Photography Board Monthly Assignment, January, 2010: Through the Window

so these might fit another challenge category as well (probably better!), but i think they work. I planned on using the nikkor 70-200 2.8 for this, but i wasn't pleased with any of the images i took with it. The focal length didn't work well with the layout of our house/window.

Tokina 11-16:

my goal with this shot was to only get his face in focus; once i started editing, i second guessed that. His butt and tail would probably look better in focus. What do you all think?

oh my gosh!!!!!! I looooooooooooooooove that!!!!

Not much of a hockey fan, but I know the coach of the Ft Worth CHL team and got free tickets so off we went to the hockey game.

Took my camera to keep me entertained and figured I could use these in this month's assignment since I was shooting through the glass! :thumbsup2

Had to do a few shots to get the exposures right with the fast action and low light and these would be better if I ran them through a little noiseware, but it's late and I need to hit the sack!!

Here's a few I took the other morning -- I switched to compact florescent bulbs in my landscape lights, and they don't give off much heat, so they don't melt nearly as much snow as the older bulbs.

These were early morning shots.

I'm finding this to be a really tough challenge. Although I haven't tried getting pictures of "cool" windows, I've found that most of the time, anything I've wanted to shoot would be better accomplished by actually going outside (because the window was immaterial to the shot, it just messed up the IQ a bit). I really need to start thinking about this one...

I did get a shot through a window of our dog while he was pooping the other day (who gave me a dirty look as if he didn't appreciate my photographing him), but I used my better judgment and decided not to post it. I figure not everyone has an 11 year old's sense of humor like myself.

My younger daughter had her first dance class last week. It was hard to tell who was more excited, her or her older sister for her. This first shot is my older daughter finally getting the chance to watch her sister through the window at dance class.

What she saw through the window - I love that her sister is the only child you can see reflected in the mirror in the class.

How about through the cage?

From the PA Farm Show on Saturday.... I became mildly obsessed with shooting the chikens and turkeys...

And here's one that was actually shot through a window, because there was no other choice...

Don, you are really great at taking the simplest of subjects and making them amazing. Thank you for sharing your work with us. I can't quite get these type of results myself (yet, lol), but it's something to aspire to. Can you share your settings on the first photo? Was metering tough on this one? What did you do in pp?

dcg0317 : your photo is very inspiring, thank you!

Thank you Linda and soonish.
I shot it in raw like all my shots, metering wasn't hard because being so bright at the end of the hallway, but the shutter speed was still slow even at ISO 400, it was 1/13 sec, I was hand holding this also, I used my Canon 10-22mm lens which for some reason I can get good low light shots hand held, maybe because the weight of the lens, and also just tucking in my elbows.
I only adjusted for WB in Lightroom but didn't like the looks because it was too white looking and remembering that the lights gave off a yellowish glow in the room and hallway, I then adjusted with Levels and some curves, then a little contrast adjustment, and finally noise reduction.
I also cropped some of the left side out and then resized after saving the original, and applied a little USM.

I'm going to have to try this tomorrow with my little Nikon CoolPix...but here are a couple I took this past summer...
