Well, we do not do homecoming, but DD announced there is the formal dance, winter ball, and Valentine's dance. My poor pocketbook. We did hair and nails to all the parties last year. Now to find reasonable dresses. Thankfully, formal is not until later October.

Hope all sophomores are settling into their first semester.

o my daughter has a year sub in Algebra who just graduated college this year so it's his first teaching job. He is not explaining things well so this is frustrating daughter. Then he only has 15 minutes for extra help after school.

try Khan Academy online - he does great free instructional math videos. I also have an app on my phone called Photomath that solves the problems and shows step by step - a good way to check your work on problems that already have the equations.

Sophomore year and a tale of two homecomings... DD is with her boyfriend at his (public) school's homecoming tonight. The kids get dressed up, of course, but it is a pretty laid-back event - they went out for dinner at a local restaurant/bar that has good food (think a Mom & Pop along the lines of Applebees) followed by the dance in the school gym. Two weeks from now is her (private) school's homecoming, and it is an entirely different creature. DD was asked today if she wanted to join with a group that is going in on a limo, and the dinner/dance is at a country club in a more affluent community about 20 miles from here. FTR, I won't be shelling out for a limo. It might be tempting if the other kids lived here in town and it saved me the driving, but I'd just be swapping driving her to/from the dance for driving her to/from a friend's house, almost as far away. I don't even want to think about what they do for prom!

So far, so good on the school year. Japanese class has been a source of stress almost from day one, but other than that and frustration with a first-year chem teacher that she thinks moves too slow for an honors class, academics are going well so far. And the breathing room of not having a fall sport has certainly made getting back into the study routines easier.

We can't convince our son that homecoming would be fun to go to - even just stag with a group of guys. He insists that dances are 'stupid' and he hated last year's homecoming.

He takes his Driver's License exam on Saturday.

My DD is doing a small revolution to not go to homecoming. Dances at her high school tend to be loud music, lots of grinding, and not much fun, so she and a bunch of friends are going to head out to do laser tag. They did Dart Warz last year, but the local place has some officials who play pretty blatant favorites so they're not going to go there.

Driver's exam coming up here on Wednesday.

Heaven help us. This one is rearing to go go go.

Homecoming was fun, but pretty low key because it's deemed a casual dance, so no pretty dress shopping.

Tennis districts start today and the season is over after this week. I'm ready for it to be over. These have been some really long days.

Our school has a 'testing day' in October, where the Freshman take some sort of standardized test (like a pre-PSAT), Sophomores and Juniors take PSATs (Juniors for the National Merit qualification) and Seniors get a day off to do college tours.

Oh, and soccer has been a rough go this year for my son. New coaching staff came in and for whatever reason, our son is not on his regular rotation of players for varsity (after playing a lot of minutes as a freshman). So he went to the JV coach and asked to play some on the JV team, knowing that he needed playing time to improve. It was good of him to swallow some pride and it's been tough for him, especially since the varsity is not playing that well and he thinks he could contribute if given a chance. At least he's got two more years to go - and there's like 9 seniors graduating.

DD had a blast at her homecoming dance on Saturday. Unlike many, she wore a $4.99 resale shop dress & sandals "because you can't dance in heels!!". She was also happy the football team won - they got clobbered last year LOL

DD's dress was $7.95 at Salvation Army and altered by Grandma to fit. Her (flat) sandals were some I got on clearance at Delia's a few years ago for $3 that she had never had occasion to wear yet. We lucked out. Our team didn't win but made a decent showing which for us is an achievement! She had a good time but was starting a cold the day of the dance so she didn't feel too great by the time she got home.

Yesterday morning she didn't want to get up at the normal time due to her cold so I left her home. When she got up and around she decided she would drive to school on her school permit rather than have me come after her. So one successful trip to town all on her own. She'll do the round trip tomorrow alone as I'm taking DD17 on a college visit. Unless DH ends up working in town and takes her. Scary but it really helps out when they can become more independent!

I was looking at Forever 21 online and they have lots of dresses under $25.

So are you saying she can drive alone now? That happens here at 17. Congrats to your daughter but if you're like me I was a nervous wreck that my older daughters got their permit.

Now daughter's English teacher said she is leaving to become a vice principal. I hope she doesn't get another first year teacher like her math one. And her English teacher was someone daughter liked the best out of all her teachers.

She's legal to drive alone how. They do that at 16 here if they have had their permit for 6months and enough practice time. And yes, that absolutely makes me a nervous wreck. She didn't understand why I wasn't quite as enthusiastic as she was.

I think she's ready though. She has put in many hours behind the wheel since getting her permit a year ago. But still......

Hugs, Mom. If your daughter was good at practicing, not following too closely to other cars and not speeding she will be ok. I have two licensed daughters, one who is almost 19 and she does pretty well so far.
