thanks again for your help.

We are allowed one transfer per year- either into or out of any contract. If you transfer any points between your contracts- that would be the one transfer for both of those accounts for the year.

Good Luck!

Any VWL points transfered to your BWV contract can be used at BWV only at 7 months out. Note you could use those 300 BWV points to reserve as much of the trip as possible at 11 months out and thus just need to reerve a last day or so at 7 months with VWL points.

As noted you are allowed only one transfer per use year per account and that is one transfer in or one transfer out meaning a transfer from one account to another uses up the one transfer limit for both.

However, that will not necessarily keep you from renting. Most rent by the member's making a reservation for another using the member's points. When you do that there is no "transfer" of points subject to the one transfer rule as "transfer" applies only to the physical act of actually transfering points from one account to another account.

I'm confused why would you want to transfer between account? If I have two contracts dont I tell them say I want to book Sun - Thurs using x# of points from VWL contract and Fri - Sat using x# of points From BWV contract?

That would be a common way of doing it but sometimes a transfer may be preferred. Though I do not know what the original author is thinking,. suppose in the situation described you wanted to rent all remaining VWL points by making a reservation using VWL points and putting the reservations in the other's name using the 11 month window. You want to assure that you have a total number of VWL points to rent that equals the points required for all nights of a rental and leave none left over. Thus, if 135 VWL points would give say 5 nights, you want to assure there are 135 in the VWL contract after reserving BWV and thus use the transfer method for the BWV reservation.

Also, you could have use year issues. Suppose your BWV points have a February use year and the VWL have December and you plan a BWV trip in January 2002 and then a VWL trip in March 2003. For that Jan 2002 trip you could use 2001 BWV points but even with banking you could not use any of those 2001 BWV points for that March 2003 trip. Thus, for that 2002 trip you arrange it so you use all the BWV points and transfer to the BWV account only enough VWL points to equal the total needed for the 2002 trip, leaving you with nothing but VWL points from December 2001 use year that can be banked and used for the March 2003 trip.

It seems as though it would be preferrable to have one ressie, especially if you can make it 11 months in advance. If you transferred points to one account it would allow you to reserve the entire week in 1 reservation. Unfortunately, by transferring VWL points to the BWV account and not having enough BWV points for the entire week you would lose the 11 month priority (this is what I had been unsure of). This would force you to wait until 7 months and make one ressie, or make a six day ressie using the BWV account at 11 months and wait until 7 months to make the ressie for the last day, which wouldn't require any transfer of points.

Thanks for the replies :).

Also, if you want to reserve a week and your concern is that after reserving 6 days of the week with the 11 month window you may not be able to get that last day at 7 months out, then consider simply leaving that last day to be reserved as a Friday or Saturday night. Those weekend days with higher point requirements are almost always available at 7 months out regardless of time of year.
