I just placed an online order from Pizza Hut and I'm curious about this delivery fee... is this given to the driver or is this kept by the store, etc. I'm just wondering if this would be considered as part of the tip or not. We always tip the pizza delivery person but I've never seen this "fee" before.

Glad you asked, because I wonder too. I notice there is a 75 cent delivery fee. I always wonder who gets that.

I can answer as to what Domino's does. I am a driver for Domino's, they charge their customer's a $1.00 delivery fee. I get $.65 of that $1.00. Why Dominos feels the need to keep 1/3 of the fee is a mystery to me. :confused3

Also, the you shouldn't use the delivery charge to figure out a tip, the $.65 per customer I get is considered mileage. With the price of gas these days, I need every cent of it for my gas tank. :teeth:

I was sort of figuring this is a "mileage" thing. I've heard a lot of stories of pizza delivery drivers getting stiffed by people out of tips, so I figured that the fee was one way to ensure that, at least, their gas got covered.

A couple of weeks ago, I ordered 6 pizzas for my DD's Birthday party and they charged me a $5 delivery fee. I think they probably do that just "in case" you don't tip the driver??
Of course, I gave him a tip too.
I had never heard of that before though.

There are some places around me that do not give the driver ANY of the fee. Always base a tip on what you would give if there was no delivery fee. Keep in mind that most drivers are paying for their own gas!

I'm so excited-this is something I KNOW the answer to!!! My son delivers for Pizza Hut-and yes he gets the 75 cent delivery charge-but he also relies on his tips-his hourly wage is lower than mimimum and the 75 cents offsets him using his car, paying the insurance, etc. This is in Rochester,NY-he's in college at RIT-don't know if this is how all Pizza Huts do it-but his does.HTH

Around here, there has always been a delivery fee. I always considered it to be a *fuel* fee, but for the convenience of not having to go and chase after it I gladly accept the fee and give the driver a tip!

WOW.......I would have thought they would make at least minimum wage. I will have to up my tip amount!! ;)

Ok, I'm curious about the tip. How much do you tip the driver? And, do you base it on the total bill or the number of pizzas?

It seems like tipping is almost as private an issue as personal income and I always feel insecure that I'm either way over or way under the average. Not that I want to be "average", but I'd like to base my decision on whether the service is below or above average and how can I do that without knowing what "average" is??? :confused3:

We usually tip $3-4 for a normal delivary. My DH use to deliver and that was his average tip. Now if it is a huge order, I would tip more and even give some to the person who had to make all of them.

Usually I tip about $3 for 2 pizzas. Last night my bill was $31 for 3 pizzas and I tipped $4. I really don't know if that's average or not. Would be interested in what others tip.

That I can't answer- I know he does reasonably well on his tips-I'll have to ask him an average..I would assume it would be based on how quick they got it there(which wouldn't necessarily be up to him) and how pleasant he was(he is..very..but I'm biased..lol) I'll ask him and let you know!!

ETA-he said he averages 2-3 dollars per delivery-I asked if it was "about " a dollar a pie -and he said there's no rhyme or reason to it-but he doesn't consider anything less than $2.00 a "tip"..lol

I tip around %10-%15 which comes out to about 1-1.50 each, it all depends on the service, how polite the person was on the phone, etc.. if my order is right... sometimes I tip way more, just depends. I felt so bad today because I ordered garlic sauce and it didn't come, but I just forgot about it, didn't call or anything, well 1/2 hour later another delivery guy comes to the door with two dipping sauces and apologises for forgetting them... I thought they went above and beyond and I had no cash for a tip, next time I order someone is getting double.
