Princess Phoebe's Pre-WISH-Trip Report (arriving in MK 4/17/10)

Well, I've been checking in on everyone but haven't taken the time to post here for our own PTR in a while. Last week was pretty busy and DH has weekends off right now (woohoo! the kids love seeing him during normal human hours!).

I have two very part time jobs, one of which was busier last week. Job one is selling a nutritional supplement called Tahitian Noni Juice. It's a networking company but I only signed up to be able to buy the product at a discount (like joining Mary Kay). I've been letting that business go, as I'm terrible at sales. As much as I love people I HATE being sold to therefore I hate selling. I mention it to friends and neighbors if there is a reason it comes up but other than that I just buy it for ourselves. My other job is babysitting/day care. The only child I have regularly is a 2 yr old I've had since she was 2 months. She and Tessa fight like siblings. It's funny AND annoying. My schedule with her changes all the time because her dad is in the same law enforcement agency as my DH (that's how they found me) and her mom is a nurse. Right now I have her for overnights, which is easier than days, but it takes up more of my free time at night because she's on a different schedule than my girls. I also occasionally have other kids, which I did last week, and it keeps me away from my computer. I don't love it, but we are all used to this little girl like she is part of the family, and it helps bring in enough income to make DHs car payment!

My "full-time" job was busy last week, too, as I had some extra appts and meetings to set up and attend. Phoebe's wheelchair appt has been made but it's not until Feb. I doubt we will have a new one before her trip, which should be fine. I still need to figure out a PT to help us with that, as her school PT quit and her private therapist hasn't seen her in many months. I wanted someone to be at the appt with us to help think of features that will be good to order. We had the current chair for 5 years so I need someone who can help me look into the future in terms of her needs.

I also attended a meeting at her school last week (an MET? I think). It should have been part of her IEP last fall but the main purpose of this is to consult with the school psychologist and the evaluation had not yet been completed. They evaluate every three years, but she has never had this done before. She started school at age 3 and there are different guidelines for the younger age groups. (Stefanilyn was just talking about this on her TR regarding supplemental insurance) So the psychologist determined that Phoebe has moderate MR and even though she already qualifies to attend this special school based on vision, speech and orthopedic needs, she now also qualifies developmentally. I had no doubt that they would arrive at those findings but it was a little weird to sit there and hear the words "moderate MR" when talking about my baby. (Oops, in case you are wondering, MR is Mental Retardation). It would have brought me to tears when she was little, just thinking about that label, but now it is actually helpful to have it as it gives all the paperwork a detail that helps explain why she needs what she does. It will be easier to qualify for various types of assistance. She is doing so well at this state school and I can see definite steps in her development, like her watching the screen at the movies! Her teacher asked me if I wanted her to be potty trained (I sat there, waiting for the punchline!) and said that she will start it in the spring when the weather is warmer. The director told me that this teacher has been successful with every child she's ever attempted to train. So there's something to look forward to! :yay: I also learned that Phoebe will be riding at the hippotherapy center again this semester. I had been told the kids could only go one semester per year because of the demand, but she is going again. Horses are her favorite thing in the world and she hyperventilates when she gets near them! She hasn't ridden since before Cmas break so she will be one happy girl when she rides again this Thurs!

My husband has been talking about quitting smoking for months, well years, but seriously for months, and set NYE as his last smoke. :cheer2: He didn't even make it one day. :guilty: He smokes at work, as do many of his LE coworkers, and in his car and uses it to keep himself awake when driving home from work at 3 am. He told me he was going to do it for me, but I told him, if he didn't want to do it for himself, then do it for our girls. They need their daddy to be around a long, long time. I shudder to think about life for Phoebe when either one of us, let alone both of us, are gone. I almost think it would be better for her to go first, but of course I can't bring myself to think about any of this in detail. All I can do is try my hardest to be healthy and stick around as long as I can, and encourage (okay, nag) him to do the same. So, he decided he needed a doc appt to try the scrip that helps you quit. As soon as he said that I made him the appt. ;) He started them yesterday, and is supposed to keep smoking for one more week. There are some curious side effects listed on the package, so this could be fun. :sad2:

And I mentioned, trying my best to be healthy....I have inherited some sturdy English and German DNA, built for surviving the trip on the Mayflower (as my endocrinologist explained). I also have some hormones out of whack, which caused my already "curvy" figure to expand quite a bit about 15 yrs ago. I tried everything I could think of to lose the weight and realized 100 lbs and several years later, that non-fat high carb diets were not the way to go. :rolleyes1 The low-carb craze had not been introduced yet and the several docs I asked for help never did anything more than hand me a ditto copy of the (old) food pyramid. It was the fourth doc who found my hormone problem and by then I felt so horrible and worthless that I didn't have the energy and motivation to try. Then DH was hired for his current job when we still lived in TX and he had to train out of state for 5 MONTHS. I had a 4 yr old Phoebe (infantile) and a 5 month old Tessa (infantile but ACTIVE). I lost 20 lbs while he was in training, because I really just didn't have time to eat. It wasn't the smartest way to lose weight but I wasn't thinking about it (didn't have time to think - I had virtual twins) and was simply encouraged that I lost! That was 3 yrs ago and I've been re-motivated ever since. I did lose another 10 after that but with maximum effort and a lot of ups and downs. I've been so frustrated with the minimum results from my maximum effort. That's when I consulted the endo who told me there's nothing wrong with me, I just need to thank my ancestors for being able to survive starving conditions as my body conserves energy verrrrrry well. Thanks guys! So I'm sick of it, I want to be done with it, and I'm giving it some serious, serious effort. We bought an elliptical and starting this past weekend I am now working out TWICE a day, 45 min workouts. Another cut into my computer time. :guilty: I now eat smaller meals than my 4 and 8 yr olds do. I've been able to see a couple more lbs come off in recent weeks but it's so frustrating to watch Biggest Loser and see women in the 200s losing 10-20 lbs in one week! Aren't the bigger people supposed to lose bigger lbs? I feel like a super model that needs to lose 5 lbs, when I lose one and get excited about it. If I can keep this momentum going for a full year and still see very small results, I'm going to look into lap-band surgery. I don't know if I'd qualify, since on paper I look pretty healthy. I long ago gave up hoping to lose weight for special events or certain dates, but I do hope that I can lose a few more before our trip. I do want to feel decent in pictures, but I also want to have energy and be able to keep up with the kids and even carry them through each day if that's what's needed. Sorry to fill this up with what feels like a confessional, but there you have it. That's what's been on my mind and calendar for the week. :)

You have been one busy lady. I am so with you on the frustrations of both DH quitting smoking and losing weight. I have PCOS which is in essence a hormone issue and have trouble losing weight. I am trying though. We can be motivation for each other. :cool1: Good job on working out. I've started doing the treadmill and those ball workouts. Oh boy am I feeling it the last 2 days. Soo sore. I know we can both drop at least a few pounds before our trips though.

Kudos to you and your DH for trying to get yourselves in better health for your girls! :thumbsup2 Good luck with the weight loss plan and try not to get too discouraged! :goodvibes

I'm so happy to hear DH is giving a serious effort towards quitting smoking. What an incredible gift he is giving his daughters (and you). Save all that cigarette money and tell him to buy himself an awesome souvenier money at Disney! He deserves it!

I totally get it when it comes to labels. Bella's geneticist put a "developmentally delayed" label on her chart last year when she wasn't potty trained at 4 (Because other docs advised me not to!!!). It made me so ANGRY! But at the same time, that label has made her eligible for more services and helped secure her secondary insurance (for last year at least - we won't know about this year for another few weeks). However, for Phoebe, MR is such an antiquated label with a historically negative stigma and I understand why you would be taken aback at that diagnosis. Congnitively delayed is much more appropriate and accurate. I hope she continues to qualify for more services and make progress at her school.

Good for your to take time to focus on your own health. I wish you lots of luck in losing weight and making it to your goal. I think there is a W.I.S.H (We're insipred to stay Healthy) forum on the DIS that you may find inspiring and supportive.

And :dance3: for horse back riding again! I have heard wonderful things about hippotherapy!

I think in some ways the benefit of exercising will be a healthier you. Perhaps not a lighter, thinner you, but definitely a healthier you. Keep at it!:thumbsup2

You can do it! And if you need a running partner or something let me know! You not horrible far from me! I hate running but I have to do it for the job. So I never mind doing it! And I don't know if you guys have a pool near you, but I know swimming is great! DH and I do that every weekend. Horrible for you hair yes but good for the rest of your body!~

I know you can do it!

When I read this I could so relate. We just recieved many of Jonnie's diagnosis's this last summer and we just got an IEP for him this year. Some of those diagnosis's were kinda hard to hear. My husband had a hard time understanding why I was a little upset about them because we both agreed that having access to the extra services was the best thing for him and knowing why he has such a hard time with certain things can only help us help him. Still when I read the docs full report I was so torn I diden't know whether to cheer because we finally had what we needed to get him help or cry because that's my little boy. I felt the same way the day after Christmas Vacation when he boarded the Special Ed bus for the first time to go to school for the first time as a special ed student. I am so happy he has what he needs and is finally making progress not to mention that he is surrounded by kids who don't think he's "odd" or "weird" (labels kids in his regular class were giving him) but in some of those IEP meetings it just felt weird.
Okay sorry to get off on such a tangent I just wanted to let you know I understand geuss that took a little more explanation than I thought it would. That's great that Pheobe gets to ride again. How wonderful. We've been thinking of looking into that for Jonnie. Oh and I'm crossing my fingers for you that her teacher has lots of luck getting her potty trained soon! .

Jennifer! That is exactly what I have. I actually diagnosed myself when we were trying to get pregnant and I met someone with the same symptoms. When I went to the fertility specialist I asked about PCOS and described my symptoms and was told, of course it's PCOS, as if everyone knew what it was. Apparently the first three docs I talked to didn't know!!! I never realized that insulin is a hormone, so it makes sense that when that one is out of whack so are some others. Weird part is, I'm not diabetic, or even pre-diabetic, no blood pressure issues, or cholesterol. I just can't lose this dang weight! I mentioned that I lost 20lbs 3 yrs ago, well, the next summer I was staying with my kids, my sis and her kids, at my parents vacation home near the beach. It's a fitness-lover's haven. I decided I would work out like crazy while I was there, taking advantage of my sis being able to babysit for the hour I'd be gone. I was actually running part of the time (I HATE running) and only missed one week out of four that I was there. A few of those days were my period when I just did NOT feel like it, and the other few days were when a friend flew in for a visit but we were very active, like walking to and from the beach (a couple of miles easy) walking around the county fair all day, going dancing one night. At the end of this crazy workout month, my grand total of weight loss? Three measly little lbs. I slacked off again the rest of the year because my effort was basically not rewarded. I'm not giving up this time. I'm serious about doing it for a year so I can at least have a legit complaint if/when I look into surgery.

Kudos to you and your DH for trying to get yourselves in better health for your girls! :thumbsup2 Good luck with the weight loss plan and try not to get too discouraged! :goodvibes

Thanks Dawn! It's so easy to get discouraged and put it on the back burner for yet another year.

I'm so happy to hear DH is giving a serious effort towards quitting smoking. What an incredible gift he is giving his daughters (and you). Save all that cigarette money and tell him to buy himself an awesome souvenier money at Disney! He deserves it!

I told him he could buy whatever he wants. He's thinking a knife or gun. He's just Rambo-ish that way.

The director actually phrased it a bit more eloquently, and used both the developmental delay and MR terms. I think she was expecting me to freak out because she took some time to explain why those terms were important. I already knew, but I appreciated her being aware of my feelings. Docs usually just spit things out without regard for those type of things.

I'll have to check it out.

You're right Jordan. I feel pretty healthy, thankfully I don't have any health problems, yet, and I joke that under all this "fluff" is some serious muscle. ;) With the lifting and carrying I do with Phoebe and all the walking we do just to keep the girls busy, I feel pretty active already. Apparently, not enough though. They claim that more muscle helps burn more fat, but I'm not sure I believe them.

You can do it! And if you need a running partner or something let me know! You not horrible far from me! I hate running but I have to do it for the job. So I never mind doing it! Thanks Dina! We do have a community pool but it's not heated. I have always hated running (kudos to you!!!) but I do love to go hiking. We are only 15 mins or so from Madera Canyon and I love taking the girls up there with our dog and walking around. It's gorgeous! They even have an accessible trail for Phoebe's chair. When Phoebe's in school I sometimes take Tessa and Dallas (the dog) on a more adventurous trail. With the rain coming in the next couple days there will hopefully be some snow up there and I'd love to take Tessa up there to play in it. Let me know if you're ever bored enough to go with us. ;)

Kay, I totally get it. When Phoebe was a baby we didn't know why she was behind and not hitting all her milestones. I hesitated to call about therapy evaluations because it felt like we'd be starting down a road I didn't want to travel. I also was afraid that if she caught up before school age, the labels would follow her. Little did I know that the labels were the least of my concerns for her. She rides an accessible bus to school and I have been known to give a "talking to" to an unsuspecting person who makes a joke about the "short bus". I also hate that "retarded" is still such a popular slang word for something "stupid" or "bad". I was a horrible offender of that back in the day, so I try to be more understanding on that one but I still correct people and repeat back what they said using a different word. Live and learn!

After my update this AM, Dh woke to tell me about his dream last night. It involved Gina Davis baking cookies. Apparently one of the side effects of Chantix is "vivid" dreams. :rotfl2:

I still haven't heard back from Phoebe's Wish coordinator regarding which day we leave GKTW, but I've re-planned everything as if it is 6 days. So now I need some help! Here is my rough outline for the week. The hours listed by the parks is their operating hours that day, not necessarily the times we plan to be there.

Some of you will probably giggle at my rudimentary planning system, while others will roll their eyes at the obsessing over details. I'm just a visual person and things stick better in my brain when I can see them. I just plugged everything in to my Google calendar and let it do the rest.
SOOOOOO, here are my issues at the moment:

We arrive on Saturday, April 17th. Since we haven't been given our flight times I played around on American's website and looked at flights and connections. I'm assuming/hoping we will arrive at MCO around 5ish, and then GKTW around 6 or so. I know I will need to attend an orientation before we are given any tickets, and I think I remember reading that they often do one at 7. Is it nuts to think that we might head straight out to one of the parks that night? I didn't even consider this until I saw that US last day of Mardi Gras is that day/night. I also read that some of you did not recommend kids attending this event, but as I researched a bit more, it seems that the concert area is typically the more crowded and rowdy place. The band for that night is Chicago, and as much as I daydreamed about college romances to their tunes, the kids would be bored to tears. It's the parade, the street performers, the street musicians and the specialty food that interests me. The parks closes at 10pm but they say the performers move over to the Citywalk area after that, which is open til 2am. Not that I think our kids would last til 2, but I remember MaryinAZ's advice that the kids are still on our time zone when we first arrive so it would not feel quite as late to them. What do you guys think? Crazy? If we arrive after the last orientation for the night then I guess it will be a moot point.

Issue number two. I think the girls would enjoy Twinkle Hope's Tea Party on Sunday, but it's midday. I was thinking Sea World might be a good choice for that day because it's probably less crowded than all the others, easier in and out parking, walking etc. They are open 9-7 so I was thinking we could go for a few hours in the morning, come back for the tea party, lunch, rest, whatever, then head back for a couple more hours. I was thinking of reserving Sharks for dinner but you can't do that one in advance, just at the park that day. I don't know if they stay open later than the rest of the park but that might help. Anybody have an opinion if TH Tea Party is worth coming back for? Is Sea World worth going back to afterwards? Another option, if we ended up going to US for Mardi Gras the night before, we could stay "home" on Sunday and spend the whole day at GKTW, because we could move SW to the end of the week. It's all riding on our mysterious flight times for Saturday!

I made Monday, MK day because there are no EMH hours to worry about and they are having Spectro and Wishes. I was able to move our res for CRT for lunch at 1pm. Dinner will be counter service I guess. Any faves to suggest?

Tuesday I have AK/DHS shared. They both open at 9 but DHS stays open later, til 8:30, whereas AK closes at 7 so I was thinking of doing AK first, then DHS whenever we finished. But I have heard nothing but wonderful things about Boma, and I'd love to throw a little Africa into our day at AK. Problem is they only serve breakfast or dinner, no lunch. I don't want to do breakfast because the foods are more American for that meal, and we can easily eat a free meal at GKTW before we leave for the day. So do we go to AK in the AM, leave for DHS in the afternoon and head back to Boma in the evening? Or do DHS first so we are at AK later and next door to the AKL where Boma is located? Or do I give up on the idea of eating at Boma because it's too complicated? :confused3 Also, on the topic of Africa....does anyone know if there is a place to get hair braided while we are there? I'd love to have Tessa's done while we're there.

Wednesday seems fine. No issues. I reserved a lunch at Biergarten, even though I haven't heard much about the food, because the atmosphere seems the most fun for the kids. Phoebe loves music and it's probably the only thing that will keep her awake for a meal. The other option was to just "snack around the world" trying various items as we travel through each country but DH thinks we should have a sit down meal. We'll probably still snack anyway. :thumbsup2

Thursday could be Universal, or Sea World. I think either one will allow us to return to GKTW in time for Christmas. :santa:

Friday can be the other Universal day or Sea World also. What time do you have to check out of GKTW? And what time is the rental car due? The same time you picked it up? If we spend all day at a park I'd hate to interrupt it with a trip to the airport to trade our rental for the new one. (the first week is part of the wish trip, the second week is on our own, so we were told we will have to return the first car). Also, that evening is the Pirate and Princesses party at GKTW. I'm assuming we would be allowed to attend even if we are officially checked out. But that means more driving back and forth, from GKTW to a park, to the airport, to the park, to GKTW and then we depart Orlando.....

Our plan is to leave late Friday night so that the girls will sleep while we drive. Tessa gets very car sick and we can avoid this if she's sleeping. We don't have our plans for week two, but I'm thinking of heading north to maybe Jacksonville, so not too much driving that night. If we left at 9 we would be in Jacksonville by 11:30.

Phew. I'm tired. :lmao:

As long as I'm in an updating mood, I'll do one more quick one before I sign off. My grandmother is doing "well" meaning, no worse, but still in the hospital. They told my mom that they may not release her to return home and that she needed to look at skilled nursing facilities. I actually kind of hope that they do this, because my mom is wearing herself to the bone. The places they looked at are all good, and most are close to my parents home so they can still spend plenty of time with her. My grandfather would be left out, because it's not assisted living, it's skilled nursing. So that would stink. There's no easy answer but I know my mom can't keep going the way she has this past year. Anyway, just wanted to update on that. 'Night everyone!

What do you guys think? Crazy? If we arrive after the last orientation for the night then I guess it will be a moot point.

Since you are planning to take it easy I would say that the party may be doable but it is also possible to be so overhelmed and tired by that time that it not be an option. I would keep it on the list but not as a must do.

Unfortunately i dont know about the tea party. Sorry.

I made Monday, MK day because there are no EMH hours to worry about and they are having Spectro and Wishes. I was able to move our res for CRT for lunch at 1pm. Dinner will be counter service I guess. Any faves to suggest?

I have heard great things about Columbia Harbour house and Caseys. CHH has great tuna sandwhiches and kid friendly choices. Lighter and healthier fare. Caseys has typical ball park fare.

Tusker House also serves African inspired foods for breakfast and lunch. You guys may want to eat there instead of traveling all the way to Boma. Also AK has many hair braiding places in the park.

We never had a set time to bring back the rental. Just brought it back before our flight. It wasn't a big issue.

Phew. I'm tired. :lmao:

Hope this helps a little and remember have fun. Please don't overplan you guys are going to be faced with so many options that it will be hard to choose.

You guys are going to be busy! :goodvibes

As for MK counter service we always like Casey's. The baseball theming is cute but more importantly you can sit outside and look at the castle while you eat :lovestruc

Tusker House is an option for "African inspired" food and the decor is nicely themed too! They offer buffets for B,L and D.

Melissa, how do your kids travel (meaning, how do they hold up while traveling)? For that matter, how do you travel? I know that when we fly/travel (which we have done to visit grandparents), we are all usually wiped out by the evening (read: mom is usually wiped out by the evening). Now granted, I'm getting old and a serious procrastinator, so I am always up packing into the wee hours the night before, but it's something for you to think about. You all sound like you have a little more energy than my family (can you take my 9 year old? She's my hyper one!), so perhaps it is realistic to plan an evening out after traveling. But I think we're just going to get "oriented" and hit our beds on the earlier side that evening.

I made Monday, MK day because there are no EMH hours to worry about and they are having Spectro and Wishes. I was able to move our res for CRT for lunch at 1pm. Dinner will be counter service I guess. Any faves to suggest?

As you know, we are also doing MK that Monday -- yay! Also, we will definitely see each other at CRT -- we have 12:15 ressies for lunch that day. That should be fun!

Tuesday I have AK/DHS shared.

Again, we're on the same wavelength here -- we're doing AK on Tuesday too! We are doing Tusker House for lunch. I also have a ressie at Yak & Yeti for dinner at 5 pm, but that may just be too much for us -- may cancel.

Wednesday seems fine. No issues. I reserved a lunch at Biergarten, even though I haven't heard much about the food, because the atmosphere seems the most fun for the kids. Phoebe loves music and it's probably the only thing that will keep her awake for a meal. We'll probably still snack anyway. :thumbsup2

We're going back to MK on Wednesday, but Epcot sounds like a great plan that day. Biergarten sounds like great fun -- may try to go ourselves, perhaps when we extend our trip. I'm sure there will be something for everyone to eat, and the atmosphere just sounds like fun. Good choice!

Thursday could be Universal, or Sea World. I think either one will allow us to return to GKTW in time for Christmas. :santa:

We are doing DHS on Thursday. Like you, wanted to plan a shorter day for before the Christmas party.

Friday can be the other Universal day or Sea World also. What time do you have to check out of GKTW? And what time is the rental car due? The same time you picked it up? If we spend all day at a park I'd hate to interrupt it with a trip to the airport to trade our rental for the new one. But that means more driving back and forth, from GKTW to a park, to the airport, to the park, to GKTW and then we depart Orlando.....

Hah! Again we will be following alongside you. This time, in exchanging the rental car. We are going to Chef Mickey's for a late breakfast that morning (11:15 am), so I hope we can return the rental car later that day....

Can you give Tessa something like Dramamine? My oldest HAS to take it or else, ahem, we'll all suffer (I get carsick too, so I know what it's like). If not Dramamine, Benadryl also works on nausea (but may not be a good idea for a young child...). I also use those sea bands on Elke for nausea from the chemo, but I know they work well for carsickness too. I'm sure you've probably tried a lot of things

Phew. I'm tired. :lmao:

Sorry I've been out of touch. It's really touch and go with my MIL now -- we're thinking she will not last the day. Lots of sadness, on top of the usual stuff with Elke (entire day at the hospital yesterday for chemo, IV antibiotics, IVIgG, and she's sick on top of everything). Honestly, I've only been dealing with these major health issues for less than a year and a half now. I take my hat off to you all who have been dealing with them virtually since infancy.

Hope this helps a little and remember have fun. Please don't overplan you guys are going to be faced with so many options that it will be hard to choose.

Shardai, thanks so much for the tips! I figured there would be a hair place somewhere around there, it's the perfect place for it, but hadn't heard of anyone talking about it before. I'm excited for that now. :thumbsup2

I want to know where we're going each day, but once we get to that park I think I can handle "winging it". The only reason I'm even thinking about reservations is because it seems to be difficult to get into most of the restaurants if you don't. I think we just need to plan a follow up trip so I don't worry about trying everything this time. :rotfl:

You guys are going to be busy! :goodvibes

Another vote for Tusker House! I actually had a ressie for them on my last schedule, but kept hearing about Boma so I was seduced. :guilty: I may just have to go back to the first thought, for the sake of simplicity. Thanks Dawn, for the tip on Casey's view!

Ann, I think the first year or so was the hardest because you are new to the whole scene. Dealing with docs, insurance, etc. Wrapping your brain around a "new normal" for your family. It will get easier, especially if Elke kicks it in the butt, right!?! I'm sorry to hear that your MIL is not doing well. That definitely makes everything harder to deal with.

I love that we'll be following each other around on several days. It'll be fun to catch glimpses of each others' day. I wrote to Kelly (now that she has her days and flights) that we all need to meet up at the Cmas party for sure! (Oh, and yes, I'll take your 9 yr old because Tessa keeps busy when she has a friend to run around with. That's the only reason I let all our neighbors come over to play. They keep her out of trouble!)

Oh, I forgot, our doc told us not to give her Dramamine or Benadryl. He suggested using ginger products, like candy. I bought some fresh, ground ginger and put it in her lemonade and she hated it. :lmao: I just found out about "Preggie Pops" that are supposed to help fight nausea in pregnant women, but apparently college kids are buying them for hangovers too. So I had my pregnant friend pick up a few for us and I'm going to try those out. I am not opposed to Benadryl, but I think driving at night after a fun day, she'll be right out anyway. I have not tried the bands, though and that is a great suggestion. Thanks!

Edited to add that Phoebe is a great traveler because she sleeps as long as she's moving. She's famous for closing her eyelids as soon as the jet engines rev. ;) Tessa may not nap at all, but if Sunday is an easy going day, I think she'll do okay Sat night.

Melissa, I guess PCOS has only been widley known about in the last few years and they still dont know to much. My doc said just take birth control pills, when I said I didnt want to do that because they make me gain weight she looked at me and said Well you can also start exercising! I was so upset, as you know exercising dosent always work.

After my update this AM, Dh woke to tell me about his dream last night. It involved Gina Davis baking cookies. Apparently one of the side effects of Chantix is "vivid" dreams. :rotfl2:[/COLOR]

You'll have to keep me updated on the chantix for my DH. We have heard about the dreams and some peole have really bad nightmares.

I think it looks good!

I think the kids will be fine for the parade portion and it will be a blast. One of the main reasons we chose to skip it is it's only on Sat. I still might be switching some things around though. If the kids are normally up late I definetley think you can squeeze it in.

No personal recommendations but I have heard Caseys is good!

I would keep it AK first and switch Boma to Tusker House so you could do lunch. Just make it simple.

Wednesday seems fine. No issues. I reserved a lunch at Biergarten, even though I haven't heard much about the food, because the atmosphere seems the most fun for the kids. I had a hard time reading it?

We arrive on Saturday, April 17th. Since we haven't been given our flight times I played around on American's website and looked at flights and connections. I'm assuming/hoping we will arrive at MCO around 5ish, and then GKTW around 6 or so. Is it nuts to think that we might head straight out to one of the parks that night?

I do think you can make the orientation at 7. They almost always have one at 7 if a family is there to attend. :)

I didn't even consider this until I saw that US last day of Mardi Gras is that day/night. I also read that some of you did not recommend kids attending this event, but as I researched a bit more, it seems that the concert area is typically the more crowded and rowdy place. This is totally your call...as only you know your kids. But this was the biggest mistake we made on Lauren's wish trip - overdoing that first night. It was actually the 2nd night (first full day) and we did the parks and then went to the MNSSHP on a whim. We had a BLAST and stayed until midnight...but then she got sick and missed 2 days of her trip (it involved a trip to the ER to get fluids, etc). Eventually it was determined to be a virus? So...maybe she would have gotten sick anyway? But that was my biggest regret on our trip...maybe pushing her too hard.

But...if I was there....Chicago?!?! That would be awesome!!! And it sounds like a blast! And you get two Universal Days (or is this a separate ticket event?)

This sounds like a good plan. You may find that you "finish" Sea World - or you may decide you want to come back later in the day. By then you will have a schedule of their shows for the day and you can decide. :)

Make sure you tell them you are wish family so that they make sure you get a ressie at the restaurant, if you want to eat there. :)

Or you could split the difference...stay home that morning (if you do US) and then go to Sea World for a bit in the afternoon and evening. Since your body clocks will be 2 hours behind (is it 2 hours? or 3?)...because 9 AM turns into 7AM (or 6AM)...so you might want to stay home that morning, do the Tea Party and then go to Sea World for the evening. You may not hit everything you want...but make sure you feed the dolphins. :)

I made Monday, MK day because there are no EMH hours to worry about and they are having Spectro and Wishes. I was able to move our res for CRT for lunch at 1pm. Dinner will be counter service I guess. Any faves to suggest?

I love a Casey's Hot Dog (they used to be even better, but are still good). Columbia Harbor House is also a draw for many. And Pecos Bill.

I'd love to have Tessa's done while we're there.

Boma is awesome and well worth scheduling around. Dinner was great. And it is an experience all it's own.

I would do DHS first...knock out everything you want to do there. Everyone will run to Toy Story as soon as the park opens...so you could so something different and avoid the crowds and then do Toy Story a little later in the day (maybe even right before you leave), because it would be less crowded with people. Or you could go to Toy Story first and have even less of a wait.

Then you could head to AK and do the things there. You may want to check the show schedule that should be posted on Steve Soares website LINK the week before you leave and you can see when you would have to leave DHS to get to AK to make sure you see whatever shows you would like to see. I highly recommend seeing BOTH Nemo and Lion King - if you can.

Then you could do a later dinner at Boma - maybe make it for 8:00 or even later? Then you could hit the last show of the day at AK (which may put you getting out of there after park closing). If you get to AK early, you can go ahead and check in for dinner and probably get seated quickly (even if early) and you will have some time to go out and check out the animals and look around AKL - which is just a beautiful resort.

Wednesday seems fine. No issues. I reserved a lunch at Biergarten, even though I haven't heard much about the food, because the atmosphere seems the most fun for the kids. We'll probably still snack anyway. :thumbsup2

Yum! It is different food...but if you like it, you will love it! And it is fun to be there. You might ask someone, though...I don't think you can get down to the bottom level, because of the wheelchair - seems like it is not accessible down to the ground (where they dance)...but that may not matter.

Thursday could be Universal, or Sea World. I think either one will allow us to return to GKTW in time for Christmas. :santa:

Perfect. :)

Friday can be the other Universal day or Sea World also. What time do you have to check out of GKTW? And what time is the rental car due? The same time you picked it up? But that means more driving back and forth, from GKTW to a park, to the airport, to the park, to GKTW and then we depart Orlando.....

Hmm...I am sure you can talk to someone to get your return time moved to a later time with no charge? Surely someone in management somewhere could make that happen for a wish family?

You will be allowed to attend the party that night, even after you check out. And you would be allowed to eat there, too, if you want. Once you check out, you are still invited back at any time!

Phew. I'm tired. :lmao:

Sounds awesome! :)

We saw the braiding places at AK. I'm another vote for Tusker House we loved it! Great food, lots of choices, good atmosphere and bonus of characters in Safari outfits if you do breakfast (there was a mix of american standards and more adventurous options for breakfast)

Phew. I'm tired. :lmao:
The tea party sounds like fun and I like another posters suggestion to take it easy in the morning if you do US the night before do the tea party and then go to Sea World in the late afternoon and evening.

WooHoo for CRT! We loved it. As for CS favorites absolutley loved Columbia Harbor House great fish and chips and really good clam chowder. I've heard Casey's changed their hotdogs and uses whole wheat buns but a part of me wishes we had tried it just because it's a classic.

Definatley try the Sea Bands. I have horrible motion sickness (okay I admit I even get nauseous standing up and starting to walk after sitting or laying down for awhile) the Sea Bands work well for me and for my Tessa :rotfl2: too.

First of all, LOVE the itenirary!!!

Arrival day: I think the orientation is actually at 7:45. I can't seem to find my GKTW Bible right now, but for some reason that time sticks in my head. If that is the case, assume conservatively that it takes you an hour (mine took nearly an hour and a half). You're done by 8:45. Arriving at US/IOA at 9:15ish and it takes you another 20 minutes (not kidding!) to walk from your vehicle to the gates. I took a quick peek at hours. The parade will at 8 or 9 (that's what the website says!), so you will have already missed it. The band plays at 8 so you would miss that as well. And, it looks like the park is only open until 10 that evening. Do you really want to use a whole day's worth of tickets for, at the most, less than an hour's worth of Mardi Gras?

Twinkle Hope's Tea Party - my BIG mistake on our trip was not making RESERVATIONS for this event. According to the GKTW volunteer, the party fills up FAST, so you may even want to consider making a reservation before you actually arrive at GKTW. When we went to go to the party, nobody was at the La Ti Da Spa (where it is held)and it was locked so either a. it was cancelled because nobody signed up or b. some parts of the party take place in other locations. Either way, we weren't getting into the party because we didn't have reservations. Sea World was a LOT of walking. Do your girls nap in the car? If so, the drive time may be a good opportunity for them to rest and recouperate. Then go to the party, and then back to Sea World. I think you definitely need more than 4 or 5 hours at Sea World though - you MUST see all the shows. They are amazing! And dont' forget about Double Dare night at GKTW. You will LOVE it and so will the girls!

What is the latest ressie time you can get for Boma? The drive time difference between AKL and AK vs. AKL and DHS is a matter of like 10 minutes or so. If you don't mind going to Hollywood inbetween your visit to Africa and your dinner in Africa, I would suggest starting your day at AK, heading over to DHS mid-afternoon, and getting a late ressie (preferably after 8:30 when DHS closes) at Boma for dinner.

Check out was at 11am for us. It was pre-printed on a form that we rec'd in our room the previous evening. However, one lady I ran into the night before said her check out time was given as 8AM! :scared1: I can't imagine why! But I would say it's safe to assume most people check out by 11.

We did a rental car switch. It was like pulling teeth to get the information from Avis as to what time it had to be returned at. We were eventually told 10:00PM so we set up our new rental for 9:00PM. DH went over after our day at the parks and after we checked into our new hotel, dropped off the MAW rental at AVIS and picked up our new one. Only one problem, it was due at 10AM. I noticed afterwards there was a $10 late fee. Funny thing is, 10AM would not have even worked if we hadn't extended our stay because we had an afternoon flight out. I felt bad and offered to pay, but our wish granted said not to worry about it. Ask AVIS when you get the car what time it has to be returned at. Ask for an extension (even if it costs $10) if the time doesn't work out for you. It's not worth spending 2 hours in the middle of the day to go swap out the rental if you ask me. I suggest your touring plan for that day be GKTW to park to airport to GKTW to wherever you are headed next.

Your plans look great!

Oh you guys are giving me some great ideas!!! I'm so glad I have you as a resource! I'm going to come back and reply to some of these ideas in a bit but first, I heard back from the Wish granter today. She left me a message that said "Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. We have some trips that are being delayed and I wanted to make sure yours wasn't one of them. (?!?!?!?) It's not. What I show is you're going from the 17th through the 24th, and you're going to extend on your own through the 30th.". Something about the way she said it made me call her right back and clarify. I was really afraid of annoying her by asking yet again to clarify, but I just had to make sure. I called her and said "Those are the dates coming from them, not me, right?" She said yes. I reminded her that we never requested the GKTW dates specifically, we requested the whole thing at once, including our extension. I told her about my "chat room" where I am getting info and ideas for the trip and that I know every chapter does things a little differently but..." she interjected, "no not really". So I explained that "I've read some people got a limo to the airport others drive themselves and that others going the same week were leaving after 6 days, not 7". She got quiet for a sec, put me on hold so she could call the office back. Came back on the line a minute or two later and said, "It's the 23rd". I wanted to laugh, then shake her a little, then laugh some more, but instead I held it together and attempted to be gracious and said "Thank you so much for TRIPLE checking". She ended the conversation saying "You're good to go, everything's booked. When it gets closer he'll give me the info". I really wanted to say, "WHEN can I have the info?????" but I decided to let it go for now. I had a feeling she was only saying that to reassure me things are okay, since she just got our dates wrong and I had to be the one to make her discover it!
