We'll be driving down in june with our 2 boys ages 2 and 8. I booked a room at Howard Johnson Express in the Savannah/Richmond Hill area. Has anyone stayed at this hotel? We aren't looking for frills just a clean, safe place to sleep. Also, we plan on leaving our home (brick, nj) around 4a.m on a Sunday morning...do you think we'll even make it to Georgia by about dinner time? I want to be able to have time to have dinner and settle everyone down before bed. Thanks for any help you can give. Barbara

We drove from Cinnaminson, NJ (near Moorestown/Mount Laurel) in December of 2002.

We left home around 6:30 am and arrived in Savannah around 8 pm that night. Most of our delays were caused by snow, and by the general traffic mess surrounding Washington, DC.

I don't know about the Howard Johnsons, but I can highly recommend the Clarion Suites off of exit 94 in Savannah. A room for one night cost us only $70 or so, and it was spotless. It's a newer hotel, with an indoor pool and indoor corridors leading to the rooms. Each room had two queen beds, and all guests were invited to a continental breakfast each morning.

we drove from masssachusetts in december and our second night we stopped in savannah georgia and stayed in a comfort inn. i would never stay there again we didnt feel safe and the staff were not friendly the room had no towels, and when we called for some they said we could come and get some if we wanted them.

on another note our first night we stayed in a howard johnsons in manassas virginia off of 95. and it was great. clean safe and friendly.

on the way back we stopped in south carolina in Rocky mount and stayed in a marriot it was clean and only 79.00

good luck driving.

We live in S. Centrl Pa. just above the Md/Pa. line. We leave on a Friday (at 4:00 AM also) and just barely get thru the DC traffic mess before it becomes impossible (6:00 AM and after).
We always take the 295 by-pass around Richmond and stop for a full breakfast and a # of gas/rest stops along the way. We arrive in Brunswick Ga (farther south then Savannah)around 5:00 in the afternoon at the very latest.
With you leaving on a Sunday, the DC "rush" hour won't be a problem. But expect heavy traffic anyway--it's ALWAYS a mess down there.
Can't help with that hotel, but time-wise you shold be just fine getting to Savannah by a reasonable dinner hour.

I have a suggestion if you need a place a little before Savannah/Richmond Hill. We stayed at the Howard Johnson's off 95 in Orangeburg S.C. It was very nice, but inexpessive. I was very impressed, very clean, large room and had a free breakfast. We have also stayed at the Comfort Inn in Orangeburg, which was nice as well.

Watch out for the Holiday Inn there, they were charging $80-90.00/night. We paid $49.00 at HJ's.:sunny:
