Friends our ours want to do a long weekend trip to Vegas in July.
I have been looking at places to stay. Friends have enough Holiday Inn points to get 2 comped rooms at the HI Express. It is 2 blocks off the strip on the southern end. DH says he might never go back to Vegas..isn't big on Gambling, would rather go to Lake Tahoe.
He says if he goes he wants to stay on the strip. I found rooms at Treasure Island for an avg of $104 a night ( 4 nights, Thursday- sunday).
That seems to be a good rate for the quailty and on-strip location.
Any input as to TI and that price? Is it good?
Also, is it fair of us to offer to pay for our friends room,
at TI, since they could have stayed for free at HIExpress????
Thanks for any input and helpful info...first trip for all of us involved.

2 blocks off the strip really isn't a big deal. You have to walk to everything anyway. And FREE sounds much better than $104.00 a night.

I didn't stay at TI but was in the casino, big hotel with lots going on.

TI is supposed to be pretty good, especially since they just renovated. Staying off strip is a bigger deal in July than say February because of the heat. While you do usually walk a lot in Vegas you can get in and out of the air conditioning pretty easy. If you stay off-strip you will have the initial hike to get to the strip everytime you want to go down there. I refuse to stay off-strip because it just fells less like Vegas. I fI went 4-5 times a year that may be different but since we go maybe every other year I like to stay on-strip.

Your friends could still stay at HI if they wanted and stay for free. Or if you feel you need to you could split the cost of their room. They are adults and can shoose to stay for free even if you want to stay on-strip but I can understand that you want to stay together as well.

Either way you should have a great time, just drink lots of water because Vegas in July can be brutal. Or only go out at night;)

I would definitly go with the rooms at TI. That is a good rate, and some of the off strip motels can be a bit scary.

:D I plan to drink lots of water... I go visit my parents in New Mexico in July and I feel like I turn into a prune ;)
We would like to save money too, but DH (and me to a point) thinks it will be worth the $ to in the "middle "of the action. Especially if we don't plan on going back.
We have casinos just 1 hour away, so it's not the gambling we are going for..more the glitz and shows.

As fat as shows go I highly reccomed Cirques Mytere. It's my most favorite of all their productions that I have seen. It's right at the TI too!

Click on this link if you want to be frugal. It has listings and ratings of a lot of the hotels both on and off of the strip.

I'm going in April and staying at the Flamingo. I hope to get a room that faces the Bellagio fountain. Have a great trip.

Did you see the specials that TI is running on there website of upgraded rooms and free breakfasts? I was looking into that, and the rooms seem very nice- I was looking into the month of May but I'm sure they still had it for July.
If your husband wants to stay on the strip, then I would do so. It will make his trip more pleasant especially if he doesn't want to stay there.
Since the hotel that your friends are able to get is close to the strip, I say that you do things together and when it comes time to going back to your hotels, then just split up and meet for the following day. Express to them that your husband would like to stay on the strip and if they would like to get a room there also, then you would enjoy their company, but if not, then you can just meet up with them everyday for breakfast or to do the things you have planned.

If it were me, I would stay on the strip. No doubt about it. When I lived in L.A., I used to go to Vegas almost every month. One time I stayed at a hotel off the strip & I hated being that far from all the casinos. There is lots of walking to do there, so I would rather save my feet for doing "strip" walking, versus "getting to the strip" walking...

Driving on the strip is a nightmare. Especially if you're there over a weekend. It's much, much faster to walk to your next destination. You don't have to be a gambler to enjoy Vegas. It's fun just to check out the different casinos (hotels). Bellagio is sooooo beautiful, NY NY is so much like NY, etc....

I probably wouldn't offer to pay our friends room. I would just let them know that you'd prefer to stay on the strip since you don't know when or if you'll ever be back.

Oh....I love Treasure Island. We went with our DS (then 5 y/o) & we had a room overlooking the Pirate Ship show in front of the hotel. It was amazing seeing it from our room. Have fun! Wish I was coming with you!! ;)

Thanks for all the help everyone... and for that link Adam:D
I figure DH will like TI, after all he still wants to watch POC all the time:rolleyes:

I would also stay at TI. When I go to Vegas again I will stay on the strip as I feel it adds to the atmosphere of the place. I have not stayed at TI but stayed at the Venetian (opposite TI) where we got an upgrade to a high roller suite :teeth: so we could see TI from our room (and Bellagios fountains). We also went in July and the heat was over 100 degrees every day but not unbarable. Saying that you would not want to walk far so a room on the strip would be better.

We are also staying at the Flamingo when we go in July for 5 nights. I would also only stay on the strip.

No matter where you stay on the strip.....you don't have to walk if you don't want to. The Las Vegas Monorail is starting up shortly...........here is the link below.............

I went to Vegas last July when hubby had a work conference. We got several travel books and honestly, the way places off the strip were described, I would be afraid to stay off the strip. One of hubby's meetings was off strip and he said he felt nervous there also. We were at Caesars. It was cool and I have no idea how much it cost--co. paid the room. The strip is cool. Vegas feels like another planet. Didn't make it to TI, but talked to several people staying there who really liked it. Nice shopping too--Forum Shops at Caesars, Venietian with the canal, and Paris, Paris were my choices. Also some very nice art collections if you like this.

It will be brutally hot! We had rain and humidity for 3 of our 5 days. All in all, glad I went; no desire to go back--rather do Disney! And I only went to Vegas because I was promised a side trip to Disneyland.:teeth:

I've stayed at TI 3 times and loved it! It's easy to get from the front entrance to the elevators, some hotels have quite a hike. Twice I requested pirate battle view and got it, another time I requested Mirage volcano view and got it (near the top, great view all the way down the strip).

I live in So. Cal. and have been to Vegas more times then I actually can count. We have stayed in both regular rooms and suites at TI, and your price is a great one!

There are dozens of free things to do in Vegas that you don't need any money for...Bellagio garden, walk around the canals in the Venetian, tour the malls in Alladin and Ceasars Palace. Watch the Bellagio fountain, the volcano at Mirage, the Priate Battle at TI.

My fave show so far has been Blue Man Group at the Luxor.

Vegas.com is a great resource for info on Vegas. There are maps of the strip, shoing where all the hotels are and where the monorails are.

Hope this helps!

I've only been once to Vegas but would highly recommend staying in the middle of the action......that's what Vegas is all about, IMO!!:smooth:

Vegas in July is killer, stay on the strip !

BTW we will be staying at TI in two weeks :D

we will be able to ride the new monorail, and see the new Borg 4D show !

Judy I'll be there March 25th and you know what!! The monorail has been pushed back to April because of difficulties.
I really wanted to ride it while there.

Drat ! Oh well, at least it will be great weather :D
we will be there 3/19-3/22
