Culvers yum. Butter burgers. We had a doughnut shop called Dixie Cream and I loved them but they are no more so I really don't do doughnuts anymore they had both great yeast and cake. I do sometimes eat "Amish crack" which are these cinnamon powered sugared holes that are amazing , place is local that is franchising now. Rise and Roll bakery

Question of the day: 4/30: Donuts? What's your choice?

Do you like donuts? Yeast or cake? Glazed? With sprinkles? Our favorite mom and pop donut and bakery opens back up tomorrow. It's cash only business and no tables inside and always long line out the door to pick them up. They have best plain glazed donuts and one the best danish I've ever tasted. What's your favorite?

You would have to post this question. I have been craving a donut....a decent donut...for the last month. By decent, I mean I would even settle for Krispy Kreme. . I've tried going to both Dunkin' Donuts by my house, but I wasn't willing to wait in those lines. They are both drive thru only for now (they closed the lobbies totally)...and I have yet to see less than 15 cars in the lines. I love donuts, not enough to wait in that kind of a line. The premade ones in the stores (like Hostess) aren't even close to what a good donut is (although they do for road and camping trips)...except for those raspberry filled, powdered sugar coated Hostess donuts. I haven't seen them in years, but man, those were good.

I like most donuts, except maple ones. But I really love a French crueller. /drool Second up would be a good chocolate or a blueberry cake donut.

I did buy the stuff to make homemade yeast donuts, using my mom's recipe (a Betty Crocker one). I just have been occupied with ice cream and cakes. LOL

We had Tijuana Flats delivered tonight for dinner (Throwback Thursdaze burrito deals). I had a bowl...rice, black beans, blackened chicken, sour cream, cheese, tomato, and onion. Added salsa at home. Chips & Queso. DH had a burrito (mega style, which is 2x meat + cheese): blackened chicken, black beans, rice, sour cream and a chipotle spicy sauce. DS had his usual ground beef, cheese and lettuce taco, and a cheese quesadilla.

YES! A MILLION TIMES yes TO DONUTS. Just one and I’m good for several weeks. Chocolate cake donut with frosting and chopped peanuts.

Let’s see... the three gratitude things for today:
1. Biopsy results came back that I’ve been waiting on for over a week. BENIGN.🎉
2. Thankful for the best DH
3. Thankful we are both healthy and we have a safe place to walk

Ah, sinkers as DH calls them!

I like them but they don't really like me! I can usually tolerate one, though. We don't have any Krispy Kreme's by us, so if we go by one I might risk it for one of those warm honey dips. :bitelip: Sometimes DH brings his father donuts from a good place by us, and if I am working on the weekend and people are home I might stop and get some. It reminds me of when my mother used to bring them home after church on Sundays from a little donut place down the street from our house. Something about it is comforting.

Favorites are a chocolate covered cake donut or jelly filled yeast.

Both my mother and FIL love/d a plain donut best! I think it stems from back in their day when that's probably mostly what they had. When my mother was sick I often brought her home one plain donut to have with her coffee and she was in seventh heaven.

I dont love donuts. I worked in a bakery when I was younger and the constant access to samples somehow killed my loving them. Now I will still eat them if we end up in the same place and there isnt something else I want more but I dont go out of my way to get them.

::yes::Same...I don't like donuts. My first real job was in a donut shop and I went home everyday smelling like donuts and coffee.:crazy2: If we get them or they are around, I'll have half a chocolate glazed bar or just plain glaze donut holes.

BTW when I was just starting college I worked in a bakery and one of jobs was filling the donuts with jelly or lemon and sugaring them, etc. I would work next to the person who was deep frying them. Good memories! I would need a shower after work, though! Lots of grease in the air! :P

I'm late to the party on yesterday's question. Too much yardwork on Wed, and I could barely move yesterday, lol. Not to mention that it poured most of the day. We had flood warnings out till last nite.
I am not a big donut lover, but I do like a nice fresh jelly one, or a lemon one, or a boston creme one. But my favorite one no longer exists (at least in it's original form). When I moved from MA to MD, the local Giant store, Martins, had what they called peanut butter donuts. I had never heard of them. Nice fluffy donut, filled with this delicious peanut butter cream, topped with a chocolate ganache like topping. Mmmmm! This year, they stopped making the donut base in the stores, and got it premade. It no longer tastes anything like it did. The donut itself isn't fluffy anymore, but more cake like- yuck :( There are really only 2 bakeries in town, both Mom and Pop ones, but both of them have been closed since all of this started. But neither are a place I would go to just for a donut.
Have never had a Krispy Kreme donut, have never even seen a Krispy Kreme store, lol

I am grateful this morning that they are calling for sunny skies for the weekend, temps in the mid 50's today, and 70's for the next 2 days
I am grateful that I am less stiff and sore--getting old sucks!
Grateful that I still don't know anyone who has the virus, and that the numbers are starting to come down in our community. Still no mention of when things will start reopening yet though.

Question of the day: 4/30: Donuts? What's your choice?

Do you like donuts? Yeast or cake? Glazed? With sprinkles?...

Yes to all of them, but I agree that these:

At Dunkin" I like...brownie batter when available in February.
The one exception is the Brownie Batter filled donuts at Dunkin for Valentines. We always get a dozen to freeze. We will split one every couple of weeks until they are gone...

are my favorite! (I never realized they would freeze well. I will have to do that next year!)

I have fond memories of the local bakery where I grew up - going in and staring at the (barely eye-level to me) display case, picking out whatever I wanted, or my aunt just bringing a box by out of the blue...

And we recently discovered this place: https://theholydonut.com/
thanks to a suggestion from here on the DIS. :teeth: We went on one of our trips up to DS's college, and I really liked them!

 @apirateslifeforme - I didn’t know your story. It must really be hard to explain all that to your little one.

Thank you. I really don't know how to explain it to Josh. At times, I can't even wrap my brain around it. If it weren't for the photos, I don't think I'd even believe it myself. Josh does understand "living in Heaven," as we lost one of our cats a few years ago, but I think it's hard to understand about his siblings because he never actually saw them. I just keep telling him about it because I was always told to tell him his story from the very beginning (we also had to use donor eggs to have him) - that way it will be no big deal, rather than telling him when he's older and having a big reveal, which apparently causes a lot of anger in the child.

Dinner was Culver's burgers and fries with mini flavor of the day brownie batter. I needed eat my feelings after the Costco shop.

Ooh, Culver's! When we're in Florida, there is one around the corner from my in-laws in Clearwater (or maybe technically it's in Largo). We like their fish and chips, too. But they don't seem to have different flavors of ice cream at that location? Just chocolate and vanilla. It seems that the only way I can get the frozen custard ice cream is to get a specialty sundae - I like the caramel cashew. We missed it this year. Not enough time in our trip (plus none of us really needed it... ;) )

I can take or leave donuts. I won't seek them out. But I also won't turn down a Boston Creme or a paczki or an apple fritter. I almost never get one at Dunkin, they're so small, you're done with it in 3 bites.

Speaking of Dunkin, one of ours is doing some interesting things. Last week they posted photos of apple pie croissants, apple pie munchkins, and cheddar everything bagels. My mom went out and got some of the munchkins and bagels. This week they posted those items plus vanilla frosting-stuffed croissants, something that looked like whoopie pies but made with the chocolate cake glazed donuts, and a whole bunch of other treats. I swear I gained 20 lbs. just looking at that post.

And Costco makes some pretty delicious danishes, I must say. I like the cheese and cherry ones.

So I must say that I am hopeful today...our governor has reported a decline in hospitalizations over the past week (maybe it's 9 days now), so Stage 1 of our reopening will happen on May 20. Only certain things, but some of them are "remaining retail" and hair salons. I just wonder if that means that A) can more than one person go (I don't own a car, so when I get to go out, it's with my mom and Josh), and B) what about our library? I'd be surprised if there were 10 people in there at any one time (unless it's Storytime, which I'm sure won't be taking place for a while anyway, as this last session would have ended by now anyway). And I'm still hopeful that the preschool might reopen again. That would only be for a few weeks.

My mom went to Target a few days ago and she got stopped by someone at the door. A "not young but not elderly either" man asked her if she was aware that she was there during the senior hours. She said, "Yes, I'm 65. I'll be 66 in June." He said, "Oh...well...you don't look it." She really doesn't, honestly. DH and I both told her that was a compliment, but she's still miffed by it. She insists that it's because the store was so empty, "Can Target really afford to offend people and turn them away?" But she said he wasn't wearing the Target uniform of red shirt and khaki pants, so she didn't know if he worked there, if he was some random person, or I suggested he was mall security making sure that nobody tried to go into the mall area that's blocked off. I keep telling her that it was a compliment, just smile and say thank you :goodvibes

Boy, we are passionate about donuts! LOL

I also like these. I have never had them with an aged tequila, but I very much enjoy aged tequila, so I will have to give this one a try next year...

Do you ever do tequilas with desserts? That's my favorite part of Mexican night here. A really nicely aged tequila goes so well with chocolate. Sometimes I do a Mexican chocolate cake and with the extra notes of cinnamon and pepper in the cake certain tequilas just accent it so perfectly. We recently started adding a shot of Chumocos Reposado to hot chocolate. That makes for an interesting drink.

I never heard of a brownie batter filled donut, Monkey Dawn and Nox, that sounds soo good! It's so hard to find a brownie mix that comes out chocolatey and not all dried out so as a donut filling that might be the perfect solution :D

I totally missed that someone else names the same donut, I guess I was on autopilot reading those replies. It would be really easy to miss these as they only have them for about two weeks from the beginning of February until Valentines Day and they are often sold out early in the day. Then *poof* they are gonzo.

My Echo Show just showed me a recipe for ice cream bread. I know what we are having for breakfast this weekend.

I made that once with a butter pecan. If you are doing something like that you may want to consider adding extra of whatever the solid ingredient is.

Yes to all of them, but I agree that these:

are my favorite! (I never realized they would freeze well. I will have to do that next year!)

If you are going to freeze them, ask for sprinkles on top (assuming you can stand sprinkles) if you have to special order. That will help keep the plastic from sticking to them in the freezer. I freeze two to a sandwhich bag, backs together and then put my two packs in a ziplock freezer bag. And freeze them as soon as you can for max freshness.

And Costco makes some pretty delicious danishes, I must say. I like the cheese and cherry ones.

Their muffins take up a good amount of my freezer space.

I forgot to add that in addition to boston cream and glazed, I do enjoy a good specialty donut from these places:

Paula's Donuts here in Buffalo -- https://paulasdonuts.com/
They often have a donut of the month like the Cannoli donut!

Then when we are in OBX we like Duck Donuts -- https://www.duckdonuts.com/

Just wanted to add to this very important donut conversation... :)

So much to comment on about donuts.

The good thing is they are only available once a year or I'd OD on them. DD and I text each other when we find a Dunkin that has them.

You have put a lot of thought and research into this.

I do sometimes eat "Amish crack" which are these cinnamon powered sugared holes that are amazing , place is local that is franchising now.
This reminded me that the donuts at the Amish Market near DD's house are really good, large donuts for $1 each. And if you go right before they close, they give you 2 for $1.

Then when we are in OBX we like Duck Donuts -- https://www.duckdonuts.com/
We have on nearby in Newark, DE. We were so glad when we saw they were coming.

1. Biopsy results came back that I’ve been waiting on for over a week. BENIGN.🎉
Excellent news Grumpy's Gal!

I will admit that we both go when we shop. I go because sending him at the best of times, unless I can make a very detailed list and the store has everything, is not a great idea. I cant imagine sending him with a list of stuff meant to last two weeks with the way store shelves are now. And having him pick out produce beyond bananas is just a non starter. He goes in case the line situation is dicey. I am compromised and he is not so if the line situation is bad (long with people not respecting distances) I can leave and he can still pay. We've left if the store seemed too crowded for us to shop at a distance I felt safe.

I dont love donuts. I worked in a bakery when I was younger and the constant access to samples somehow killed my loving them. Now I will still eat them if we end up in the same place and there isnt something else I want more but I dont go out of my way to get them. Sounds like the man has a twin brother! Fortunately for us there is no ban on multiple family members entering markets. When I send him to the store solo he almost always buys more than needed in an effort to get it just right. Need 1 mango? He'll buy 3 and maybe a papaya too because they look similar. I'm coming to see these actions as the surprise in the box of Cracker Jacks...sometimes:lmao:.

Tonight's dinner was shrimp scampi with lots of garlicky sauce. This version is made with orzo (the box is now finished. Yeah!!) in one pan which made the dishwashers happy. Added some microwaved broccoli and the last of some cooked spinach for a complete meal. There was still half a pan of spice cake left for dessert. Wanted to change it around a bit so smeared a thin layer of orange marmalade a top then toasted it. It was just warm enough to melt the whipped cream a touch.

I so used to love doughnuts but most of my favorites are no longer made: freshly fried by Abuelita, the grandmother of a childhood friend; White Castle's wheat donuts with orange icing is long gone and just a memory. Entenman's used to make whole wheat doughnuts but I haven't seen them in ages. Just as well in the greater scheme of life since I'd probably hoard them and not share;).

Hmm I've never noticed brownie batter donuts at Dunkies. But I'm more of a plain Jane when it comes to ordering - not even any foo foo drinks for me, just either a hot or iced decaf with milk, no sugar. If DD is with me she will get a flavor shot of the month, generally, with milk and no extra sugar. She would be likely to get a brownie batter donut though, lol. We will have to keep our eyes out for them next Valentine's Day!

What a small world, I have been eating Paula's donuts since before she opened her shop. My mom worked with Paula's husband many many years ago and he used to bring in her amazing donuts!!!!

I love donuts but I don't eat them often at all. My favorites are Boston creme, blueberry glazed, cinnamon sugar, plain glazed, really I could go on and on which is why I hardly ever eat them.

I am so stressed today. The estimate for our electrical work came in and it is crazy high. I am glad I guess that our Hawaii trip was cancelled, all that money and then some will need to go to this repair.
