We have a 7:50pm flight out of MCO to Newark NJ on Monday. With the hurricane and the closing of all NYC area airports today, what does this mean for us? If the airports are closed Monday...then i realize we are not going home and will have to get in touch with the airlines about booking a new flight. BUT...what if Newark re opens by Monday morning? If our flight goes will we be able to fly home with no problems? Do they ever bump those with ticketd for those that had their flights cancelled?

If you have a ticket for a flight on Monday you will have priority over those that were bumped. You should keep checking flights for Monday because usually when an airport closes the early flights on the day it reopens are cancelled.

Keep monitoring your airline website for any changes.

thank you!!!! We are not scheduled to leave until Monday evening so hopefully the airports will be open by then!!

As stated, you will not be bumped off your flight to accommodate passengers whose flights were canceled. It is possible that your flight will depart as scheduled; just depends on the condition of the airport, if flight crews can get to the airport, if your plane is there, etc. Make a contingency plan, because if your flight ends up being canceled, you will be at the end of the line to rebook, behind everyone whose flights were canceled this weekend. In the worst case, you could be delayed for days.

ugh..thanks...didn't think of that!! I did already ask the hotel we are at if we could stay an extra night or so

Be at the airport early. Unexpected crowds at the airports can lead to delays that cause you to lose your reservation (falls into the category of missed flights). There will be oodles of people trying to rebook or flying standby so ticket counters can be swamped.

Going home from Disney you can request an even eralier (more than 3 hours in advance) Magical Express bus at or before morning before checkout day. THis request is always granted and the new schedules bus becomes your one an only assigned bus.

If you end up with a lot of time on your hands after going into security then that's an excellent time for a meal, hence the idea of not doing a meal as your last Disney activity.

Often the last planes are flown out before the emergency so there are no planes when the airport re-opens until the next batch of planes arrives which is usually after the first flight times come and are cancelled and go.

Be certain that your flight is in fact scheduled before you leave for hthe airport. If it is cancelled, you are only adding to the people jam at the airport.

You might want to get a hotel ressie for Monday night if it has a reasonable cancellation policy. Be sure to cancel it if not needed.

I already asked the front desk here (quaility Suites) if our flight got cancelled could we stay an extra night or two. They said yes, and they will leave us in the room we are in now.

Hope all goes well for you. I was just wondering which hotel you are staying at and if you are happy with it. Looking for a future trip. Thanks.

we are staying at the quailty suites in lake buena vista. i do like the hotel, it is clean, free breakfast and close to everything

We just rode out Irene here in southeast PA and the power is back up. Not fun. Forecast is calling for sun by late day.

If I had to bet, I'd say that by tomorrow you have a reasonable shot of getting your flight into NJ. As long as the airport isn't under water. If it were today, I'd say go ahead and extend your hotel booking.

Since we are in the same area and get the NY/NJ coverage, they were saying that the airports will start to get back to operation as soon as the runways are inspected and any flooding is gone. The planes will be brought back in as soon as possible. I would keep in touch with the airline but by the sound of it you should be able to get home.

PLEASE arrive at MCO early! It's a poorly run airport when things are going well.....

The Orlando paper reported 160 flights cancelled. For conservative purposes lets go with 150 passengers per flight or around 24,000 passengers!!!!!! Half of whom will be wandering around MCO LOL!

Seriously, if you get delayed a baggage check, security etc and don't get to the gate at your airlines cut off.... Seats gone to some of those 24,000 and YOU are then END of the 24K list to get home. And whining about "I was here on time but security had a long line" won't help!

This is not a time to try to get "one last ride on test track!"

The truth is the planes are sitting in places like Orlando ready to go to NYC and the area. The airlines moved them OUT of the airports with the storm and positioned them to be ready to hit thier routes, but.... it's going to take several days to clear the backlog!

(My cousin and her family had to drive home today because the movers arrive tomorrow and they couldn't get that rescheduled!)

I know my boss (who flew into Minnesota or Wisconsin, I can't recall) was supposed to fly home to Newark today was not able to get a flight home until Wednesday. Three more workdays without my boss!

I arrived this morning to work in a weirdly empty airport...with LOTS of RED canceled flights on the flight board. On my way out to my work location, I took notice of a lot of planes parked...at least 6-7 Airtran planes, and the same for Delta...not sure about other airlines...I know a lot of them started heading back out today..as some airports are re-opening. Call ahead...and I agree with others, get to MCO VERY EARLY..better to be bored in the airport for a few extra hours, then miss a flight, and be stranded here longer than needed

There is an update on the NYPost site about the commute tomorrow and it mentioned that the airports won't be opened until late tomorrow or Tuesday. Make sure to keep checking with your airline since this last bit of info didn't sound that good.

The NYPost which often gets things wrong has gotten this info wrong as well, JFK and Newark will reopen to arriving flights at 6 am and departing flights at noon on Monday, Laguardia opens to both arriving and departing flights at 7 am.

I know that LAG will be opening monday morning for depatures and arruvals. I cant be sure how they will have departures ready to go. On saturday I was on one of the last flights out at noon before teh airport closed for arrivals. There wer almost no planes there, so I dont know where the departing planes will come from.

On the positive side, flying on the last flight out of LGA befiore the storm certaintly cut down on crowds, security wait time and ground delays.

MCO was a nightmare this morning...though a lot of flights are still showing as canceled up on the board...Security was busy though on 60-129 gates.

Wow...we didn't encounter that at all in the afternoon. We were supposed to fly out Sunday at 7:20 PM. On Thursday I called Jetblue and asked to be switched to another flight due to Irene. Since there were 6 of us traveling, I wanted to be sure we all got on the same flight. They said it was almost 100% that flight would be cancelled, so they would switch me at no charge and that I was very smart in doing this so early in the game. We got on a flight for Monday at 4:40 pm. Although she couldn't give us assigned seats, we were still booked on that flight - we would have to get them assigned at the airport check in line. I did monitor the flight everyday since Thursday incase they decided to cancel again. When I called on Sunday morning , I was told the first 4 flights of the day had been cancelled, but ours was still on. We arrived to MCO at 1:30 and only had to wait in line for about 15 minutes for check in, it then took about another 15 minutes to get us checked in and seats, so by 2:00 we headed to security. Since they we were not boarding till 4:10, we headed to the Disney Store for some last minute souvies. Spent some time there and headed for security around 2:45. It took us literally 10 minutes for all 6 of us to go through - it was awesome! By 3:00 we were all sitting down eating a late lunch. I have never been through security that fast ever. They were very organized, professional and efficient.
