What are the pills called (something that starts medel.....)for motion sickness? People said that they like it better than dramanine? I tried to do the search on it but it was disabled.

And where have you found it?
Has anyone had luck with vertigo?

My Neighbor uses Dramamine for motion sickness. Not sure if this is what you're looking for.

Thanks but people talked of it about a month or so ago. You take it the night before your trip. Josh I should have written it down.

Meclezine (Antivert)?

:crazy2: Me without it. Watch your dosage! My doc prescribed the higher (25 mg.) for me as I'm 'young and healthy'. Made me extremely nausous...worse than motion sickness! I just cut them in half (they also come in a 12 mg dose, which doc gives to 'older patients...she said people in their 80's) and I'm fine. Can ride anything!

Is this a prescription required thing then? For some reason I thought they said that they got it at like Walgreens in a huge bottle.

I swear I can't remember anything.:o

Yes, Meclezine does require a prescript. Costs me less (with insurance) than the over-the-counter stuff. And, I too remember that thread and someone mentioning the big bottle. Hmmm...my memory must be going too  .

I just called my doc's and had them call in the script for me. It works for me and I'm afraid to try anything else in case it doesn't :crazy2: .

Thanks so much!! I know what you mean about changing things and it not working. Dramanine works great for me so I am leary of switching. My sis in law is coming with and she has vertigo so bad and I am worried that it will dampen her trip so I was trying to find something for her.

I will pick up some Bonine for her and she can give it a try.

PLUS I WANTED TO SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! (I saw it in your sig)

I *think* Dramamine also comes in an anti-nausea formula now - though I don't know how affective it is. Meclizine definitely will cause sleepiness, too - so you might not want to take anything *at* Disney until you know how it affects you at home. Nothing worse than being sick for a whole day.

WELL I"LL BE DARNED!!!

I just went to the pfizer website (www.dramamine.com links you to it) and guess what? The less-drowsy formula of Dramamine IS meclizine!! Who knew!? :)

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Actual day is December 1. At noon on Dec. 1 I'll be eating lunch at 'The Castle' and DD5 is so excited! The whole vacation , Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove, all of Disney, Arabian Nights, and flying instead of driving is my BIG 4-0 birthday present from my DH. You only turn 40 once, so live a little. Wonder if I could use that line next year for 41?

I was introduced to Meclezine when I had an ear infection with vertigo. It really helped me, but I have to watch my dosage as I'll wind up 'sicker than a dog' (but no vertigo!) if I take the larger dose. My doc still prescribes the 25 mg so I cut them in half and have twice the amount for the same price ($5 with insurance). And I like to make sure I eat something with it.

As for sleepiness, Dramamine will knock me out where I've never had that problem with Meclezine.

Hope this all helps and I hope you and sis-in-law have a great trip!

I think Bonine is chewable. If Dramamine is too, Bonine was the first to be made chewable.

Meclizine HCI (25mg) is the generic. It costs around $4 for 16 tablets at Walgreens (Wal-Dram II) and Eckerd drug store. Most of the WalMart's have it. Drugstore.com has the 25mg bottle of 100 for $9 and the 12.5 mg bottle of 100 for $7. It is over the counter.

Bonine is the same thing (eg 8 tablets for $4.29 at Walgreens) for the chewable.

As always, follow the label instructions. Watch out if you have emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, glaucoma or prostrate enlargement, and follow doctor's advice. Not for children under 12, unless instructed by a doctor.

yea i have an inner ear disorder and was given meclazine..didnt do a thing for me except make me feel spacey and sleepy..not good for me...make sure you try it at home before you take it on your trip so you can see what kinda reaction your gonna have to it...

I have found most , if not all OTC motion sickness medications cause drowsiness . The best by far is the "patch" that last for 72 hours that you place behind your ear . Scopolamine is the name of this medication . I have been deep sea fishing all day with 8'-10' swells on a 48' charter boat (thats rough!) and never came close to getting queasy while wearing the patch .

Meclizine is available in a nonprescription strength and also by prescription. It causes much less drowsiness than Dramamine. I personally never get drowsy with it and it works very very well for my motion sickness. I bought a bottle of 100 25-mg tabs for $10 at Walmart Pharmacy and the exp date is 2006 so it will last a very long time. Bonine is a brand-name form and sells for $4 for 8 tabs at my local Walmart, so it's much cheaper to buy generic in quantity. Dramamine less-drowsy formula is meclizine as well, and is also much more expensive than generic.
Most people can take meclizine once a day and it works for 8-12 hours or more. Some people need it twice a day for effective coverage.

The Scopalimine patches are GREAT!
It's been years since I used them, but as a kid they were lifesavers as I used to get TERRIBLY car sick and the patches totally worked 100%

Another great thing is that they last for a couple of days.

Fortunately, I don't get motion sick on amusement rides.
But the next time I purchase any medication for car motionsickness I will buy the Scopalimine patches in a heartbeat!
They even keep me from getting sick while reading in a car.

Give them a try, I think you will be pleased.:smooth:

Of course the ultimate ant-nauseant is ZOFRAN (odansteron) available by prescription only and about $18/pill.

It is not approved for motion sickness (it is approved for nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy/operations etc...) but off-label use for motion sickness nausea is quite common.

It works very specifically to act on the nausea centers in the brain and helps to minimize motion sickness.

...worth asking your doctor about!
