1600x1200 is that 1.9 megapixel or 2.2 megapixel? I thought it was 2 megapixel, but that isn't an option.

I'm not sure I understand your question... 1600 times 1200 is 1.9 pixels... but if your trying to decipher the specs on a camera, you have to remember that marketers and reality don't fit neatly together.... I'm sure if a marketer had a camera with 1.9 megapixels he would round up to 2 megapixels... also it is possible that a sensor has 2.2 megapixels but only produces pictures that are 1600 by 1200... some pixels on a sensor aren't even used... and unless your using a Foven chip camera.. the pixels on the chip don't match up with the pixels in the jpg simply because most sensors use a bayer or other system of generating a single pixel from a group of actual pixels.

Thank you. I am taking a photography class and this was asked one of my assignments.
The exact question was :

What is the resolution value of a 1600x1200 digital picture?
a. 1.9 megapixel
b. 2.2 megapixel
c. 3.1 megapixel

So I guess the answer should be 1.9 megapixel. All my noted from class has the answer being 2 megapixel, but that isn't an option.

I would say a. Final answer.

1600 x 1200 = 1920000 bytes.

"Megabytes" can be either:
10^6 (1,000,000) bytes
2^20 (1,048,576) bytes
1000×1024 (1,024,000) bytes

I'd suggest using 10^6 bytes since that is the definition used for storage devices, such as disk and flash.

1. Notice that if you used the binary meaning of megapixel, the result (1920000/1048576 = 1.83 MP) is further away from (b) (2.2 MP) and (a) is still the best choice.
2. Important words from higher up in this thread: "isn't an option". But you need the entire thread's content to understand why.

I think it's generally rounded up. Both the 2mp digital cameras I've owned (Fuji 2800Zoom and Minolta X20, which is now my 3-year-old's camera) produce 1600x1200 photos.

Kind of like the way, for years, Ford put a "5.0" badge on their Mustangs which actually had 4.9l engines. :)
