I just got a Facebook account last night, sort of out of curiousity. So, within an hour after establishing my account, I was invited to be add a friend. This is a woman who is the mother of one of my son's friends. I've only talked to her a few times in real life. The friend thing is not a problem. What I am wondering is how this all works? How did she know I joined. Obviously Facebook alerted her in some way, some how and new there was a connection. It also suggested that I be friends with some people. Now, some of the people I know and others I haven't a CLUE!

So, how does it do this and will I get alerts that someone I *know* in real life has joined?:confused3

Friend suggestions are from the lists of your Facebook friends. For example, when I joined, it suggested my cousin and her dd because they were on my dd's friends list. Of course, since you don't know everyone your friends know, some will show up and you'll have no clue who that person is.

Do the two of you have a mutual acquaintance who may be your Facebook friend and may be hers as well.

Good heavens, how many times can I type the word "friend" in one post? :rotfl:

I believe I also get suggestions when someone on my email contact list joins Facebook.

My son has a Facebook account on my computer and I think that must be the common thread. So did I just "pop up" on her screen when I joined?

I didn't let Facebook scan my e-mails. I don't know why, I just said no.

Did you put your location? That can link you to other people. You will see as you go into your account if you look on the right in the Ads there will be friend suggestions for you. You probably popped up there based on your mutual friends or location and she added you.
