Photo Contest Rules Question?

andromedaslove,

Is there any chance that we could either get a rule change or an enforcement on image sizes? There seem to be a lot of violations of the 800x600 rule lately. It is already around six or seven in the Donald thread so far. I would prefer to see it 1024x768. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

Thank you,

Kevin

I might be one of the guilty contestants. I didn't know there was a size rule..

actually this is copied directly from the rules...

"Pictures can not be altered, except to crop, resize, or add watermark. This is a photography contest, not an editing contest.

Pictures can not be any larger than

Pictures may be taken at any time for any contest

Voting will start the day the contest ends. "

My preference would be for the rules to change to:

"Only one entry per subject per person. Everything else is at the discretion of the photographer."

we've been down that road before, that would open up to too much editing, and discourage people using P&S cameras or lacking in editing skills...

as I stated in the earlier debates on this issue, someone would certainly be more than welcome to run such a contest.

I just don't think we should tell someone who puts a lot of time into this thing, how to run their contest..

I guess that means that those who shoot raw and "adjust" things should be disqualified? :scratchin :stir:

I think that if folks get caught up in a rules debate, then the purpose of the friendly competion gets destroyed.

The purpose as I see it is to share the fun of our hobbies, photography and disney. Honestly who really cares who wins or loses? If the competition is what it is about, then there are other avenues for that else where. I would vote for keeping this place more friendly, but that's just me.

you'll have to look elsewhere for debate, this one has been beaten repeatedly,

you missed the point of my post,, the line I was referencing was the line that mentioned picture size, yet didn't give a asize..

I wasn't looking for debate. I was attempting some humor. BTW, I prefer the larger size (see more detail).

Unfortunately, that link in her signature points to the old rules thread that has that size missing, but the sticky has it listed. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1304028

I am actually thinking about it from a slightly different perspective. I would like the size increased b/c after seeing other people's images at that size they really do look better and would like to see everyones that way. I do not feel like I am being cheated or anything like that by using 800x600. I understand why the 800x600 rule exists; it is to prevent images too large from going off the screen. From what I understand, most people are running their screens larger than 1024x768 these days, so it would make sense to allow larger than 800x600 in posts. I personally can see all of a 1024 wide image plus a little wasted white space on my screen(and my monitor is certainly nothing special).

actually that wasn't pulled from her sig. it was from the link at the top of the current contest
Line 8 from the sticky: Pictures can not be any larger than 800x600 Edit: I understand the problem now. The link in each week's contest points to an incomplete set of rules.

I'm not a fan of changing a rule until the old one is shown to be broken. Enforcement would be nice but it's not something I'm used to, living where I do.

I got it backwards. The link in her template for each contest points to the old thread and her sig points to the '07 thread.

Wow ... as I was scanning the old posts on here I found this one, and just wanted to add my input since I missed it somehow before. The reason for the size restriction has nothing to do with the photos over running the edges, although that would be an issue. The problem is with the fact that I have to save all of the photos to my computer, in a file just for the contests, then I have to upload them to photobucket (used to be disboards photo section). Sometimes (more so with disboards than photo bucket) if the files are too large I have to resize them in order for them even to be uploaded. It just became too much of a hassle. I hope that helps everyone understand.

Wouldn't it be easier for you to just right-click on each photo, select "Properties", and copy the address. Then you could reference it in the same location as the original poster.

If you want to stick with Photobucket, consider downloading Flock. It is a Firefox based browser that has an upload tool that will auto resize the images and load them to Photobucket.

That would work ... but I am trying to keep an actual record of all of the winning photos. Literally, I have them all, from last year and this year, saved to my computer. That way when I do the "best of 2007" polls I have them all handy. It is too easy for someone to remove their photo unintentionally, not realizing that I will need it again for the beginning of the next years contest.

I agree with you .:) Its not like there is a cash prize involved. ;)
