Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

Just hit the first application snafu. One of DD's colleges hasn't received her SAT scores, which were sent from the CollegeBoard 3 1/2weeks ago. The school asked if the same name is on the SAT scores that is on the application :confused3 I did check and yes, it's her name on both. Funny how another school got them though.

Oh well, was able to schedule another audition though.:cheer2:

one of DS colleges hasn't gotten his HS transcript, which was sent electronically a week ago. I'm giving it a few more days, then calling. His ACT score must have gone through to the school, though ... all of a sudden we're getting targeted emails from the honors department. :rotfl:

Well my DD got in 3 applications last night (today is the early action deadline). Woot woot!!! We should know something by Christmas by doing the early action (non binding). She was agonizing over her essays & finally had her AP Literature teacher look over them. Thank goodness that is done!! Now we cross our fingers she gets her first choice.

:)

I

All the audition schedules are out finally as are her dance competition dates. Amazingly there is only one audition conflict where she will have to decide which school to audition live and which to audition via DVD. There is also only one school audition which precludes her from one dance competition. (I don't like the dance competitions so DH and I are happy about that one).:cool1: Looks like we will be traveling every weekend in Feb. and one in Jan. for school auditions. Not sure how much we will travel for dance competitions I am hoping she won't do any out of town ones with 5 trips to LA and one to Denver....though there is a chance we will do the Denver trip in November if she can miss one play rehearsal. She meets with that schools rep on Friday so if she wants to apply then we will talk to the play director and see if we can go in November.

Bluestars I am glad your DS is happy with A&M, I hope he gets everything he wants.

Her schedule sounds exhausting! I hope she finds a school that is perfect for her.

Once my son gets accepted, he will be on cloud nine. Just today, he was going over possibilities for majors and is now considering political science. He really doesn't know what he wants to do, other than going into the military and becoming an officer. I think a lot of kids are that way and bounce from one idea to another. At least I hope he's not the only one. :rotfl:

Good luck to your daughter on her auditions! It sounds like she is very talented.

Very true!

A non-resident student who holds a competitive academic scholarship of at least $1000 (or the amount required for eligibility by the Texas Education Code) for the academic year or summer for which the student is enrolled may be eligible to pay the fees and charges required of Texas residents without regard to the length of time the student has resided in Texas. The student must have competed with other students, including Texas residents, for the scholarship and the scholarship must be awarded by a Texas A&M University college or departmental scholarship committee or university representative. An outside donor may be consulted for input by the college or departmental unit, however outside donor(s) may not make the final selection of the student recipient for a scholarship.

Students may receive this waiver at the discretion of the University and in compliance with the limit on the number of waivers allowed by the State of Texas. Non-resident distance education students who reside outside the state of Texas pay a teaching fee in lieu of tuition, and are not eligible for this or other non-resident tuition waivers.

Hope he hears back soon!!

Thank you again, Gina! You have been very helpful. He knows that it takes time for the school to make decisions, but he has still been checking every day.

That's strange. I hope they receive them soon. I don't understand why they aren't all sent electronically. Did she have the right school code on the SAT website?

My DD is a junior this year, but I've been following your thread to get information on what we need to be doing.

I was looking at a website (that I probably found on this thread):

http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandr.../university-of-illinois-urbana-champaign-1775

It shows whatever school you want to look at and gives a lot of information, but there is a lot of information that is locked and the only way you can view it is to pay their $30 yearly subscription.

Has anyone done this and is it worth it? It seems like there is a lot of information at your fingertips without having to go to each school's website to get what you're looking for. But, if there's something similar that I don't have to pay for that would be even better.

Thanks for any opinions!

What a pain! I am so glad you got to schedule the audition anyway. Does your DD get to schedule her auditions on different dates or do the schools dictate them. Most of our DDs schools only have one or two choices for audition dates. When is your DDs first audition?

Congrats to your daughter for getting the apps done!
Good luck! So great that you will hear before Christmas!!!

She is very busy. A lot of girls her age only do dance and not both dance and theater and they dance 15-20 hours a week. I could spot them at the last audition, they are really good so I hope by auditioning at a few less popular programs DD will stand a better chance.

I have no experience with this. I just go to the website or to college prowler or college confidential or if your school uses noviance, they all provide information. I find it very helpful to look at each schools Common Data Set which is what most directories use to compile their information.

On the CollegeBoard's website, you enter the name of the college and it locates it in their inventory of schools and you choose it. I have a print out of all of the schools that her SATs were sent to - directly off of the CB website itself! Who knows!

Just checking in. My DD was off today, and I am so blown away. She is maturing...she told me she did her laundry, wrote college essay, and also wrote essays for a couple scholarship applications. And I didn't have to nag.

Now the downside...she is doing poorly in Honors Calculus. Going to have to have big conversation with her tonight when she gets home from work, and get conference scheduled with teacher. We received appointment time for yesterday at 7pm in today's mail...what a mess.

I will conclude on the positive. She made appointment for us to re-visit local state school for their STEM Open House. My DH is happy about this. It is his favorite school from the ones we have visited.

We received her senior pictures, so now I just need to get frames and think about announcements.

Egads!!

Got the email that next week is the meeting for the Seniors to get info on ordering their caps/gowns/stoles/medallion/tassels and any extra goodies... Along with invitations...

So, glad we already know what we need... they only give us 1 week to pay for our items and get our order in... (pay a deposit if you have a large order)...

I've been working on our submission for DS17's senior ad in the yearbook. I have it about done just need a few more photos that DD and DS13 are supposed to pick out.

Classes are going well.. he is enjoying his senior year!

Now, we are just waiting for housing to open up in December for DS17 to submit his application for housing and his deposit..

We got a scholarship notification from his college last week! :woohoo:

Need to contact the counselors to see what's out this year early for scholarships.. most of ours don't become available till the first of the year.

The Common App makes me want to poke my eyes out.

That is all.

:upsidedow

Is it still acting up? We got an email from DS school about all the issues that happened over the weekend. Fortunately he had submitted his ED app last week. He came home from school Tuesday and said thank God we did all of this early because everyone spent Monday dreaming out. Do you think maybe, just maybe, now he will see that not waiting until the last minute is a good thing lol????

It's nice to see them maturing, isn't it? DW just commented the other day that all of a sudden we are seeing things out of DS that just a few months ago weren't there.

Ugh on Calc. That's a tough course in general. Is she looking to go into a science/math major? If so, then she does need to really get on top of it, but if not, and she can get through it, one shaky course not attached to a future major shouldn't impact things too badly.

Ok, I have a dumb question. When DS first took his SAT, I registered him using my email account. He has since created one solely for the college process, but my inbox is getting slammed daily with college recruitment mail...at least 10-15 per day. Any ideas on how to make it stop? We know the schools we are looking at, and I read their info, but I don't need all the others.

We head out tomorrow for a final visit to DD's top choice. She's already accepted and has spent the past two weekends writing essays and applying for scholarships. The visitation process was so important in her decision. Last Spring, Baylor was her top choice and she couldn't imagine going anywhere else. Since Baylor's private, I had her add a few State schools as safety schools. She has the class rank to be an auto-admit at all state schools.

When we visited the University of North Texas, she was blown away by all they have to offer an artistic student who wants to go into a design career. UNT moved from a safety to top choice. This took a lot of pressure off since she would be admitted. She then focused on doing as well as possible on SAT/ACT for scholarship purposes. Baylor continued to contact her and offered to waive the scholarship fee so she applied "just to see." We haven't heard yet.

She's staying busy this Fall with school and continuing to dance although she won't pursue it in college. She's rehearsing for a Fall show and The Nutcracker (her 11th and final Nutcracker- I'm sure some in the audience will wonder why I'm crying at such a happy show.) She takes classes 5 days a week, 2 to 3 hours a day and assistant teaches 3 more hours. I'm not sorry that she won't pursue dance- it's a tough career!

She dropped APCalculus. She was facing her first ever C in a class that she doesn't need and putting way too much work into that C. She switched to Algebra III and that teacher let her take the two tests she had missed already and then went ahead and gave her an A. Teachers at DD's school have a lot of leeway with grades. The official policy is that they go into the new class with the old grade and then they are averaged together but this teacher gave her a chance to wipe out the earlier grades. She is also taking AP English, AP Environmental Science, and AP Govt,/Econ. The science class is also really tough but she will stick it out.

Good luck to everyone. It's an exciting yet stressful time.

he's a boy. probably not. :rotfl:

overall, I think the Common App is just .... sort of silly. What kind of white are you? Really? I know it's a diversity question, but come on ... there has to be another way to get that information. LOL

delete or unsubscribe, that's what we're doing. (I did the same when DS took the ACT in June 2012. He created his own account in March of this year)

We are driving up north tonight for a visit day tomorrow at the state school my dd is accepted to. I think the Yale converstion has passed now :-). This will be our second visit, and we will be making housing deposits, talking to faculty, aid people, eating lunch in the dining hall etc LOL.

I think I am done on the grade whining too (for now anyway), her Econ is back to 98% and I believe her stupid online AP Calc class is at an A- now too. Still a B+ in AP English, but I think she can pull that back up before the end of the semester, but even if not she can still pull the 4.0 with 1 B+.

She is in the last 2 weeks of rehearsal for our schools 1st ever fall play (that is a whole different discussion, let's just say that!), then will go into the State One Act Play after that, which then overlaps with the start of the spring musical in January.

We haven't seen anything on ordering cap and gowns yet, but I recall it coming shockingly early when my son was a senior, so I expect to see it any day now. State teachers conventions are today and tomorrow, so she is off school now until Tuesday.

I bet I get 10 college emails a day at least in my email, and she gets a bunch in hers too. I just hit delete LOL, some of them amuse me. We also get constant calls from another state school that we visited last November. We don't answer the phone, but they don't get the hint. Also from one other school we visited last spring, they have students calling and leaving us messages. Must be nice to feel wanted :-)

My husband tried to get my son to get his college act together but it ended up being one big huge useless lecture again that I ended before I told my husband to quit being so blasted annoying.

So then I had another get off your duff and figure out what colleges you want to tour conversation with my son a week ago instead. He needs a fire lit under him - not a lecture.

It doesn't help that one of his friends has decided he wants to take a year off between high school and college and made it sound good. The minute my son brought that up, I nipped it in the bud.
If he wants help paying for college, he's starting next fall.

He has found 3 colleges he is interested in and booked all 3 for tours. They are in Georgia which is what our parent criteria was for the first year of college.
He has a 4th college he is thinking about.
I need to get tuition costs and housing costs for the 3 schools to show my husband. He is still in the 1980's as far as college prices go. He is in for a shock.

DS18's AP Lit class has been working on the college essays to give the students a taste of them. He got his grade back on the first one he turned in - a big old D. So now he is working on improving that essay.
I'd love to read the first one he turned in to see how bad it was but he says he doesn't have it. Yeah - right.

Well at least the ball is now rolling.......
