Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

Wow! Lots has been happening in the last week! We're on our way home from fall break - got one acceptance with an invitation to apply for a presidential fellowship (Murray State) while we were away .... have a couple of other applications out there waiting for responses. Once we get back to reality, it will be time to wrap up the Common App and get those applications submitted. I'm pretty sure at least one has a few waived if he applies before Tuesday.

Crazy busy times ahead. Can't wait to catch up on my reading here!

JeannieNM, it seems like the students like your daughter have it extra hard when it comes to college applications. I can't even imagine how exhausting it would be to have to worry about training for auditions and performing.

Like you, we have wondered about course selections this year. My son is taking honors physics and almost moved down to the regular class. He decided to stick with it though. He'll just have to study extra hard to maintain a decent grade in the class.

That is tough for the schools where their decisions won't come out until March. It seems like if you apply early, you should get an early answer.

Congratulations on the acceptance!

The March decision date is typical in California. Almost every school where our D applied had a March decision date---it made March a roller coaster ride. Especially since her top pick was at the end of the month.

Knowing she had been accepted at an out of state, with a generous scholarship made it easier for me (not a lot easier, but at least I knew she was going to college).

Yes, the first acceptance must be nice. That's great about the generous scholarship too!

Ten apps in. Two academic acceptances and two auditions scheduled. About to shoot her pre-screen videos with hopes of being invited onto campus for an audition.

Things are still ok right now. Not stressed yet.

DD has only one app submitted. She is doing one EC and will try and get a little more done on that tomorrow, it has 5 essays and a DVD. She also told me that she is no longer stuck on going to school in CA so she wants to add some other schools to her list. She has 3-4 schools whose apps are due Nov. 30 (no EC option) but decisions won't come out until the very end of March. So far only one school offers EC, one is rolling which she applied to and will hear by Nov. 1. The rest are end of March. She is also still waiting for her last set of ACT scores which we hope to have by next week so we can send those out.

momto3gboys- I feel for you. DD is in the same boat though different major. She applied to one school that is 70% acceptance too, but she applied in dance which is less than 9% acceptance. Good luck to your DS.

It is also becoming increasingly hard to train for auditions and keep up with her school work and theater rehearsals, there are just not enough hours in the day. I sometimes questions the wisdom of AP Physics over taking another dance class. One of her friends who is making great strides in his dancing is not taking very many academic courses and many dance courses. DD is taking things like AP Physics and French 5....second guessing these decisions. I just love worrying. :confused3

California may be a great option for your DD. Lots of opportunity out there with theater/dance. My DD would love to go to SDSU, but there's no way we could afford it.

What did you mean when you wrote that your DD is doing one EC? When I read "EC" in reference to high school/college, I think "Extra Curricular" things like clubs, sports, volunteer work, etc...

I am confused with all of this lingo. We need a sticky at the front of this thread explaining what they are for parents like me!

Congrats on the acceptance and scholarship!! I think the March date vs rolling is about 50-50 here on the East coast. Of the 8 schools DS looked at seriously, about half do the March date. I think it is also common in more competitive schools....they wait for all the apps to pick the best.

"EC" was either a typo or a Freudian slip. Only in my dreams would DD only be doing one EC. I meant one EA- Early action- application.

What does your DD like about SDSU? I'm going to look at that one today with DD. DD is applying to CSULB which I think is the same app as SDSU but can't remember. I know many of DD's friends who are planning on getting advanced degrees have decided on our state school so that if they need to borrow money it is for the advanced degree and not undergrad.

Sydsim- that is great for your DD, 10 apps in. Congrats!!!! Tell your daughter to break a leg!!! I hope the video and the auditions go well.

Oh, thanks for clearing that up with regards to the EC / EA thing. I'm a teacher and in the education world, we use a lot of letter abbreviations, so this gets confusing. For example, EA means Educational Assistant in my field, so I have to translate these to the college world where they may mean something different.

When we were in San Diego in June, we visited SDSU. DD fell in love with it. It's a great research university that would give DD many opportunities, even as an undergrad student. Being right next to the beaches, was also a big draw for DD, and she has a friend there. She said that she'd do a lot of her studying at the beach. But the out-of-state tuition and living expenses in CA even with scholarships was not feasible with med school costs on the horizon.

SDSU has a theater and dance program that your DD might be interested in. She might want to add that school to her list.

I can't believe I haven't posted to this thread yet. I have a senior who is just starting to complete her applications and work on the essay part. The question to UW-Madison is so tricky! It is something along the lines of, "What goes unnoticed in your life?"

She would really like to go to school in a warmer climate, but I don't have any idea where to look. She mentioned really wanting to try out ASU. I think she would like something close to a beach/ocean though.

Any suggestions?

DD decided what the heck and she will apply to SDSU. It is just another fee and a click. She worked on the California State University Application. She is ready to submit it but wants to ask her GC a question about the GPA. It has to be California a-g courses and approved Honors courses so she does not know which of her honors classes count for the gpa. So she needs to ask him otherwise it is good to go. It was a pain entering all her courses, grades, etc. twice because it did not save the first time but she got it done. She is also waiting for her ACT scores which should come next week. Then she can submit it and two other Cal State Apps. She also started the University of California Application which is far more detailed. She has a conference call and then homework so that is probably it for college stuff this weekend. Hopefully she will get working on more essays during the week.

Welcome DisneyFan32WI ! What is your DD interested in? California has schools on or near the beach. UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, CSULB, SDSU, LMU in LA, there are lots of schools in Florida, NC, etc. Coastal Carolina comes to mind.

That question does sound a bit tricky! After reviewing DD's rough drafts of various essay questions today, my head is in a spin, so my thoughts may not be accurate. I interpret that question to mean that the applicant should think about something she does that maybe gets taken for granted or that she does not get recognition for, yet she does it anyway. The "do great things when others aren't watching" scenario. I would try to think of a specific story like helping a friend in need or a volunteer opportunity that she did because she saw a need, yet didn't get any recognition for -- something she doesn't have a plaque, award, or trophy for sitting on a mantel that screams, "See how great I am!"

I found this webpage with some draft essays on the question. Some essays are not very good, so you have to weed through them. I only read a few of them, but there was one I liked about a student who received good grades yet no one really noticed because they figured he/she was just smart, while all along, the student had to work really hard to make those grades. I feel this is the case quite often with some of the higher achieving kids. Everyone assumes they are just smart and things come easy to them. I know my DS assumes that about his sister, but when you really analyze it, my DD spends a lot of time and effort on her work where he's just happy to get it done with average effort.

Wow, she's been busy today! All of that must have been very time consuming. Keep us posted on how the CA apps go. The GPA thing is confusing, especially when crossing state lines. It's nice though that adding one more school to the list is just a few button clicks difference. I'd say, "Might as well" also!

My DD did some rough drafts to essay questions for scholarships today. Nothing got finished though because she wrote four essays, but then after some discussion, she started them pretty much from scratch again. It's so hard to find the time during the week, too. DD has a big show this weekend with her comedy sketch club at school. They do three shows a year and the first show is this weekend. The week before each show, they practice every day after school and then she still has work and volunteer commitments. I was hoping more would have gotten done this weekend with the essays, but a little at a time is better than no progress, I guess. Oh, and of course she had to pay her yearly visit to the haunted barn/cornfield in Moriarty on Saturday night which killed that whole day because she worked at her job earlier in the day and then slept in this morning after being out late last night. They've got to still enjoy life though, right?

IDoDO- I had a big smile from your post. My DD always assumes (mainly because of her LD) that she is the only one that has to work hard, that it all comes easy to her friends. She should read that essay just to remind her that is not the way it is.

I know what you mean about fun! DD was so burnt out from the end of the quarter last week that Friday she came home from rehearsal and headed out at 8 to visit with friends complaining about having to be in at midnight. Then Saturday she had play rehearsal and then danced for 4 hours and headed to balloon fiesta for the glow and the fireworks, and spent the night in town, coming home at 2 in the afternoon on Sunday.

Tell your DD to have a great show and break-a-leg!!!!

Do you set a curfew for your seniors on weekends? If so what time is it? Do you wait up for them? No judging just looking for general input.

PS I just got off the phone with the ACT to see when DDs scores would be ready. Seems the school forgot to send something with the test and so now the test won't even be going in to be graded until this coming Wed. (it was submitted to them over 2 weeks ago) and it could take another 3-5 weeks to be scored. Come on, are you kidding me, a computer could score that test in a matter of minutes. I am usually pretty mellow but this one has my blood boiling. In any other business no one would put up with this nonsense, and then there is the part where it takes x weeks to send the scores to colleges, really have they not heard of a computer. GRRRRR

WOW, it sounds like she's been busy. DD is driving me crazy these days! She says that she wants to go away to college instead of staying local but I don't see her putting a whole lot of effort into her applications. The only one that she has completed and submitted is Baylor which she says is her 2nd choice. We had a really long talk yesterday. She's on Team for the Teen ACTS retreat in December and they meet every Sunday from 3:30-5:30. It's about a 45 minute drive from our house. She said that her ideal would be A&M for undergrad and Baylor for law school. I told her that I wanted to make sure that she was choosing the school that SHE wanted and that would be best for her and that I didn't want her choosing A&M because she thought that's what I want her to do.

That would tick me off about the test scores also. Do these people not realize that these kids have deadlines to meet?!?!? I'm counting the days until DD gets her SAT scores back. I honestly think that she is hoping that she scores high enough for automatic admit so she doesn't have to stress as much about her essays.

As far as a curfew, we've never really had a strict time with any of the kids. It is on a case by case basis, depending on the activity. The kids know that they need to let me know anytime they are going somewhere other than what was agreed upon when they left the house. For example, DD wants to go to her BFF's house. Ok, be home before midnight. But she has to call and let me know if instead of hanging out at BFF's house, they decide to go to dinner and a movie. Then depending on the movie, she might have to get home later than midnight. I would rather she call me and say we're running late instead of rushing home and getting in an accident because she's worried about missing curfew. This is a small town and I know all of her friends and their parents so it would be really easy for me to check up on her if I needed to. So far, she hasn't given us any reasons not to trust her and she's a good kid so it's worked for us. And I don't go to sleep until all the kids are home. I end up picking up several kids after band competitions or debate tournaments because most of the other parents go to sleep and I figure I might as well since I'm already out. My mom always waited up for us when we were teenagers. She would usually be in bed reading a book and we'd have to go tell her we were home and kiss her good night. I really think she just wanted to smell our breath to see if we were drinking......lol.

JeanieMN, that would upset me too about the scores. What a pain. I hope it doesn't take too long to get the scores. My son got a letter in the mail last week from ACT.org stating his April ACT score was sent out with a different social security number. The middle two numbers they had were different than what was on something else. They changed it and I emailed A & M to make sure they got the last one he took since it was probably the wrong number too. They did, so that's good.

As far as a curfew, I always ask my son to be home by midnight. He has spent the night at a friend's house if he is out late and doesn't feel like driving home. I have no problem with him doing things, but he does need to let me know his plans. Camreesmom, I am like you. If my son is over at a friend's house and they want to go somewhere else, he needs to call. He's never given me any trouble though. He's the kid that helps keep his friends in line. LOL. He is determined to have a military career and is very focused.

He decided not to finish his application for Vanderbilt, which would have been a stretch anyway. He wants Texas A & M and only A & M. He had a great time at the Night-with-a-cadet program and is not interested in any other college or program. We are just waiting for him to get accepted.

He's already applied for the ROTC scholarship. I don't know how long that takes for the decision. Then he will apply for the Cadet scholarships and anything else he can think of. He said that if he gets any kind of scholarship over $1,000, the school will waive out of state tuition for people in the cadet program. I don't know if that is true or not, but that would be great.

Awwww... That really stinks that your DD has to wait another several weeks for her scores!!! I would be upset, too! I don't understand why a computer can't score it unless your DD wasn't required to use a bubble sheet for her answers. Even if that was the case, there's no excuse for it to take weeks to score! Hopefully this is her last ACT test. Based on how long it will take the test to be scored, she wouldn't even know if she had to take it again before the next sign-up deadline for the December test date It makes me mad just thinking about it! :furious:. I guess if there's a bright side to this(which is a stretch), she at least took the test early in the year and and will have her scores back before the big scholarship deadlines which are usually in December.

The weekends just fly by for them in a blur. We had fall break last week, so we all had a 4 day weekend, but where did it all go? We went to the balloon fiesta on Thursday morning for the special shapes day, but the balloons didn't fly due to high winds. They all inflated though and there was no wind at ground level.

Four hours of dance is a lot! How many hours per week does your DD dance and what kind of dance does she do? When my DD was a competitive figure skater she was on the ice 5 times a week, but not for four hours each time - usually more on the weekends and less on school nights. When her coaches moved to the rink in Santa Fe, we also had to figure in the hour commute there and back which made long days during the week. She'd try to get as much homework done in the car, but once the days got shorter (like now), the way back was too dark. By then, the girls were so pooped, that sometimes they fell asleep in the car.

As for the curfew, we also do a case-by-case basis. I don't like her driving late with drunk drivers on the road, or when I know she'll be very tired, so it's usually been 11:30pm. But on nights when there is something special going on like the Haunted Barn visit, I just tell her to keep in touch we me so I know when to expect her. The waited in line for almost 2 hours at each attraction and then they still had the hour or so drive back. This weekend there will be a party after the comedy show that usually lasts until 1:00 or 2:00am. DH, DS, and I all record the show form different camera angles in the theater and then DD and DH put together a nice video with all of the different camera angles, show credits, etc... But DD likes to take the raw footage from one of the cameras and everyone at the party watches it that night. They just can't wait for the final product (everyone gets a dvd of the show after it's all edited).

WOW, it sounds like she's been busy. DD is driving me crazy these days! I told her that I wanted to make sure that she was choosing the school that SHE wanted and that would be best for her and that I didn't want her choosing A&M because she thought that's what I want her to do.

What about breaking up the application tasks into smaller pieces so that the overall task is not so daunting for her? DD has done that because trying to do it all in one sitting does not work for her. Hopefully your DD will get going soon so that she gets into her first choice school.

He decided not to finish his application for Vanderbilt, which would have been a stretch anyway. He wants Texas A & M and only A & M. He had a great time at the Night-with-a-cadet program and is not interested in any other college or program. We are just waiting for him to get accepted.

Sounds like his mind is made up. I'll bet he will be easily accepted, too! No sense in putting in extra work for no reason. That would be awesome if he gets to pay the in-state tuition. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you on that!

IDoDis and Bluestars- Thanks, I am hoping the ACTs move faster. She does indeed fill in the bubbles so there is no reason that it should be held up for 2+ weeks and only start to be graded tomorrow. Oh well, I'm trying to let it go.

We too do the case by case basis on curfew. Just when she is coming home and has dance the next day I just can not see just hanging out past midnight. Some nights are much later but we live over 20 miles from the city where her friends are through a canyon on a major cross country interstate so I too get nervous about the drunk drivers. She does stay over in town with friends if she is out past midnight but I still stay up and wait to hear from her to know she is at her friends house. Her BFFs mom does not keep track of them at all. Also, they house sit a lot where there are no adults.

IDoDis- DD has cut back on dance so she can be in the play at school which rehearses Tues-Sat (2 hours each day). She dances Mon-Thur and Sat. Sat is 2-4 hours depending on the Sat. Mon (1-2 hours) Tue-Wed 1 hour(should be more but that is all she can squeeze in right now) and Thur is 2 hours. No Dance on Friday or Sunday.

All the audition schedules are out finally as are her dance competition dates. Amazingly there is only one audition conflict where she will have to decide which school to audition live and which to audition via DVD. There is also only one school audition which precludes her from one dance competition. (I don't like the dance competitions so DH and I are happy about that one).:cool1: Looks like we will be traveling every weekend in Feb. and one in Jan. for school auditions. Not sure how much we will travel for dance competitions I am hoping she won't do any out of town ones with 5 trips to LA and one to Denver....though there is a chance we will do the Denver trip in November if she can miss one play rehearsal. She meets with that schools rep on Friday so if she wants to apply then we will talk to the play director and see if we can go in November.

Bluestars I am glad your DS is happy with A&M, I hope he gets everything he wants.

Very true!

A non-resident student who holds a competitive academic scholarship of at least $1000 (or the amount required for eligibility by the Texas Education Code) for the academic year or summer for which the student is enrolled may be eligible to pay the fees and charges required of Texas residents without regard to the length of time the student has resided in Texas. The student must have competed with other students, including Texas residents, for the scholarship and the scholarship must be awarded by a Texas A&M University college or departmental scholarship committee or university representative. An outside donor may be consulted for input by the college or departmental unit, however outside donor(s) may not make the final selection of the student recipient for a scholarship.

Students may receive this waiver at the discretion of the University and in compliance with the limit on the number of waivers allowed by the State of Texas. Non-resident distance education students who reside outside the state of Texas pay a teaching fee in lieu of tuition, and are not eligible for this or other non-resident tuition waivers.

Just hit the first application snafu. One of DD's colleges hasn't received her SAT scores, which were sent from the CollegeBoard 3 1/2weeks ago. The school asked if the same name is on the SAT scores that is on the application :confused3 I did check and yes, it's her name on both. Funny how another school got them though.

Oh well, was able to schedule another audition though.:cheer2:
