I have not traveled since 9/11.
I hear that photo ID's must now match plane tickets.
If that is so, what do you do for kids, (teenagers in particular), who have not gotten a driver's license yet. Do they need a birth certificate or what??
Will they not board without a photo ID?
Thanks!

We have flown twice since 9/11. The first time was to Orlando at the end of Sept. through Delta and the second time was April to Arizona through Southwest. I have 4 year old twin girls and both times that we have flown, only the adults were asked for photo ID's. I did carry their birth certificates in case anyone wanted to see it. But they never asked.

I went in November with my 14 year old DD and I took her birth certificate and had her take her school ID just in case. We never had to produce anything, they asked her age when we checked our baggage that was it.

Here in Indiana you can obtain photo ID's (State ID"s) from the DMV where our drivers licenses are issued. They are inexpensive to obtain, so I got them for our two kids (6 and 4) last year before our trip. They did not need them, but I made it a point to have each of them show the ID along w/their ticket wherever needed. I like to let them handle things for themselves when possible, so they are not as shy when addressing adults :) Plus with teenagers, they may be nice for them to have anyway.

We went to our DMV (NYS) and got photo ID's for our kids also (age 6 & 8). We flew SW last November, I think they were about $7 or $8 each. Both kids felt so important to have their own ID. The ticket takers from SW were wonderful, they looked at the ID's and called them both by their first names, made them feel pretty grown up!

I believe the ID's are good for like 5 years.

We went down during spring break. I took my DD (15) birth certificate along but never needed it. They would ask her how old she was when she presented her boarding pass. You might want to call your airline to double check what they require or just take along bc to be safe.
