Photography Board Summer Assignment, 2010: Scavenger Hunt

(I really never thought I'd get this one at all!! Lemonade over here is what you call 7Up or Sprite - I didn't even think we did anything like your lemonade! So you can imagine how surprised I was to see this!!!)
I hope you got yourself a glass!? :)

So...here is the most addictive chocolate on the planet for me. :goodvibes
The fact there are still some unopened ones is a miracle.
Far from perfect...but it is a start

Clam Shack* This is the closest thing to a clam shack in Melbourne. Can I claim the two points?

You don't have anything "shack-ier" over there by the water?

Wiki: A shack is a type of small house that is in disrepair.

.

Longhorn* No live Texas Longhorn cattle anywhere in the state of Victoria. This is the Schleich model.

Cigar Store (West) Indian*

These figurines were found in a Cuban Cigar store. The owner of the store told me that he imported them from Cuba....close enough to West Indies!

Veterinarian at work At the Indiana State Fair the vets from Purdue University's Vet program do live spays & neutering (on shelter animals who will be up for adoption)....my daughter was riveted to this neutering (my son was not! lol)
DSC_0402.jpg
Wow, I've never seen anything like that done publicly before! Is it well received by people? How do they have it set up? Is the hope that they'll improve public awareness of spaying/neutering? :thumbsup2

Frisbee In Flight
It's on of the giant Frisbees. As soon as the older boy threw it at the younger boy's back, he turned away because he knew it wouldn't be good.

Irritable
Apparently, some women don't like their picture taken in the middle of the woods with no make-up on

This little guy stole my corn later that night!

Sizzle
Nothing like a Brat on the campfire. I liked this picture better, but if you really need to see a better sizzle I took one with a flash just in case!

It's done every year at the fair (not sure how many years they've been doing it)....it is done on animals up for adoption at a local shelter & the main purpose is to show that spaying/neutering is safe, easy, & the best way to control the animal population so there aren't such an overwhelming number that are strays/stuck in shelters. It's set up in a completely glass-enclosed sterile room (only 1 door in the back where the staff enters & exits to an area set up behind a cordoned off side of the building. There's an overhead camera that feeds live video to several big-screens around the area so you can see the actual surgery (I spared you all *that* view!). The vet said they have a couple of fainters each year....and there are a few staff members that are constantly circulating the viewing area looking for those who may be about to pass out (one of last year's fainters was the husband of one of the vet techs....which the vet was highly amused by). They do both spays & neuters every day of the fair....we just happened upon a neuter....which has led to some pretty interesting questions from my 8-yr-old DD......lol Purdue University has a wonderful veterinary program and they are the ones in charge of this "event" each year at the fair. I hadn't known about it prior to discovering it this year....so I was quite amused that I was able to fulfill this entry of the scavenger hunt at the state fair!

Hey all, I made a trip to Vicksburg, MS last weekend and managed to get some new items and a few replacements. Hope ya'll enjoy

Shushh and Heather - great shots!
And thanks for the vote for the category stretches. I was beginning to think it was only funny to me; but I'm glad to see that it must be an Aussie thing (at the very least)!

Thanks!! Looking forward to more from you!! ;)
Heather, we had 1 warmish weekend. The first one with no rain or clouds. It wasn't warm enough for me to swim! It is still cold!!!

Very jealous of your shots as well as PrincessInOz's. Still hunting for that lemonade stand, Native American Indian, cigar store Indian...

Definitely not sure about the Indian's either!! I can't say I've ever seen one here - but that doesn't mean they aren't around, I guess! Good luck!!

I hope you got yourself a glass!? :)

Would you believe that I was so shocked that I didn't!!! Silly me!!!

You don't have anything "shack-ier" over there by the water?

If we did have anything shack-ier over the water, Workplace Safety or Occupational Health and Safety would have shut it down by now. This was the first place I've seen "over water" that even remotely meets the criteria. (And I have been to the Clam Shack at Kennebunkport, complete with picture AND lemonade stand in 2007!!)

I'll keep looking for a more 'rustic' place by the sea; but most of these are cafe's and serve burgers and sandwiches as well as fish and chips; not clam shacks.

Thanks!

Ghost related
_DSC8799-1.jpg

Here is an explanation from a web site about the ghost of Alice. I thought it was interesting that some people left trinkets on her grave. Another interesting thing is that all of the grass around her grave is worn away. I guess people walk around her grave trying to get her to appear. Here is her story.

There are several accounts to the story of Alice Flagg that have be able to captivate the residents of Pawleys and surrounding areas, but the basic premise is that of a love stricken young woman kept from seeing her true love. Alice Flagg lived with her brother and mother at the seashore home of the owners of Wachesaw Plantation in 1849. Today this home can be found in Murrells Inlet and is known as “The Hermitage”. Alice fell in love with a young man that her family did not approve of. Lacking social stature and wealth, the young man was advised to stay away from Alice, by her family. Despite this he proposed to Alice and gave her a ring. Knowing to well what her family would think of the engagement Alice kept the ring hidden on a string around her neck. Attempting to pry Alice from love’s grasp, her family sent her away to Charleston to attend school. While in Charleston Alice became very sick. When word of Alice’s condition reached Murrells Inlet Alice’s brother went to Charleston to retrieve his sister. However, due to the conditions and length of colonial travel Alice’s condition got worse on the way home. Soon after Alice reached Murrells Inlet she slipped into a comma and died. During the funeral preparations Alice’s engagement ring was found. Disgusted at the thought of Alice being engaged to “a commoner” her family threw the ring out and tried to hide the engagement. Legend has it that to this day Alice is still searching for her ring. Visitors to Pawleys Island can visit Alice’s grave site where many say that if you walk around the grave 13 times Alice will appear to study your ring.

Clams would be nice, but what it serves is probably less important than it's shack appearance. That was more a nice (lovely!) restaurant.

We have strict regulations here, too, but it's not about health, either. It can be a clean and well run shack.

I have faith you can find a shack somewhere around there! :fish:

Usually when I am stopping in here to post or to look at the site I always see great pics that I would like to comment on, but don't have the time. So I am taking this opportunity to say that I am really enjoying all of everyone's pics! I love the history, cleverness and beautiful photography. This assignment has been a lot of fun! I am off to the beach today, so I hope to get a lot more, hopefully I will have some luck. Some of the categories have been very hard for me to find, and some that I thought I would be easy I may never get, but I have been using my camera more than ever!
