Question about FastPass

Okay, so this is my first real post - I tend to be a little cyber-shy, but have a question that has been driving me crazy.

With the FastPass kiosk, I imagine it like the ATM - people taking forever to figure out what they want, how to get it, to dig their passes out, etc. However, I never hear anyone mention a line to get the FastPass. Are there just so many of them around that its not an issue? Or do the technologically insecure tend to steer clear?

Each attraction has between 3 - 6 fastpass machine. Sometimes there is a line, but they're short lines, like 2 or 3 people. That's it. It takes about 1 second to put your pass in, 3 seconds to spit the fastpass out, and 2 seconds to collect your pass and fastpass. Then you're out of there!

From what I've noticed, the only time the fast pass lines move a little slowly, its because one person was handed a bunch of park passes to get fastpasses for everyone in their party. I was behind quite a few of these people, and it takes a few minutes for them to figure out which tickets they already put in, etc, but since all you do is put your ticket in and a fastpass pops out, its really a great process overall. Some of my favorite moments of our last trip were when we would enter the fast pass line and people on the fast pass line would act so puzzled...how come those people get to cut us? Some people need to pay attention to their environment, although then again, its probably better that they dont.

It's not really like that. It's a very easy process-not a lot of decision making. I've rarely encountered a line.

Ooooooh! I thought it had a touch pad or buttons or something where you picked what you wanted. But each machine is dedicated to one attraction.

We just returned and on a few attractions there were long fast pass lines. For example the tower or terror line had to be 30 to 40 people deep on each machine. This was first thing in the morning on an early entry morning in the pouring rain!

The line was still quicker than the stand by lines! The only problem with the machines is putting the ticket into the slot and grabbing the one coming out. If you have another ticket in your hand the fast pass might hit the ground. There is a plastic shield over it like in a gum ball machine but tickets do fall out once in a while.

On really good attrations we put one person in the fast pass line and another in the stand by line as long as it was under 30 minutes and that way got to ride twice.

We found that by early afternoon the fast passes were gone for the day.

We also were told by CMs that we could not use a fast pass before the set time but could use it after the set time. I guess they understand that rides do break down and times get messed up. We got caught in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and had to almost run to get to a ride and that is when they told us that we could use expired fast passes.

How did both get to ride twice? It sounds like the one person rode using FP and the other rode using the standby line. The only way I see this working is if the FP person joined the stand by person after using the FP line.

That is what they are saying One held a place in line while the other got both fast passes to be used later.
Personally I believe holding places in line for someone that was never in the line is cutting in line and should not be allowed. too many times I have been near the front of a line, finally, and suddenly ten people run up and join the person ahead of me. That is just not right.

We took turns standing in lines. On one ride one of us would get in the fast pass line and the other would get in the standby line. The fastpass line as always much shorter and then that person would join the other in the standby line. This also gave opportunities to use a busy restroom or grab a drink. No one minded at all and infact serveral times we would hold a place for strangers when a parent and young child needed to use a restroom.

Most of the time lines were a minimum of 40 minutes long and it gave everyone time to get to know one another and talk about where they were from, where they were staying or what attractions were their favorites. There were several times when we joined up and formed a group to ride something together because we had bonded in lines. This happened on Tower or Terror and we had a car full of strangers that had suddenly become best buds. It was one of the special Disney moments you get if you open your heart and mind to those around you.

No one ever considered it as cutting and if having someone leave the line and come back a few minutes later really bothers you then perhaps Disney is not the place for you!

Another thing we did a few times is swapped fast passes. For example if we had Thunder Mountain passes and we wanted Space Mountain passes we would talk to those around us and a couple of times we just swapped passes and saved ourselves a lot of walking.

I did not say having someone leave the line and come back really bothered me. I said that having one person wait in line for several people who have never even been in the line but are waiting somewhere or riding another ride and then run up at the last min as the waiting person approaches the front of the line is wrong.
I know there are also people that must sit to wait and will join the line, because of disabilities, that is also not what I was talking about.

I guess I have a double standard on this. People with kids under the teen age who do this don't bother me at all, and same goes for older people. It is younger able bodied adults that bother me. But there are always hidden disabilities and bathroom needs so I try to give people the benifit of the doubt. We have three kids and it happens very often that we join someone in line, but it seems like there is a point in everyline where to join after that is rude no matter what. Anywhere near the front is rude, or if there is a preshow area, we consider it the cut off, before is okay but once the line is in the preshow area it is too late.
