Parents of the Class of 2019

Contract signed to work at the summer camp she used to attend. Not really happy with the other kids she works directly with, but I told her to make the best of it. Not many places hire a 15 year old where we live.

We still have about a month left. Cannot believe she, my youngest, is a Junior High School kid this fall.

Yep. AP classes, SAT, and every day, college junk mail. I'm not sure where she wants to go, let alone what she really wants to do. Not worried, her older sibling did not get the idea until later in his Senior year. So far, sticking to it, and this fall, I will have a Sophomore college kid too.

Sigh, now I feel old, and poor. LOL

Dd16 wants a job desperately, but can't get one. Dd14 is now working at the garden center where ds19 works, and dd20 used to work, they'd hire her in a heartbeat, but with track practice every day after school, and dance four nights a week, plus track meets, 4 1/2 hours of dance on Sunday's, school not getting out until the end of June, 4 days in New Orleans in the beginning of June, then a week at the shore with us, at least 3 weeks away with friends (that have vacation homes) - when would she be working? I told her next year she would have to forgo the summer weeks with friends, she has to work to get spending money for college. Her siblings had about a $5000 cushion. Ds19 also works for a private pool club, I told him to keep his ears open about available positions with flexibility.

DD would love to get a job for this summer, but she's got about 5 weeks where we're actually at home, it's going to be a pretty busy summer. She gets done today, has her last final this afternoon. Once we get the PSAT scores in, I'm sure we're going to get another deluge of college junk mail, and when the AP scores arrive there will be even more. I told her she needs to make sure she stays on top of the timing for an internship she is interested in for next summer. They will probably have deadlines for applications coming up pretty soon, I can't believe they are all going to be Juniors next year!

I'll have 2 in high school, I'm really feeling old!

If it makes you feel better, next year I'll have 2 in college, 3 in high school!

We had a family wedding this past weekend - my son was the best man for his uncle's (my BIL) wedding. A couple weeks ago, they informed him that he was going to be expected to give a best man's speech. The boy hates public speaking with a passion and he didn't really start thinking about what he was going to say until Friday night, but all that being said, he ended up doing really well. We were really proud of him.

I have too many various rants that I could give about the wedding (e.g. the bride) that I won't even go into, but the one plus of the weekend is that we got some great family shots of our family all dressed up. Here's my favorite of my son and I from before the ceremony...

We had a family wedding last summer that I loved getting some family dressed up pictures at too, funny, there was drama at that one as well, not the bride, but the sister of the bride, and the mother of the bride (my SIL). It's a great picture!

That's where DD is at too. FIL had a stroke over the winter and has cut back his fishing schedule (private charters) so her usual flexible job is going to be more limited than in years past, but I don't see where she has the time for a "real" job between 4h and how much we're just plain gone over the summer. And I'm not ready for her to be staying home to work yet - I'm having a hard enough time with the realization that my oldest is pretty much done with family vacations, now that he's working full time and getting ready for college. Next summer will be even worse because she's already working on her app to study abroad, and if she's accepted that'll mean 8 weeks in Japan between junior & senior years.

The college junk mail is crazy, isn't it? DD's school does the PSAT annually as part of their test prep regimen so it started early and is only piling up more over time. A lot of it goes straight to the bin, though, because she does have an idea of what she wants to do so she can quickly filter out any school that doesn't offer her desired program.

On the bright side, I'm too busy feeling broke to feel old... This fall marks the start of two painful years of paying tuition for all three kids - one in college, one in private high school, and one in private elem. :scared:

Ouch! You're definitely feeling the pinch!

We decided just as a lark to keep all of the junk mail DD gets from colleges to see how high the stack gets over the next 4 years. It'll be interesting, but I think I'm going to need a bigger bin! I don't even want to think about next summer, she's looking at an internship in Boston so between that and a school trip, she'll be gone all summer as well. She'd miss the family vacation, which DS won't mind at all, but it'll be one more milestone that I'm not eager to hit!

My DD must have used 2 versions of her name (the formal and the informal) when taking those tests and we actually get 2 of everything! :faint:

I'm throwing it out as fast as it arrives. Although stacking it up sounds fun too!

We finally have news about my daughter's AP World History Exam--College Board is going to let the kids re-take IF the student wants to (not sure when that will be, but not next year), or he/she can choose to let the test he/she took go forward and be scored. My DD chose to not re-take. I can't tell you how relieved I am for that to be resolved.

One and a half more days of school. Then we are leaving on Saturday for our LA/Disneyland/Catalina Island/Yosemite/Sequioa-Kings Canyon summer vacation!!!! I am sad to see another high school year concluded--how is it possible this Sophomore year is over and only two more to go--but we are getting soooo excited about our vacation!!!!

I am really enjoying reading this thread.

That sounds like a cool vacation! We are going to Colorado in a few weeks but with a graduating senior in track, I haven't had time to plan it all out like I usually do so hopefully we find some fun things to do.

So my son finally starts to show signs of interest in colleges and, naturally, it's University of Denver. :headache: I was pretty much ready to blow it off, figuring we wouldn't look for anything outside of reasonable driving distance, but my wife wasn't as quick to dismiss it. So, here I sit, trying to see if we can find cheap airfare to Denver sometime this summer. :o

Mini- vacation? Could be fun! They do learn a lot from the actual visits and get a feel for where they belong. But I'm with you- seems they ought to be able to find someplace that's not so far away. It would be hard to move them in when you have to fly!?!

My DD has all kinds of interest in colleges- always coming up with some odd one in another state because "it has a good theater program". She is easily swayed and thinks she needs to go someplace because of what she heard somewhere. Her old choir teacher told her about where her daughter is in Chicago for performing arts and how she just made so many connections there she wouldn't anywhere else. I tell her she can get a good education and make connections closer to home. Plus she hates cities and she hates long drives. Not to mention we don't really have a plan for paying for a private college unless she gets really good offers AND I'm not sold on this "Theater Major" idea.

She also doesn't like the idea of standard dorm rooms  especially after seeing the sweet suite setup her sister will have at community college. IF she does get valedictorian, she could get free tuition at that cc. But her excuse is they don't offer any theater. Well, I just now looked and they started theater this spring! Woohoo! LOL there goes that excuse. They are even doing a musical this fall. Will definitely take her to see that while visiting her sister and see what she thinks of the program.

If we can get decent priced flights, we'll probably try to do a 2-3 day mini-vacation out to Denver. I know that Frontier flies there from Cleveland a lot, so we'll be keeping an eye out for deals. Yeah, thinking of the logistics of moving a kid into a college that far away (I looked, it's like a 20 hour drive) gives me pause to doing something like that, but I suppose anything is possible.

All of my kids are involved in theater. I told them there is community theater everywhere! Both dd20 and ds19 auditioned into their university choirs, and ds is thinking about auditioning for next year's musical. We live in a great area for theater (10 mikes from NYC), but making a living as a theater major is like winning the lottery. Dd is an accounting major, and already has a great job offer for January 2018 (more than twice my first starting salary), ds is a finance major. They will both have student loans to repay.

Sounds good! DD will have to have loans and is aware she ought to pick another major to go with a theater major/minor but she can't figure out in what. Her strength is definitely in words and not numbers- on the ACT she got 33 in English and 19s in math and science. Possibly something in communications- she thinks she would like to be a social media manager for a company.

There is a senior girl going to AMDA in NYC for acting so it will be interesting to see how that goes for her.

Well, since I live in Denver, and work downtown not far from DU, let me know if you guys have any questions or need tips for fun things to do!

My kiddos are off to Space Camp a week from tomorrow for their first vacation of the summer, it's only going to get busier from there!

DD had time to kill in town this afternoon so I had her stop in the 4-H Extension office and ask if they needed any help with their kids day camps. She's not in 4-H but enjoyed doing the camps when she was a kid. She is now signed up to volunteer at three one-day camps. So if nothing else she will get some volunteer work in for her scholarship apps.

The coffee shop had a classmate of hers working and I bet they won't hire any more kids so that option is probably out.

DH took DD (and DS) to Space Camp this weekend, they flew into Nashville and stopped by the Vanderbilt campus just to look around. I guess the area was crazy because of the Predators NHL Stanley Cup finals, but she said the campus was pretty. It hasn't been on her list, but they keep sending her literature, so she looked them up and they're pretty high up on the list of top Biotechnical Engineering schools, which is an interest, so I guess it might now be on our list!
