personal item?

Yes, I am back with yet another question! Can you tell I am leaving pretty soon!? I know on Delta you can bring a carry-on, plus one personal item (such as a purse, diaper bag, laptop). I am going to have each one of my kids take a carry-on (that meets the size requirement). To take for their personal item, is a backpack too big? I think the backpack is 15.5"H x 12"w x 6.5"D. I don't see any size requirement on their website for the personal item. Also, the personal item is the one that they would be putting under the seat in front of them correct?

Sorry to sound ignorant, but I have not flown since I was in high school!

Thanks,
Jen

A normal sized (not backpacking size) backpack is fine for your personal item.

Also, the personal item is the one that they would be putting under the seat in front of them correct?

That is right.

These are like backpacks for school. I am assuming they would be ok then.

Thanks!
Jen

Since it has been awhile since I have flown, I am not sure how much room is under the seat. Will a school sized backpack fit under the seat?

Thanks

I think it will, unless it is STUFFED, which might make it too fat.

I bring a good sized tote bag in which I put all the things I want to have near me. My purse also goes into the tote.

The backpack should be fine - however, it may need to go in the overhead bin rather than under the seat. I have a camera backpack that I take that just fits under the seat in front and is 10.4W X 8.1D X 11.4H in which is smaller than your backpacks.

This is direct from Delta's website:

Carry-on Baggage

Our goal is to provide you with a comfortable and seamless travel experience. To improve onboard efficiency, we ask that you follow our carry-on baggage policy as outlined below.
You may carry on one bag and one personal item at no charge. Please note that all items must easily fit into the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
Approved Personal Carry-on Items

  • 1 purse, briefcase, camera bag, or diaper bag;
  • or 1 laptop computer (computers cannot be checked and must be carried on);
  • or 1 item of a similar or smaller size to those listed above.
Additional Approved Carry-on Items

You may also carry on the following items, which do not count as personal items:

  • A jacket or umbrella.
  • Food or drink purchased after clearing the security checkpoint.
  • Duty free merchandise.
  • Special items like strollers, child restraint seats, or assistive devices such as wheelchairs or crutches.
Carry-on Baggage Size Restrictions

When oversized bags do not fit in the overhead bins, delays occur. Fees will be applied to the oversized bag if it has to be checked at the gate. To avoid delays as well as fees, follow these size requirements:

  • Baggage may not exceed 45 linear inches (or 115 cm) in combined length, width, and height.
  • Baggage must fit easily in the Carry-on Baggage Check, which is located near the check-in counters and at the gate and is approximately 22" x 14" x 9" or 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters.

If my "purse"/tote thing that came with my small carry-on baggage is too big to fit under the seat, are they going to charge me then? It's part of a luggage set, and it's still a small volume - but it's wide and thin, even if not deep - it was designed to hold a small laptop in one pocket (I put the snacks there) and could probably fit a rolled up jacket besides. Has anyone ever heard of fees being charged after you get on, if the item is too big to be properly stowed, or do they just yell at you to put it away during the seat-buckling time?

Sometimes, they will gate check the bag.

As a fellow traveler, I would ask that if you choose to carry on both a personal item and a "carry-on" -- please, please, please only put the carry-on item in the overhead bin until everyone has boarded the plane. If there is room, then you can put your personal item overhead. The "personal" item is meant to be placed on the floor under the seat.

I don't get it when the frequent flyers (business travelers) feel they can board first with a coat, 22" (or larger) carry-on, and computer bag and place them all in the overhead bin ... and then close the bin which is full with just their stuff!!!!

Then, during the flight, they have to stand up and start pulling their items (computer, newspaper, etc) out of the overhead bin thus risking things being dropped on other's heads!!! Or they put it all up there and then, while the lowly, non-elite folks try to board, they stand in the aisle accessing their "personal" bag which they have put in the overhead!!

Can you tell, I hate it when the flight attendants don't manage the carry-on baggage issue appropriately????

Just reemphasizing what VAN said, because I don't think you stressed it enough ;)

Hahahaha - as the passenger in question, I'm more than happy to comply! I'm not trying to steal your space - I just like my tote/purse thing with me, since it's got my valuables and wallet in it. I'm actually the person that tries to hide it half under the seat in front of me, half under the blanket between my legs until the last possible minute - I don't want to take up the room up top if there are still more bags to be stowed, because NO ONE should have to think theirs won't fit, and god bless the person who could suggest that any wheeled carry-on luggage could just sit next to you flopping around in a flight - not that that person exists, but you get what I'm saying! I'd rather try and keep out my carry-on tote from the bin and hold onto it for dear life (like I'd ever need to!!) than to think that actual luggage couldn't get stowed.

So, no worries from me! :cool1:

I normally fly Jetblue so your first checked bag is free, but I just flew Delta yesterday to use up some old Skymiles. I couldn't believe the size of some of the so called "Carry-ons" being brought on the plane, they were huge. I assume Delta has either relaxed the size restriction of carry-ons or people are abusing the system to avoid the $25 checked baggage fee.

I checked the bag I put under the seat in front of me on Delta yesterday.

14" high, 17" wide, 10" depth

If that fits then I would expect that MOST of you can get your personal item under there. If you honestly think it won't fit, then it's time to check.

Most of them are avoiding the checked baggage fee.

I was glad to see on our Airtran flight home last year, the FA's were on top of things. People would turn carry-ons sideways, and the FA's were right behind them turning them around with the wheels at the back of the overhead. If it didn't fit, it was gate checked. Of course, they didn't get charged, so it was kind-of annoying, considering they were bending the rules and didn't have to pay to gate check their luggage.....
