Peculiar Op-Ed About WDW

Speaking of hated phrases, when will the kool aid reference be gone from conversation? That refers to mass murder/coaxed suicide. (And it wasn't kool aid.) Can we stop using that to mean "I bought into something that I think is awesome"?

But, there are a lot of phrases that "mean something" now and this is one of them. No, it wasn't kool-aid, the popular drink but it was a drink of some kind. The "kool-aid" means just what you said. So, it's quicker and easier to say it.

I have a daughter-in-law who was a journalist and I once referred to something as a Ziploc bag. She told me that she would never refer to something with a specific brand name so I use "zippered bag" now. You shouldn't refer to anything as a kleenex but rather nose tissue. Really?

We actually encountered a husband and wife going at each other inside Restaurantosaurus on our last visit. Quite unsettling. Several others had to ask them to tone it down multiple times.

This is why my husband and I do TS ADRs in the parks lol

He's not writing a trip report with everything included. He's writing an essay. And he's not writing for the Dis.

And if I write a trip report for our recent trip, right now I still can't find any actual moments of happiness from it in my memories. DH and DS say they had fun but they sure weren't acting like it at all!

It's possible to have a trip without enjoying it. Trust me. (Even when you had every expectation of enjoyment)

I agree, we've had some real doozies.

I totally agree Bumbershoot. I consider it a personal insult and nothing more then mocking/ sarcasm which is not permitted on the dis.

How is it a personal insult to you? Even if you disagree, it won't change how people use the word.

Whether they change or not is not the point. I have been addressed in that manner now and then because I have supported my position on a Disney matter and when someone with a different view finds they cannot support there position any longer they use that term to put others down. It implies a Disney supporter is so silly as to drink the sweet drink and that makes them so dumb as to not know they are wrong. That is why I consider it a personal insult and mocking/sarcasm.

Now I have politely answered your question and will drop the matter.

All this talk of Kool Aid has me thirsty.

That said...if you don't know where the term comes from, it actually has a rather morbid history (and explains its meaning and use in the common vernacular).

Google "Jonestown Massacre".

Yes I remember that. The leader poisoned the Kool aid given to the group and they all died. Very sad. However Kool Aid was and is a sweet child's drink and has been around since was a kid in the 50's. We would set up little stand and sell cups of the stuff and make a little money back in the day!:duck:

I can only speak for myself, but I am familiar with where the phrase originated. Meanings change as time goes on.

Right. But the phrase "drinks the kool-aid" meant the way it's meant now (as in, someone who unquestionably supports a position, the "drank the kool-aid") comes directly from that incident.

I haven't had this experience with a Disney trip, but we had a fall break weekend in Chicago a couple of years ago where the kids were at each other's throats the whole time. I was ready to leave them home on all future excursions (at least until I cooled down), yet they'd tell you they had a great time. Kind of like Harsanyi - he remembers the heat and the lines; his kids remember the rides and the fun, which if he went for the kids' sake is really a win.

Well I offered my view and disagree with yours...to each there own!

David Harsanyi is a well respected journalist and political commentator. He doesn't need to write a blog post about Disney World to get attention. It's just a light hearted, humorous piece. Jeez.

Your opinion on he article......happy to read it......but I do not agree....AKK
