We are going in late July. We are planning on going back to the room and pool after lunch and then returning around 5 or 6 to help beat the heat (for DD 6yo) We will miss the afternoon parade but will see the night parade. What's the difference in them? And should we stay to see the afternoon parade at MK?

I'm not sure what, if any, difference there is, but in July, the afternoon heat will be brutal. I like the night parade better because of the aforementioned heat & the lights at night are beautiful/awesome!

Personally, I wouldn't want to miss any of Disney's Parades. I think the Parades and Shows is what makes Disney so special, along with the rides. I love both Spectro Magic and the Disney Dreams Parade at MK. My daughter loved the afternoon parade so much, we say it twice while we were there. As for the hot sun, I agree it can get hot. I think the best place to see the parades (both) is near Frontierland. You'll have a better chance of getting a spot near there, also there is some shade. Another suggestion is to wait near where the path are. They don't allow people to stand there to wait for the parade, however, they close the ropes when it starts. This will give you an opportunity to maybe wait in the shade and have a spot to see the parade.
