Post Racial President?

I don't have a problem I can quit whenever I want. I just don't want to.

Psssst. It's me you're talkin' to.

I've been round the block with you a few times.

That's why we butt heads.

That and because your arguments are ridiculous. :snooty:

;)

Nope it was pointing out that in one case the Liberal side is demanding a strict dictionary definition to support one agruement, but wish to avoid a strict dictionary definition in the other arguement.

Liberals are better at critical thought, they comprehend complex concepts. :thumbsup2

Being a racist has nothing to do with acknowledging that some of us are a different color than others. It has everything to do with acknowledging that we are all just as capable, and just as deserving of a good life.

I'm white and I think that part of his speach was still true. I know many people (and unfortunately I am related to some of them) who wouldn't vote for Obama simply because of the color of his skin. Shutting your eyes and not talking about it won't make it go away. And if we can talk about it, and indeed maybe laugh about it, that can only be a good thing.
There are also people who won't vote for a woman- or vote for someone who might be in a wheelchair- or vote for a gay man or woman- or vote for a Jew or vote for a Catholic- or vote for a Christian- or vote for a muslim- or vote for someone too young- or vote for someone elderly- or vote for someone divorced- or vote for someone who never married- or vote for someone who owns cats- or vote for someone who was married to my mother's brother's best friend's uncle's dog. The list goes on and on. Today we overcame a MAJOR barrier. If a black man, who was born to a single young Mother can become the President.... ANYTHING is possible for ANYONE. It is about the choices that we all make in our lives every day. We are by no means PERFECT but we as a country are heading in the right direction and at a great speed. I remember having to crawl under a big ugly fence dividing our housing development from the one next door. I wanted to play with the kids I heard over there- I couldn't understand why the big fence- it was to separate black and white. This was the early 70's.

I think the speech (at least that part of it- I didn't hear the whole thing) was in poor taste. This WHITE embraces RIGHT and is proud of it!

Now here are words from Springsteen (one of my FAVORITE Favorite singers!) To those that may not know, he uses the words "yellow man", now of course, meant no disrespect, actually the opposite. Luv him!

Bruce Springsteen Born In The U.S.A. Lyrics
Songwriters: N/A

Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering upBorn in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Got in a little hometown jam so they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land to go and kill the yellow man

Born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says "son if it was up to me"
Went down to see my V.A. man
He said "son don't you understand now"
Had a brother at Khe Sahn fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there he's all gone
He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now
Down in the shadow of penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go
Born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I'm a long gone daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I'm a cool rocking daddy in the U.S.A.

Your question hardly deserves the response I'm giving it now, loco.

Be real. Look around.

You shouldn't have to look very far to find those in our country that are persecuted against.

Some of us stare ya' in the face every day.

Sorry, that's too vague. This deserves a direct answer with some specific laws cited. Who in this country does not have the same rights as others in this country?

So they get to pick and choose when one most follow a definintion and when they don't have to?

In the words of one of your bretheren you can't make this stuff up.

Actually, you're mistaken. Springsteen's reference was indeed specifically intended to project the manner in which that term was used in a derogatory manner in late 1960's/early 1970's.

he uses that phrase because during that period of time (Vietnam) the "country" (at least some) called them (the Vietnamese as well as other Asians) that in a derogatory manner.

Give it a rest already, your looking quite silly.

It's only vague if you refuse to SEE loco. Open your eyes.

Actually at that point in time, it would have been one of the nicer comments.

Uh-huh. Me. Silly. Someone throws out some ridiculous hyperbole about some Americans having fewer rights than other Americans, and then can't back it up with any actual facts, and I need to give it a rest. I guess that's some of that liberal complex critical thinking I was reading about in this thread.

Words are bad if they are intended bad. Thats the point. The Reverand is from a different era. His words and speech, although I did not specifically love them, were his way of expressing his experience. Springsteen's use of the word was not intended badly, that was my point. Neither were the Reverand's use of the words, I don't believe so, I didn't get that at all, whether in good taste or not, you have to look into his experience.

Although I think President Obama said many important thing in his speech these words really struck me.

"On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things."

Get over it, Dawn

Of course but he is sticking up for the people he calls the "yellow man" that we termed as such. Do you think that the Reverand meant his words in a derogatory manner? I don't believe so, whether in good taste or not.

"Help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate. On the side of inclusion, not exclusion. Tolerance not intolerance. And as we leave this mountain-top, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Help us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our temples, our mosques, wherever we seek your will. Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle, look over our little angelic Sasha and Melia. We go now to walk together children, pledging that we won't get weary..in the difficult days ahead. We know that you will not leave us alone. With your hands of power and your heart of love. Help us then now Lord to work for that day where nations will shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, where every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid. When justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream. Lord, in memory of all the saints who from their labors rest and from the joy of a new beginning."

"We ask for you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead man, and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who will do justice and love mercy will do what is right...say Amen...say Amen...and Amen."

I felt that the context of the benediction was right on and I took it in humor. Everyone needs to quit nick picking. The problem is looking for something to complain about.

There's the context and a majority of the benediction...yeah...really racist and horrible man. Give me a break!

Good gosh almighty, he's referring to gay rights, women's rights, race rights, you think this isn't happening in America? Geeez, what just happened in California with gays wanting to marry, you gotta be kidding.
