Totally random....
If anyone wants to see where I live there is a new series on
Nat Geo channel called Border Wars on Monday nights. Our neighborhood is full of people associated with the Border. We have Border Patrol Agents, Customs Officers, Air Force (the Border Patrol sector and air patrol vehicles are at Davis-Monthan AFB), several Law Enforcement agencies (all of whom deal with smugglers on a regular basis), we have a neighbor who works for Boeing or someone like that, but he designs the technology they use on the border, and even a new neighbor who works in construction told me they moved here for a new job building a permanent check point, just north of the border. It seems almost everyone here has some connection to the border. Illegal immigrants are a very common sight here. Just last weekend, while walking the girls to the park, a train went by and we saw a handful riding the train north. There is a "stash house" discovered, or a smuggler shooting, or a packed load vehicle collision on the interstate almost every week.
Well, last night the action wasn't just on the highway, or in the neighborhood, it was in our backyard!!! I hear the helicopter flying overhead. The only helicopter around here is the CBP. My friend whose DH is an agent calls me to say he just called her to say "lock the doors, stay inside, there's a pursuit in our neighborhood". As soon as I hang up the phone with her, and start locking the doors, I notice the spotlight is lighting up my backyard, across to some neighbors, back to mine, across and back, across and back. I'm getting pretty nervous at this point. I turned on the porch light and let the dog out. (She's a dobie/shephard mix and has a great bark, and also freaks out when she sees a neighbors head over the wall, so I knew she'd make plenty of noise if there was someone in or close to our yard). A few minutes later the helicopter leaves. I'm calling my neighbors and telling them to turn on porch lights also. I notice a stick in the house. This is not unusual with my 4 yr old explorer. Sticks, rocks, feathers, seeds, leaves...I want to chuck it outside but I check out the window first should there be someone hiding on my porch. No one there, but I do see a BP truck driving down my street, slowly. We live on a cul de sac so I knew that he'd be turning around and passing by again. I decided to go out and talk to him. I told him that there are some empty houses (new construction) just a couple streets over. He said they last saw the group in between my street and the one behind us, meaning they were jumping over fences and into yards. I told him I had the light on and the dog out and he said good call, and they were hoping dogs barking would lead them in. Then the kids snuck out behind me so I had to cut off the conversation to run them back inside. I don't know if they caught anyone or not. It made me pretty nervous because, as I mentioned, we are all used to seeing illegals walking through. If it were just a couple of people I don't think they would have called for air support. They were either packers (drug mules, usually armed) or they were coyotes (human smugglers, also armed) leading a very large group. The illegals don't worry too much about being caught because they are voluntarily returned to Mexico and they just try again the next day. The smugglers have more to lose, especially if they have previous records, which they often do. Phoebe's helper was here last night so I walked her out to her car when she left but by that point it was quiet. I am going to call a couple of people today to try and find out what they were after and if they got caught.
So, yeah. Look for my dog on next week's episode of Border Wars on Nat Geo.
