Can someone give me a break down of these two areas. Are they within walking distance? I understand there is only one sit down restaurant, and that they share buses..Is it really just two sides to the same resort?

They are not two sides to one resort, at least that was not the impression I got from POFQ. FQ is about half the size and was rather quiet. I didn't spend any time at RS so I can't judge the resort itself for its restfulness.

The buses that do share between the two resorts will usually pick up and drop off at FQ first. If you have stayed at CBR taking the bus from FQ and around RS is almost like the bus ride around CBR, IMHO. Now just note not all bus routes are shared, plus there is also the boats to DTD those are not shared either, at least they weren't for us. I wish I would have noted which buses were shared and not shared, but maybe someone else may have that info.

you can walk easily between the two resorts or take a surrey as well. We didn't get to spend much time at the resort during our last trip so we plan on doing that more next time.

Both are on the Same Resort Map.
They are both part of the PO Resort but are also seperate.
Whenever you book a stay you have to say what side of the
resort either, Riverside or FQ.
The Main Restaurant in located in Riverside section and it's called
Boatwrights (we love eating breakfast there before boarding ME
back to the airport). Make sure you make ADR there if you would
like to eat there because it seems to be popular.
There is a Boat ride to DTD that is sometimes shared between
Riiverside and FQ--Riverside is loaded first and if the boat is not
filled they will make a stop at FQ finishing filling before heading to
DTD--oh and they also have to stop to let guest who want to visit
FQ get off.
The CS Restaurant at RS is much bigger and with more varity
and better food than at FQ--Love the "Create your own Pasta".
FQ decor is based on the real New Orleans FQ and RS has 2 different
themes, one is like the Plaintain Homes (the Mansions) and the other
is like Bayou Home (Alligator Bayou--Very rustic theme).
We've stayed at both and we liked Riverside Mansions section
better because I liked the Landscaping and Architecture more.
That's just my personal preferance because FQ was very pretty also-
I thought the iron railings were very Nice.
We stayed at FQ in Sept. and an empty bus would pick us up
heading to the parks and most of the time it would fill up with
guest from FQ so we never heading to RS, just straight to the park.
When we headed back to the resort the bus would stop at FQ 1st.

I see you've stayed at all the Moderates. Do you have a favorite?

Both are quite nice.

POR has several pools, one in each section and then Ol Man Island, main pool are with MUCH more activities for kids
FQ has one pool that everyone uses (you can go to any pool, pofq OR por at your will), which is not common elsewhere between resorts.

Only sit down restaurant is at POR.

LARGER and better (IMHO) food court.

Piano man Bob is at POR (you MUST see if you go with kids)

Both have game rooms, but POR also has varying boat rentals.

POR is MUCH bigger than FQ, so if you are looking for "smaller" and more quiet, perhaps fq would be better, I think it is more "adultish" though POR is quieter in mansion area (where there are King beds that can be requested.

Wherever you choose, Request the building you think you would like (close to food court, close to a bus stop, far away from everything??) and though not guaranteed they really do try and accommodate you.
Best of luck wherever you stay.

POR is our HOME away from HOME, we just LOVE LOVE LOVE it! :lovestruc

As of right now our Favorite is POR--the Mansion section.
I grew up in Louisiana and go back to visit once a year
and POR reminds me of home. We also go down to the New Orleans
FQ and eat the Beignets--the ones at POFQ don't taste anything like them--they are too yeasty and tough.
I used to be a tour guide for
one of the Plantation Homes on the River. Growing up I lived
next to a Bayou so the AB section is not as fascinating to me.
We haven't yet stayed at CBR but are looking forward to it.
We booked the New Pirate Room which is coming out next year.
Who knows CBR may become our favorite.
POR is the one MOD that we will definately return to on a future trip.

While technically it is one resort, it is really two. In comparing the two, POR has more of everything - a bigger more varied food court, a bigger and better store, boat and bike rentals including the surrey rentals, a sit down restaurant, more pools - yet we prefer POFQ. POFQ is smaller and the rooms are more conveniently located to the main areas. Both have good playgrounds though the one at POR is brand new.

The rooms are the same other than the decorations - I found my room in the mansion district to be comparable in style to the POFQ. Alligator Bayou has more rustic, and very charming decorations. We had requested AB but got a room in the mansions. I ended up thinking the mansion room was nicer - though the location wasn't great.

At POR, I feel like my enjoyment depends on room location and weather - because in bad weather, its a hike to the food court etc. In good weather, even though its a walk we mind as much because the grounds are so scenic. At POFQ, I like being closer. Both have good evening entertainment - again I prefer the scat lounge at POFQ but that's just my personal preference - both have huge followings and are very popular.

You can certainly walk back and forth between the two - its about a 5-10 minute walk depending on what part of the resort you started at and they have the boats going back and forth between the two. In good weather, the walk is scenic and fun. This summer, we had a few evenings with good weather and we must have walked for almost an hour through Riverside with the baby sleeping in the stroller. The grounds are beautiful and walking around at night with the gas lamps lit and the horse and carriages clip clopping by was just wonderful.

You'll enjoy no matter which resort you pick - I think that both POFQ and POR are a great value and offer a huge amount of amenities and opportunities for enjoyment especially considering the moderate price.
