Quarantine and chill and kindness chatty clubhouse: Jump in and join the conversation! All is welcome!

Lynn, go enjoy your hot tub along with some R&R!

:) PollyannaMom. How is your son doing? 🙏 Praise God! Great update!

:grouphug:❤️Snowysmom

Big hug and prayers extra also to B&B, Carol, and of course all impacted by the hurricane.

Dad did get us 12 more Aquarelle wipes which is a blessing. He didn't end up having my car looked at because we both agree the brakes seem perfectly fine and it's not as though the car travels much. Plus, the repair shop said it would take 3 hours! Dad also needs to clarify with them that he really just wanted an inspection not that the car definitely needed work done. We really liked this local place when they had a location a few blocks away from us which is how dad originally found them years ago. They had to move before Covid began when the owner of the lot that housed their shop forever was wanting a huge increase in rent. New location is not convenient to us at all really. Dad will be checking into neighborhood options for a simple fluid/brake check instead.

❤️🙏extra :cheer2::to all of my Quacker family!

Dad checked in from Florida and is good. :tigger:
Excellent News!
It is kind of them to think of me today.
It is, you have a great family group around you. I wish you peace today and going forward.

My folks are in Ft. Myers, here is what I posted on the Hurricane Ian thread:
Talked to my folks in Ft. Myers. Both house they are building and the rental house they are staying at sustained no damage and no flooding, which was lucky on their part as the sub floor & sheet rock just went in at the new house. Dock & boats stayed put. Had 6+ feet of water off the Caloosahatchee come up the yard in 1 hours time. New house in Alva/Babcock Ranch area and rental is in south Ft. Myers area. No electric, no public water/sewer. House next to them didn't flood either, however house on other side had a good foot or two in it. They are not smack right next to each other, they each have a couple of acres of elbow room & elevation difference. There was one gas station w/ very long lines open near them. They are prepared for the long haul, at least at the moment. We will see how they feel about it a week in w/ no AC & no running water. It sounds like they dodged a bullet, but they are a bit shell shocked from the damage to the greater Ft. Myers area. They dealt with a lot when Dorian hit so they are prepared for how long clean up will take and cognizant of the scope of destruction.

So, they and the neighbors they holed up with all made it thru relatively unscathed thankfully. Their group included two groups of neighbors, 18 & 20 year old grandsons of one of the neighbors and someone's 89 year old mother. And no, I have no idea what she was doing there. Or who she was.

So luckily they made out okay. We will see what the next days/weeks bring.

We are expecting the rain from the storm to hit us here starting tomorrow night and thru the majority of the weekend. I'm not at all sure what we will be doing with ourselves...no good movies playing (I already checked!) and I may go stir crazy sitting in the house for 2 days straight. We were tossing around the idea of going to Lancaster - I suppose we still could and just dodge the rain.

Dinner this evening will be a tenderloin grilled, caesar salad and maybe some roasted potatoes.

Glad you’re going to your DDIL’s tonight and she is making meatballs for you, @Snowysmom. :grouphug:

Also hope all our friends/family in FL are doing ok. 🙏🏻 (Just seeing @easyas123’s post, glad they made it through!)

@flyingdumbo127 Some of the prices you quoted were crazy! $5 for a box of pudding? :scared1: Is right! I was in the store flabbergasted trying to pick out toilet paper and toothpaste! I’ve been doing more of those items on AmazonSmile so I can “shop around” a little more, but even then… The paper towels we buy were $30 something. At least I don’t have to carry them if I buy them this way. I buy the ones that rip apart and yell at everyone if they take more than a half unnecessarily  (and sent out an email to all who live here explaining that electric rates are going up 60% here soon, and natural gas almost 40%, so we need to figure out how we are going to cut back our use of those!) so maybe it’s a savings in the long run, idk. But just crazy. Toilet paper that used to be $12 for a big pack is now $17.99. I used to go to WalMart more often than I do, I may have to start going back more, even once a month to stock up, and there are certain things I like to get at Aldi’s, will have to do the same there, especially with butter for the holidays! 😅 🤣

Have a good evening, everyone! 🐥

Big:hug:Easyas and safety extra prayers for your folks and their neighbors! Of course, always, for dear you!
:hug:PollyannaMom, that update brightened my afternoon! :tigger:

:hug:to you as well, Pea! ITA about the $5 pudding. 12 cans of Campbell's Chicken broth this morning on Amazon had gone up to $53! Makes the typical $1.99 price at Ralph's (on sale this week for $1.67) or Pavilions dirt cheap. Whenever we do order on Amazon, it is always through Amazon Smile. We support the ACS on it. We have a week or so left of Prime to think about whether we want to try and get anything else. Dad will be going to a Pavilions on Monday that has a Coinstar Machine in a secluded spot of the store. Our small plastic coin jar (can hold as much as $35 or so) is nearly full. He might cash it into the Coinstar for Amazon so we can use it toward some needed items that way. Every 🪙adds up especially for us. As an FYI to all, there is no charge when you choose a Coinstar e gift card. You get a printed receipt from the machine with a claim code--amazon for us. That is like found money in a way. Don't discount your change! :)

Sending extra peace to you Snowysmom along with a hug.

Love to all.

Good evening everyone.

I'll try and go back and catch up from since I last posted later. I slept almost the entire day yesterday. took a second Covid test today and the line was faint but there, so I guess I have Covid thanks to my grandkids. Other than being really tired yesterday I just feel like I have my normal head cold, a little stuffy with a mild cough. I never lost my sense of smell or taste, so I was a little shocked when the test showed positive. I planned on staying in quarantine the recommended 5 days anyway to be safe, and I'll mask for a few days beyond that til I test negative again. My aunt made it out of Florida before the hurricane hit and is coming to Philadelphia on Wednesday, leaving a couple days before I do to head back to Florida. I haven't seen her for several years and really hoped to spend some time with her, but I don't want to put her or my parents at risk. My daughter the nurse said by the end of next week I should be in the clear and past being contagious. I hope so. My trip is in 2 weeks so at least I will be good for that. I am so looking forward to this get away that my husband forced me to book.

Those of you that are on medicare, how did you find the supplemental insurance. We lose my husbands coverage through work at the end of the year. I can keep what the city offers which will include prescriptions which is the most important thing to me but it will be around $700 a month for both of us combined. Is that a good price? I have asked my mom but I'm lucky she tells me when they have a medical issue, she won't answer any questions about this. It is just so confusing, and since my husband isn't 65 but is on medicare I'm not sure he will be covered and he needs it more than I do.

I have seen the posts about butter and I may stock up on a few more pounds but believe it or not I have 10 pounds in the refrigerator right now. stocked up last year at Aldi's when it was $1.87 a pound. I planned on doing more baking than I did. I'm wondering if the local markets will offer the free turkey this year for Thanksgiving.

Hope everyone is doing ok, especially those who were or will be impacted by the hurricane.

We called a local insurance agent who specializes in Medicare. She went over all the meds, found out which plans had low or no co pays for things like lab tests, PCP visits, how much it was for specialist visits, etc. and looked for the best plan for us. We ended up going with Aetna for supplemental and Silver Script for our prescription coverage. There was no charge.

I've been on Medicare since 2018. It was so confusing, especially at first.

I'm in the Maryland State Pension system, having retired from a county job so that's where my supplemental (Carefirst, Caremark and Aetna) comes from. It's $110 a month (I'm single) and includes what Medicare doesn't cover, plus Silverscript, Dental and Vision. I went with Carefirst but also had/have the option of Kaiser. My friend went with Kaiser and I'm not a fan. They seem locked in. I go where I want and my insurance is accepted including out of town, such as when I travel to Florida.

I have various copays for prescriptions with the highest being $80 for 3 months and some being free. My primary care copay is $10 but my doc never charges me - I've been his patient since 1993. Specialists are $25, but only one specialist has ever charged the copay.

My DD was on my insurance before Medicare and also on my work insurance. Being my dependent ended at age 26, she was working and also a student, but how it was handled was at 2 different rates 1 over 65/1 under 65, that being the higher rate. At 26 she went on to her own insurance separate because she changed jobs and qualified for full benefits on her own dime.

It's possible that for your husband there might be a similar setup for supplemental insurance. I obviously don't know, having not dealt with any other companies or situations.

The one thing I will say is 'ask lots of questions and take notes'. The people who do these things seem to assume that you will catch all the info and know and understand what it's all about. I didn't, but I feel more comfortable now.

Edit: Our open season is starting soon. Who knows what stuff will cost for the next year! We go by calendar year so what I described in my plan ends Dec 31.

Edit 2: Went and reviewed my options. The Kaiser medicare advantage option is about $30 cheaper than what I have now. I'll stay with what I have.

:grouphug:feel better🙏dear Taz! I'm also so sorry you do have Covid. Please do take care! Feel better.

No help on Medicare here. Great suggestions shared. Dad, I do remember, years ago at a Walmart of all places came across a kiosk for supplemental insurance that was helpful. Wishing all of you in need of extra insurance the very best that you get needed coverage! I know it can sure be expensive and not an easy process either.

Sweet Dreams, friends. Stay safe please!

Both stores I was in had plenty. But we heard on the radio on the way home..that butter may be in short supply for the holidays, and that the price is going to skyrocket. So better stock up now if any of you plan on doing holiday baking :(
Yikes!
Intently watching the news this morning. We were supposed to leave in 3 weeks for a week in a rental condo on Sanibel. Not looking good for that trip. Causeway to the island was breeched. Thinking of possible replacement trips. I was really looking forward to it.
Sanibel is on my bucket list. I've heard that it's a good place for shelling especially after storms. I imagine it was hit pretty hard. I wonder what the shelling would be like now.

@PollyannaMom glad your dad is ok too.

Dh"s company has an office in FM, on First St and Jackson St; between the Cleveland Ave bridge and the Edison bridge; by the Repertory Theater and Art Center. No one has heard from anyone in the office since Monday. All the FL offices (they have at least 13) were open Monday (and maybe Tuesday? I'm not sure) so that people could get their laptops and geat, and lock stuff up; then they were sent home for the week. I'm sure they closed the offices in GA/SC/NC/VA for today, and probably Monday too.

I hope you feel better. Butter is good to stock up, lol. I'm the weird one that puts it in a ziplock before I put it in the freezer, to prevent freezer burn. I do reuse the same ziplock over and over; I just leave them in the freezer (take the butter out to put in the fridge without the bag) and it stays in there. I have a lb in the fridge and one in the freezer, but I just used a bunch to make those whoopie pies for DH's office, so it's time to replace it all. I use a lb of butter (never margarine!!!) at least once a month, depending on how much actual cooking I'm doing, lol.

Considering the fact that all the shells are going to be mixed in with seaweed, dead sea creatures, broken glass, pieces of wood, etc,....I'd say pretty dangerous

.

@lynxstch hope the floor guy showed up, or at least called!

For those worrying about sour cream shortages, you can use creme fraiche or Mexican crema in its place, if it's for taste. I wouldn't subsitute in a cake or something where it needs to be that thicker texture.

We made it through unscathed. Lost power for a couple of hours yesterday, but it came right back up. I lost a lot of dead wood off the tall palm tree on the side of my house; enough to fill a 25 gal trash can with small pieces. The big branches and palm fronds, I just set in a pile next to the trash can. I can't open the back gate to get to the backyard, because the gate got shoved back and the latch broke. (there is a cement pad right behind it, and the pad sits higher than the gate) That cleanup will have to wait for DH to fix the gate for me.

Our retention pond rose considerably. It's usually 2 ft down from the edge, and it got within an inch of coming up the banks. First picture is yesterday morning; 2nd if from yesterday evening.

I am going to say, I am tired of Totino's pizza, pizza rolls, and PF Chang tv dinners. I get them for quick lunches for us; and I felt the need to use them up this week before/during the storm. Sun-Thurs, that's what I ate for 3 meals a day. I will be making something else for meals today, even if it's pb&j, lol. DH gets home tomorrow afternoon; he changed his flight a few days ago, when we though we were going to take a direct hit here. He gets one more night of fun, lol.

I'm going to go get some work done, y'all have a good day!

Good morning all. Typical Fall day in store, will only be 62. Calling for a high of 55 on Sunday--way too early for that. Making me debate if I should close up the AC unit outside, or wait in case we get a burst of warm weather and need it. Only had the heat on one night , but set it at 68 so it wouldn't be cool in here for Don (DH). I have noticed that when it's cooler at night, 3 of my cats burrow under the covers up against me in bed, lol.

Floor guy never called or texted yesterday, which I find rude. But about 5 minutes ago, he texted that he's back in action today and if 4:30 is okay with us, he'll be here then.

I do need to weedwack around the inside of the garden fence, and want to spray the outside edge with my homemade weed killer. I also plan on doing our side of the neighbors fence since he hasn't touched it in months. It makes it look like it's ours since its at the side of our front yard for a good distance, and I think that's pretty ignorant of them.

The little boys on the other side of us are so cute. The other day they were on their swingset, and spotted me. Yelled 'hi Miss Lynn',,and one of them said, wait Miss Lynn, I need to talk to you. He came running over and I asked him (Harlem, the younger one is Cash), what was wrong. He said nothing, but you need to give me a hug, I'm going to New York today (his Dad lives in NY). They both have different dads, and the guy next door is the stepfather to both of them). He gave me a bear hug, and looks at me seriously, and says 'Miss Lynn, you have to watch Cash, he's a troublemaker. You can put him in quiet time if you see him doing things outside he shouldn't do"--lol! Harlem is 7 and Cash is 5. They are the most courteous, polite, and friendly little boys we have ever had live next door.

Have a nice morning all

Good to hear you made it through safely as well as @easyas123 's folks.

This storm is unbelieveable! The nerve of it to curve itself into the Gulf, do such terrible damage and then cross over Florida like a giant bully heading for more vulnerable areas such as Ga, SC, NC, meanwhile swatting and ransacking all the way.

Here, we will have rain starting this afternoon with mild to moderate windiness. This is forecast for the next 4-5 days. Glad I was at the beach last weekend.

Someone mentioned shells on Sanibel. I would imagine people will be able to gather them, but what I've noticed is they tend to be so broken unless they are little after a storm. The Gulf coast is usually a great place to find shells. I can't resist and always put something in my pocket when I walk the beaches, even if it's just a smooth rock.

In other news, DD is on the way to New York with the grands and my other DD by another mother. (Actually I have a bunch of these and a funny story to go with it from when we all dined at Tavern on the Green in Central Park years ago. A story for another day.)

On arrival in NYC today they are boarding a Disney ship for a Disney Cruise to Bermuda, and then back on Wednesday. This was booked on impulse just before the storm started to make news and has been touch and go for the last week. DD has decided she loves the Disney ships and she definitely loves cruising.

Disney offered 30% off and they got the cheapest cabin - inside. They don't really care as the girls would sleep anywhere and DD and friend have been friends since they were 10 years old, and have spent many nights here together growing up. Friends mother died in 2017 and she has grown closer to me since then as she owns a home nearby.

The plan is mostly to enjoy the ship. They are doing one day going to a pink sand beach and that's it. First night, the girls get the kids club which they love and the women go to Palo for dinner. After that it's whatever. Last trip in April was all the Princess stuff, Bibbity Bobbity whatever and the Princess Tea so the girls have multiple dresses from that adventure. School was closed today and Wednesday so missing 2 days.
edit: The ship is Disney Magic and it's Halloween themed.

5-night Bermuda cruise on the Disney Magic. Round-trip from New York to Kings Wharf (Bermuda). A "Halloween on the High Seas" cruise.
2022 departures: September 30, October 5, October 16, October 21, October 26.

Good Morning, so glad everyone here has weathered the storm. It’s been beautiful the last couple of days, lots of sun In my area.
Yesterday I baked chocolate chip cookies ( Kris’s favorite). He always says mine are the best. I just use the recipe on the bag, so I think it’s just ”manipulation “ 😂🥰. He figures I‘ll bake more with compliments, he is right!

I am looking for a very moist, chewy Snickerdoodle recipe. I love the ones at Noodles. Anyone have a good recipe? I am going to bake banana bread in a few minutes. We will be freezing it and taking it on our trip. I‘m sure we will have all kinds of baked goods, since we are traveling with my two sisters and their husbands. We sure like our sweets especially homemade.

Have a good day everyone

I can't help with the snickerdoodle recipe, but I like to make oatmeal cookies (from the Quacker package), but no raisins, no white sugar (only dark brown), and add cinnamon chips...so chewy...

When I do my cc cookies, I use more brown sugar than white. I like the flavor better.

Mmmm, cookies...

Happy Friday and last day of September from me as well.

Big hugs and continuing prayers for all in the storm's path or dealing with another storm of life. Safety and love. Reminder in all, God is our Refuge! Dad is at laundromat followed by Ralph's--typical Friday morning. Extremely thankful to God also to have heard from Steve and Ruth. Thank you all for keeping them in your prayers. I was also grateful to have gotten to talk with Terri and briefly Barbara Ann yesterday. I am planning to see Terri when she is out here on Tuesday. That is always a blessing. Waiting today for a few packages to come.

🕊️❤️to all. I shall check back later!
