I wouldn't think that this is possible. It is to be used for the school, not to increase salaries. My personal opinion is that it is for the kids, teachers can benefit by an event/school gift. Increase in salary requires taxes etc. As a parent, I would not be behind this. As a former PTO treasurer, I would never be brave enough to even speak of it publically unless, I reviewed all tax laws, bylaws etc. In addition, as you are always struggling and fundraising, why would you even consider gifting it. I understand that you want to help others, and that is amazing, I just don't think this is the correct avenue to take.

I don't think you can give the money to the teachers for personal use simply because there are all kinds of tax implications to this. Not least of which is because it would be considered a bonus they'd end up loosing half of it to the US government.

You'd be better off offering it to the teachers to use at their discretion to use for classroom use. Or ask them if there is a special program they'd like to fund. For example, our school has a trust that the teachers can use to do all kinds of crazy fun educational programs that they wouldn't be able to do otherwise, like bringing in naturalists (a lady who rescues owls) or making custom books with the kids or a special training course in balancing kids' classroom days with movement that a couple of the teachers took - the kids in their classes now have a 10 minute yoga break several times a day - which they love.

I really don't want to be a downer but that money needs to be spent on the students. I work at an elementary and am involved with our PTO for many years. That is the first rule of any money that comes in is that it must be spent in ways that would impact the majority of the students.I am sure that even though teachers struggle, a great teacher would refuse to take that money away from the kids. Please think about your decision, I know you mean well.

Also, another thought I had since my last post, I think posing this question is going to put the parents on the spot. Many would not like it however; may not be willing to verbally speak it at the meeting. So, afterwards, the hornet's nest will open and you will hear the backlash. Have you considered how the teachers would feel that you are publically putting there financial struggles out to the quorum?

I have to agree with the above. I am pretty sure the contest was intended to be used for the school/students not for "bonuses" for the teachers. I know you have good intentions with wanting to give it to the teachers but think you might want to find a different way to thank them.

Just a quick thought to the very valid points brought up about the tax implications, airing financial worries etc. What if you gifted 1/4 of the $ to each teachers "classroom"? I'm guessing that they spend quite a bit of their own $$ for their classroom use. Then each teacher could choose how he or she wanted to spend the $$ to best benefit their own classroom.

Just a thought.

I don't think I would have even considered the points people brought up so it's probably good that you posted to the Dis with your idea. That way you will at least be aware of potential arguments/problems when you talk to the board. Is there a person on the board that you trust and feel comfortable with who you could run your idea by before the meeting?

Regardless of the issues that might come up, Congratulations for getting such a great prize for your school, for all your hard work, and for your generosity towards and awareness of the struggles of the teachers in your child's school.
