Feeling alittle down tonight. My DH's unemployment ends in 1 week, unless the government passes it in the 11th hour, due to chronic back issues he can't do most jobs out there and would not pass a drug screening because of the meds his pain management doctor has him on. I start my 3rd job(yes that is 3 jobs) next week and still can't pay my credit cards and taxes along with everything else. So far this year I received 2 paycuts, can't have OT, my health insurance is going to double and all of my utilities have gone up, and we get a whopping $23 a week for child support!
DH is applying for permanent disability on the advice of his doctors but that could take months to get that approved. I guess tomorrow I will call all of my credit card companies and tell them I will not pay for a few months until I know how my finances are, I would rather have cash available at this point then care about my credit rating(which stinks anyway)!
Any advice? I am hoping to sell my treadmill this week and I'm looking for other things to sell, but we don't have much.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Drug screenings don't look for prescription painkillers and if your husband mentioned he was on a specific prescription that would be discounted anyway. Tell him to take any job he can get and worry about the pain later, it may turn out to be not as bad as he fears. You won't know until you try but if you disqualify something in advance you are setting yourselves up for disaster.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I hope things improve for you and your husband soon. It is really tough out there right now for so many of us. I have been looking for a job now for 6 months. Just keep your chin up and take care of the most important things first. Here's a hug for you

I'm glad he is applying for the disability, that is a big step. Try to keep your hopes up, it is probably the best you can do.

To the PP who commented about drug screenings, a lot of medications given for chronic back pain are narcotics, and they do show up on drug screens. While jobs can be applied for, even if you tell them what you are taking- do you hire the guy who tests positive against the other 30 applicants you have who don't?

Best Wishes for a better New Year!!!

Prayers for your family. I know all too well what you are going through.
My you find a bit of comfort knowing you are not alone.

Prayers for your family.

Maybe the oldest two could find part time jobs to help out?

if you have a doctors note, there is no issue. I have a lady that works for me that ran into the same issue, with a large well known corporation.. she won a law suit in the low 6 figure range over a very similar issue.

He would have a prescription so that would let it pass in the drug screen, the problem is who is going to hire someone that already has back problems? That is just a liablity to any company, especially when they have 100 other applicants who DON'T have back problems. Besides, if the dr. says he cannot work and doesn't release him, no company can legally put him to work.

OP, I will be sending prayers your way. All you can do is make it day by day and get by the best you can. Don't worry about paying anything you don't have to until you know you have the money you need to live on right now. Your credit will stink, but having food and heat are what's most important right now.

Hopefully the disability process will move a little faster for you. It is a long and drawn out process but will be worth it in the end. Good luck to you.

i;m not trying to be a smart alec, but how does someone who works 3 jobs , and have 5 kids, have time to post or read a msg board?

So what were you trying to be?

OP, I will add you and your family to my prayers. Stay strong and do your best. They keep saying that the economy is turning a corner. Better days are just ahead of us.

I think everyone has the time for a break now and again, why not give her one!

OP, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

The medical review officer who recieves the positive screen, calls the applicant and pharmacy to verify validity of script. As the employer, I never even know that there was that communication unless the applicant tells me. I do not believe the drug screen comes into play in the hiring process unless you test positive for an illegally obtained drug.

Pain meds aren't a problem - he just needs to show his prescriptions..:)

SS disability? If so, tell him to contact a lawyer that specializes in that field.. He could have it in as little as 3 months if he qualifies.. Otherwise he'll probably be denied the first time and it could take 18 months or more to get approved without an attorney..

Are any of your children old enough to get jobs - or do anything like babysitting; yard work/snow shoveling; walking dogs; or anything like that? If so, I'm sure they would be happy to help out - having to watch their mom work 3 jobs..:(

Hugs and prayers to you.. Hopefully things will be looking brighter by this time next year..

Sitting here feeling the same way. Paid the mortgage and just wondering how the other bills will get paid and how we will make Christmas happen for our five kids. I have been really bummed today. can you call credit card companies and negotiate? Our house is eating us alive. So I am sending hugs your way because I know how you feel. :(

Maybe it's their day off. Maybe she is so stressed she can't sleep. Maybe she was at work on a break. While I only have one kid and am a single mom (no sick dh to add to the mix like OP) I have been in a position of having 4 jobs at one time. You'd be surprised that no matter how tired you are, you lie there in bed thinking and get no sleep and what to do? Go DIS. :) Sometimes distraction is the best medicine.

 OP, hope things turn around.

As for selling, try craigslist. Since it is free to list, just throw anything and everything up there, even if you think nobody would buy. You'd be surprised what some people buy!

Over the years I've found that there are 2 basic personality types when it comes to problem solving:

1. How can I get this done?

2. I can't do this because...

The type 1 crawls over broken glass to do whatever needs to be done. He may fail over and over but each failure leads him to get up and try something else. The type 2 just waits for some miracle to bail him out, a miracle that usually never comes.

I'll leave it to you to decide which type you'd rather have around when times get tough.
