I have been vacillating among different flight itineraries for a trip to Cleveland this summer, but had made some specific car rental reservations with National using a VISA code and coupon, and Emerald Aisle; you know the rule- when you find a rate you can live with, you book it! Today I finally pinned down my flights, so was looking over my car ressies and discovered I didn't have anything that'd fit my final flight plans. I made a new reservation and was luke-warm about it. A few days ago I'd tried this itinerary and it was $81 but didn't book it; now I couldn't get it for lower than $113. Still, not bad for 4 days, so I booked the reservation. As I was canceling the other car reservations I'd made, I decided to try modifying an existing reservation. Well, I now have the exact same reservation that I was holding for $113 only it's now $81!
I looked a little closer at the 2 reservations. Today's ressie was at $22 a day, and the prior one was at $12 a day. When I modified the prior reservation, National still gave me the $12 rate!! I am SO PSYCHED that I thought to modify the existing reservation, just to see what'd happen!! It saved me $32!
Lesson learned: Modify existing reservations to see if the previously-booked rate will still be offered in addition to making a new reservation!!
