Pop Warner Fight?

We were at MK Saturday and was wondering why strollers were over the fence! That was the busiest day I've ever had at MK and it was horrible! Never again!! :sad2:

My brother-in-law is a cheerleading coach and was there this weekend for PW. He said that he could not believe how disrespectful some of the teams, players, managers & parents were. He's been coach for 10 years and he said each year it gets worse. He wants disney to kick them out. First, his selfishness, as all cheerleading competitions lead to disney and he is sick of going there and Second, he doesn't think that PW can manage the resposiblity of vacationing in a family spot anymore. The cost has gotten out of hand for many of the athletes and their families, so only the athlete will come, and without proper adult supervision, thing get hairy.

Ah yes, another reason to avoid Pop Warner. Hopefully if enough people complain to guest services about this (and it occurs year after year), they will stop doing Pop Warner at the resorts.

I avoid that week like the plague.

"Disney has hosted the competition since 1997, under a contract with Pop Warner that expires in 2010. All competitors must stay at a Disney hotel, even if it can stay more cheaply elsewhere."

Looks like three more years !

Wow, I didn't even realize this had happened! I'm glad we went to the Disney-MGM Studios on Sat. instead. Good to know for future reference.

I'd be amazed if Disney doesn't have a clause that allows them to opt out of the contract for specified reasons.

Will be interesting to see if Disney sticks it out, or whether they decide it's just not worth the bad publicity.

It is like little league baseball for football leagues. And the Championships are held at WDW each december. BTW welcome to the Dis Annie. Happy posting!

Thank you so much! I thought I might as well start out with stupid questions so that it doesn't confuse anyone later on. Get to know the real me! ;)

I do really really feel bad for the younger siblings of the PW players... Having to be woken up in the middle of the night and told to leave Disney...

Very very sad for them.

Sorry to be so stupid but what is Pop Warner?

"Pop Warner Little Scholars (also known as Pop Warner, Pop Warner Conference, and Junior Football Conference) is a non-profit organization that provides youth American football, cheerleading & dance programs for participants in 41 U.S. states and several countries around the world. Consisting of approximately 360,000 young people ranging from ages 5 to 16 years old, Pop Warner is the largest national youth football, cheer and dance organization in the United States."

Involves football and cheers. It has been the source of many discussions because of the behaviors exhibited by some at WDW each year during their "Super Bowl" in December. Some of us who have had some interaction with them in our communities have seen this same behavior at home, and wonder why Disney would want to continue this relationship. As with any sport, a few can ruin it for all :sad2:. But when they are at Disney, they interfere with other's vacations (some of a lifetime) and that is a real shame.

We just got back Sunday from a stay at POR and saw a number of cheerleaders around the property, in the food court, on the busses, as well as hordes of them in the parks. For what it is worth, I didn't see any of them acting improperly.....except for the group that was doing cheers on the TTA on Wednesday night, more of an annoyance than anything.

If even half of what I am reading is true, Disney needs to rethink this contract they have. No one should have to witness such crass, rude and dangerous behaviour on their vacations. Pop Warner should be holding their teams accountable too - perhaps suspending them from play the next year, if things get so bad. It wouldn't take long for people to get the message that behavior like this won't be tolerated.

This was one week i crossed off my list of possible vacation times. I did not want to put up with a bunch of undercaperoned kids who thought they owned the park becuase they were attending an event at Disney.

I am happy to know i made the right choice.

I have discussed with my kids over and over the privilage of going to Disney and that it took mom and dad alot of saving and planning to provide this experiance for them. They are expected to behave like civilized human beings not baboones escaped from the zoo!

I do feel sorry for the babies who were woken in the middle of the night and kicked out of Disney but I feel Disney did what they had to do. If they do not make a firm stand against such behavior it will only get worse thus cuaseing them more lose of business. Who wants to take their 4 and 5 year olds to Disney when Gang fights are breaking out all over. Disney must maintain a safe and fun reputation to continue getting Families to visit. Kicking 3 teams out will earn them much more business then if they had given the offenders another "chance".

WOW! This was our first time during Pop, and aside from the 4 tiny little cheerleaders exiting Space Mtn. sitting on the handrails of the conveyer thing, I didn't really notice too much inappropriate behavior. (of course if I sat up there, it would probably shut the thing down). We were in early every night for a change, since we had our baby with us.

I agree, Disney did the right thing, but in this day and age, it seems like the attitude of parents and, of course, their kids, is that if we didn't win "we got ripped" rather than "the other team played better." Likewise, my kid got in a fight, but there should be no consequenses because we have other children who might be inconvenienced. Those parents should realize that their big kids could have done a lot worse to someone else's precious little ones that wake them up by fighting in a very crowded place. One big football player steps on, lands on, etc. . .a one, two, three or even 10 year old and a lot of damage could have been done. That is not even counting the psychological damage of seeing a brawl on Main Street. My little one is too young to know, but I have friends with older kids who would NEVER want to go back if they saw a mob scene at Disney World.

I doubt Disney would cancel the contract before 2010 (what do I know, really) but since it sounds like these things are escalating, maybe they will consider not renewing.

I think Disney has the right policy and I think it did the right thing in "asking" all guests in the party to leave. However, if I was among that party and my kid did nothing wrong, I would stay in the my room and refuse to leave until the next morning. I'm no lawyer but I think their are certian rights that a guest has and certian obligations that a host has to their guests when they are paid to board the guest.

Read the fine print of the little plackard on the back of your hotel room doors next time. I think this plackard outlines these rights.

Until a Sherrif or Police officer asks me to leave my paid room, I will stay in the room -- until it's convienient for me to leave (like the next morning).

I'm not advocating forceful rebellion or anarchy, but I do advocate standing up for your rights.

Our first encounter with Pop Warner was in 2004 staying at the values. It was horrible then, and from reading over the years it appears to have a negative increase.

I wrote a letter to Pop Warner about our encounter with their organization. Are you surprised I didn't receive any reply?

Write your letters to the organization as well. Let them know what a negative impact they leave behind.

I've never heard of this Pop Warner at all, but shouldn't part of the responsibilty lay with their league as well?

I do agree though that Disney should reconsider their contract with them though. I mean it is bad enough to have the fighting happening, but at least they get thrown out for that...what about the kids that curse like sailors in front of all the little children though?

I have no doubts that if my kids don't swear now that they will in the future, and I have told them this...all I ever ask of them is to never curse to an adult and to never swear when there are little children around. I have even seen them talk to other kids and tell them not to swear because of the little kids around.

I, for one, applaud WDW for them kicking the people out that were tied to the teams that were in the fight. While I do feel bad for the families that had nothing to do with what happened and feel bad for the younger children of the families getting the boot that is a risk that they took when they agreed to go with the team. I hope that the teams follow up with their own punishments to the team members that were involved in the fight.

We've been during Pop Warner before and while we didn't witness any real disrubtive behavior we did see a lot of loud groups of kids that would rather run you over than step out of your way even when you were already stepping out of the way and language that would have been more appropriate in a bar. It isn't a week I want to go with my young children because of those reasons.

Not a stupid question - I've been on the dis for a while, and just got back from Disney right before this event and I wasn't sure either - I thought it was cheerleading competition myself!
