Paris 2024 Olympics thread (the opening ceremony is Friday) on NBC/USA network/Peacock and other NBC Universal stations.

Yes that’s the one I saw! Then they said something about the time she will lose getting to the pit

Great race though! Nice job by the US rider to get Silver, but the French woman just ran aaway with it. It's nice to see the home country doing so well thus far!

I was mad at the Peacock coverage though. The stream ended before 2 & 3 crossed teh finish line. I tried to find it covered somewhere, but you never really know what stream is showing what because they cut around. I was able to get my NBC stream up to see it. That's annoying though!

Wonder when they are going to add fishing as an Olympic sport???....................LOL.
I believe 3 eyed fishing is an event at the next China Games.

Why does street bicycle racing have a person with a whole new bike following you that will jump out and give you a new one at a moment’s notice

But

Off-road bicycle racing they have to go all the way to a pit?
Differing traditions. And it's hard to follow in a car carrying bikes on thin trails that mountain bikes frequently run. I think it was in the womens time trial where the guy went to give the woman a new bike after a total flat, face planted, and ruined the bike he was giving her. YOU HAD ONE JOB!!! ONE JOB!!!

That's what coverage has become. Olympic McNuggets. Not the Olympics

I mena, the beauty of watching streams is that they show the whoel thing - they were showing the entire race, but then the stream ended when the race was supposed to end, but sports sometimes runs over. How can they not account for that?

Yeah, they always chop up primetime coverage into "nuggets" which is annoying, but none of that is live. I like that the time difference isn't so great that the live coverage still works. I don't know what I'm gonna do when I have to go to the office this week though! 🤣 LA will be fun because the primetime coverage will be live!

I know! For so long it was said they wore the tiny bottoms because that’s what they preferred. Ok. But that’s obviously not the case when they are offered tiny bottoms and leggings and they choose leggings. Both USA and Canada today. Not sure of the other teams since that was all I watched.

Whatever makes them feel good is fine with me. I’m just glad they can choose now.

The do choose to wear the bikini bottoms, it is their choice. The actual wording of the rule is:

A player’s equipment consists of shorts or a bathing suit. A jersey
or “tank-top” is optional except when specified in Tournament
Regulations. Players may wear a hat/head covering.
4.1.1
4.3.1 For FIVB, World and Official Competitions, players of a given
team must wear uniforms of the same colour and style according
to tournament regulations. Player’s uniforms must be clean.
4.3.2 Players must play barefoot except when authorized by the 1st referee.
4.3.3 Players’ jerseys (or shorts if players are allowed to play without shirt)
must be numbered 1 and 2.
4.3.3.1 The number must be placed on the chest (or on the front of the shorts).
4.3.3.2 The number must be of a contrasting colour to the jersey and a
minimum of 10 cm in height. The stripe forming the number shall be a
minimum of 1.5 cm wide.
16
PART 2 - SECTION 1: GAME4.4 CHANGE OF EQUIPMENT
If both teams arrive at a match dressed in jerseys of the same colour, a
toss shall be conducted to determine which team shall change.
The first referee may authorize one or more players:
4.4.1 to play with socks and/or shoes,
4.4.2 to change wet jerseys between sets provided that the new ones also
follow tournament and FIVB regulations.
4.3.3
4.4.3 If requested by a player, the first referee may authorize him/her to play
with an undershirt and training pants.

I love these kinds of posts. You can be anyone online.

Believe what you want but I know who I am. I've coached indoor at 3 major games and beach at one. I've coached university and youth. I've coached a number of national championships. I've also spent the last 15 years working in our amateur sport system.

I had it on regular broadcast NBC and they showed silver, bronze and 4th as they crossed. We don’t have any kind of streaming where I live. I get mad that for things like gymnastics they ONLY show US. I want to see EVERYONE qualify!

On the streams you can watch everybody, but sometimes there is no commentating or anything. Some people might prefer that!

Yeah, I was anble to switch and see the finish, but the battle for Silver was so close - I couldn't believe that the stream just ended!

We are watching the other gymnastics competition this morning on one of the 'other' NBC channels (they have 4 or 5 on our cable system), not streaming. So they are showing it, but if you don't have cable or don't have the right cable channel, of course you can't get it. But it's definitely being shown on cable feeds, not necessarily streaming.

Where I am you can’t do streaming or even satellite channels. It just buffers. We have to have wired cable

Thanks! I think I found it.

Maybe you don't have a cable package that has all channels. Naturally a US company is going to focus on U.S. athletes for medal runs but I've been recording and watching things like qualifying for men's gymnastics example that had subdivision 1 and 2; 1 was U.S. but 2 has been china, ukraine, japan, etc.

There's E!, USA, NBC, CNBC and then Paris Extra 1 and 2 that has coverage and what we're watching.

The latest civil unrest was over the election. They are just as divided as the US and just as divided on what took place in opening ceremonies. Catholicism is still the predominant religion there.
Well if you would have gotten a clue what it was before you posted, you wouldn't be looking so bad. That's all I can say here. But rather than derail this thread, I suggest you take it to the controversial topics board where religious and political discussions are allowed.

Archery was such a nail-biter for the reigning chamion S. Korea who have won every Olympic Gold Medal since the event started - very exciting!

Just a random question.

When did the "tradition" begin of some Athletes "biting" their Medal for pictures begin and what does it signify?

I always thought that it came from the old tradition of biting coins to somehow test authenticity. Biting a medal means it's the real deal. Of course, I could be wrong.

Yeah, pure gold is soft, so that's where it comes from. They should be careful not to leave teeth-marks in it, though I think most them don't really bite down on it.
