Photo Sharing: Ultra Wide Angle

Now I'm not one to shy away from spending money on a lens, rotfl2 and I love my ultra wide's, but that's a big price difference for 2mm IMO unless the 12-24 is not a good lens (which I don't believe to be true). I've had a 10-20, an 11-18 and a 12-24 as I've changed camera bodies etc. I switched from the 10-20 to the 11-18 b/c I prefered the colors produced by the coating better on the 11-18 and the 1mm wasn't that different. Then when I got full frame I got the 12-24mm which was a full frame lens. I now use that on the crop body b/c the difference between 12mm and 11mm did not make that big of a difference. If anything for a crop sensor I'd look for an 8-16mm or such b/c you do start to see a difference by that point. Just my opinion you didn't ask for!

I went to Ritz this a.m. and had them have a Tamron 10-24mm shipped to the store so I could try it out on my camera, hopefully on Monday. They don't stock them How do you sell lenses if you don't have them? Both the manager and the girl I talked to each own one and really like it. I am still very intrigued by the used Nikon 12-24 and since I have never used an ultrawide, I wouldn't miss 10mm but looking at pictures taken with both last night for hours on Flickr, the Tamron's looked good to my untrained eye so I am going to at least give it a look.

Yes, that's one of Sigma's newer lens - the APS-C version of their 12-24mm. I'd be going for that one over the $900 Nikon 10-24. Less expensive and for me the wide part is more important than having a bigger range.

If you hadn't found a nice deal on the Nikon 12-24 it probably wouldn't be such a hard decision would it!

Definitely wouldn't be as hard! I am pulled toward the Nikon name even though I have seen plenty of great pictures from other makers.

This thread got me very interested in a UWA lens. I was looking at that Sigma and it looks really nice. However, due to the curvature of the lens, you can't put a filter on it. It is also more prone to getting scratched, dinged and is harder to clean. But I'm loving that it is 8 mm and not a fisheye!

Jamian, is this shot HDR? It's beautiful. I have a similar shot but not at all as nice as yours!

Thanks. Yes it is HDR. I used the exposure blending feature in Photomatix. It also required the use of some local adjustment brushes in Lightroom to bring down the bright lights in the fountain. I tried to make it as subtle as possible, not like the cartoon-looking HDR you see sometimes (which I've been guilty of at times...).

Thanks. Yes it is HDR. I used the exposure blending feature in Photomatix.

Yes, that Exposure Fusion mode in Photomatix is a great tool. Sometimes I use it alone; other times I might make both a tone-mapped and a fused version of an image and combine them in layers using Photoshop.
