Port Orleans Riverside Q&A Thread 2013, Part One [Thread now FULL and closed]

but can you give me an approximate timing for transportation to and from different parks?

Between about 10 and 20 minutes actual bus-ride time (Epcot is shortest, AK the longest). But there are a lot of other variables too - such as whether you first go round all the stops at POR (and maybe even POFQ too), whether the first bus is too full and you have to wait for the next one, walking time to and from the bus stops, etc.

A good rule is to allow at least an hour if you've got a specific time you need to be there for (although it is almost always shorter).

But as has already been said, there's really not much point spending 40+ minutes getting to a counter service meal (only), then another 40+ minutes back again, when there are plenty of counter service places in all the parks anyway...

Ok we actually prefer to drive to and from the parks....huge stroller, small kidoos and too much stuff to haul on and off the bus lol! We are staying in a garden view royal room. Is there a building/room anyone can suggest that is close to the parking lot? DH prefers the second floor so I'm not sure if there are rooms near stairs and the parking lot maybe! We don't need an elevator just quick to and from access to the car:)

I cannot for the life of me get online check-in to work. I keep getting an error message with Goofy after I've entered everything in. I'm trying to use a Disney Visa if that makes a difference. 29days and counting and I'd like to do online check-in. Any tips???

I had the same problem. It may have been because I signed up for the Disney Visa at the same time I tried to so the online check-in. It worked done when I used a different card.

What are the benefits to online check-in? I'm trying to decide whether or not to do it.

I probably won't fax any requests. My mom and I talked about it and decided it'll be more fun to be surprised. We're going on this trip for mother-daughter bonding time after a rough couple of years, so we don't think it matters where we end up, we're just thrilled to be going. Does this make a difference as to whether or not online check-in is worth it, not having any requests?

This post covers most of the benefits, and if you are not putting in any requests anyway then I really can't really see any reason why not to use it if you can:

Yes, it's worthwhile doing. You can't enter any 'free-form' text requests into the form, just a couple of basic tickboxes, but your requests should ideally have been added in advance to your main booking so that won't really make any difference. After you have done online checkin, you are still free to send a fax 3-5 days out if you wish - if anything having done online checkin might help them, as they'll also be able to see your arrival details, etc.

The main benefits are: you can register your credit card and create a PIN number for all your key-to-the-world cards in advance; nothing to take up time at the front desk (your welcome pack, key-cards and room number will be put together a few hours before your stated arrival time, so it's all there waiting for you even if you are checking in quite late); when MagicBands are introduced, they will have been pre-made for you in your chosen colours and with your names on (otherwise you'll get generic grey ones set up at the front desk); you might even get 'Mobile Lobby' checkin service, where they can check you in using an iPad, rather than even needing to queue for the desk at all. The room assignment team suggest it too by the way, they say it generally speeds the whole process up for you.

The only downside I've heard anyone say is what happens if your requests have not been met and you want to change from the room you have been assigned? Well if that happens you're only in exactly the same situation as if you'd queued up for normal checkin anyway, you can still ask if there are any other options available and they can move you if one is found. And with the new RFID keycards they probably won't even need to print you new cards, they'll just re-assign the ones you've already been given.

So all-in-all, I can't really see any good reasons why not to do it. There are lots of pluses, and no real negatives that I can see.

ugh.....tried changing the credit card and it STILL will not allow me to do online check-in. Not sure why......

The Easter Sunday and April 2013 Recreation Activities and Movie Schedules for Port Orleans Riverside are now available. See the main Recreation Activities Schedule page on portorleans.org for full-size PDF versions, or click on the images below.

Easter Sunday

If you don't fancy spending all of Easter Sunday in the crowded theme parks (and they will be crowded!) there are plenty of activities around both of the Port Orleans resorts to keep you and the kids occupied, including character meet-and-greets, family games and poolside fun, and of course some traditional confectionery-based activities.

Also, both of the resort gift shops (Fulton's General Store at Port Orleans Riverside and Jackson Square Gifts & Desires at Port Orleans French Quarter) are again offering pre-made and made-to-order Easter Baskets from Tuesday 26 March until Easter Sunday.

Walt Disney World will also be hosting special religious services in the Fantasia Ballroom at Disney's Contemporary Resort Convention Center. Guests will need to use Disney Transportation (rather than trying to park at the Contemporary) to get to the services, which are at the following times:
  • Catholic Mass: 8am-9am
  • Protestant Service: 9am-10am
  • Catholic Mass: 10:15am-11:15am

April 2013

For April, the outdoor movies will start at 8:30pm and the daily campfires commence at 6:30pm.

Also, don't miss the special Earth Day activities: Vote in a Recycle and Photo Contest in the Lobby at POR on Thursday 18 April (8am-5pm). Then join in with the Earth Day Celebrations from noon-2pm on Friday 19 April beside the POR Marina. Recycle and Photo Contest winners will be announced at the Earth Day Celebration.

No, the only option now is the fold-down beds in the Alligator Bayou rooms, there is nothing extra available in the other sections or in POFQ. You could always bring your own air mattress though.

Andre, I know you are the expert, so this may be a one time thing, but my next door neighbors are a family of 5. They were expecting to stay in AB during their Christmas trip, but when they checked in, they were told that AB was full, and they were given a room in the Mansions with a rollaway.

This may not be something that's offered, but they must use this option in some circumstances.

I know they kept a few rollaways back in case of emergencies or overbookings, but the intention was they would be completely phased out for general use some time after the conversion to queen beds was completed mid-2012. I wouldn't be surprised if they still have a few lurking around somewhere though, they are just not offered under normal circumstances any more.

I knew you would know specifics. :)

Oh and if you book with AAA you get story time at Epcot too! It was with jasmine when we were there in December and they sit right with her! It was a neat extra!

This is again is ONLY with dining... Very frustrating
You now don't get Anything unless you have a DDP!!!!

Thanks Andre! I'll wait until my new credit card comes (my current one expires in the middle of our trip so that'd be bad) and then check in :goodvibes

Nope, sorry, the wired connections were disabled when wi-fi was introduced. The wi-fi isn't too bad though, I got a pretty reliable 3 Mbps
Andre

Thanks! I'll have to keep my fingers crossed i guess. Or just use my plan data if I have to... once he leaves I'll have a full GB a month to use all by myself. lol!!

We are used to staying at DVC resorts in a studio or 1 bedroom villa but we are trying a few nights at POR in a Royal Room with a River View. How are the queen beds? Comfy? Plush? Firm? Any opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

I have searched this thread for info, but I can't find anything. I know you can get bedrails, and I saw a few posts on that, but do they work on the murphy bed?? It looks like the mattress doesn't lay on a flat bottom...looks like a little lip to keep it in place. Just wondering if anyone has tried the rails on the little bed.....my son will fit fine on there, but he rolls around A LOT at night and I'm worried about him falling off the side.

On that same note....is there room to put the chairs (back to) along the side of the murphy bed to act as a sort of rail for him? Just can't tell by the pictures if there is enough room for the chairs to fit between the end of the queen beds and the side of the murphy bed. They would have to be back to because it looks like the arms of the chairs won't fit under the murphy bed.

Hey all. We check in less than 2 weeks from now. Question is.... What are POR experts' thoughts on online check-in? Does it really expedite the process?
