One thing my mom really appreciated in her last few years was greeting cards. I would shop for a variety of birthday, anniversary, holidays, sympathy, etc. cards and initially also bought a box where she could organize them. Also include stamps. She really enjoyed sending cards to family, and every minor holiday (halloween, st patrick's day, etc.) always sent the grandkids cards.

The digital picture frame is another great idea. My sister gave her one several years ago and everyone could email to her picture frame. I found it a very easy way to share school plays, concerts, sports, etc.
