Pantyhose, tights or bare legs?

I liked this part:

My boss is the team leader for our entire region. She does ALL of our recruiting and meets with big wigs and who's who's every single day and she doesn't wear hose so I am certain she doesn't care that I don't wear them! LOL! :lmao:

I guess it's a good thing she is the boss b/c she would never work in my office! ;) Bare legs are not professional, period. Are men in shorts with bare legs okay too?

Our office requires panty hose or tights, bare legs is not a professional look. Neither is clevage, skirts that are more than an inch or two above the knee, or skin tight pants.

Yeah, we have gone through quite a few young secrataries. It is sad what the young generation of women consider "professional dress". :sad2:

I see no difference between tights and panty hose except that tights come in more colors. Am I missing something?

I think bare legs are fine in the summer with casual dresses and skirts, but panty hose are definitely my pick with anything else. (unless I'm wearing boots) Personally, I generally think panty hose look better and even if I'm wearing black I'll wear black "hose." To me, tights mean those thick things we wore as small children that bunched up at the knees. How can those be better than a sheer stocking? Colored tights on an adult seems downright silly to me and I don't think I've ever seen it. I certainly can't imagine anyone wearing them for business or formal attire.

I take that back, I do remember a time in the very early 80's when white tights were "in." We wore them with black China doll flats. Surely this isn't what people are talking about?

I didn't know panty hose went out!!

What if you are wearing a medium length skirt with pumps? Would you just put a bare foot in a pump? Wouldn't your foot hurt after a while?

Dare I ask if Knee-hi's are out?? :goodvibes

I always wore knee-hi's with work/dressy pants!

Knee highs are out if someone can tell you have knee-hi's on. If they are under a pair of pants, then how can the be "out"?

This is one of this agree to disgree debates.

The people who don't wear hose think they are looking young and modern and everyone who does it looks old, while the people in the pantyhose camp think they look professional and that bare legged people look bad.;)

I live in NYC where the women, especially working women, are fashion conscious and I can say that hose are back in style. The black ones are worn by tons of women in winter and night dressing in summer. Panty hose /thigh highs [for hygiene] come in flattering colors/textures and enhance the well dressed look. If you wear a cotton summer casual dress, then bare legs are the norm here. I see fashion varies according to where you live.

Not really, around here, people really just don't wear hose. My mom is the manager of HR in her office. She's 53 years old and she doesn't wear hose, actually not a single one of my office working friends of any age wear hose. Tights yes, hose no.

I prefer to think it is sad that someone couldn't get with the times and not judge someone's work skills based on something as archaic as pantyhose. That is truly sad.:sad2:

You are correct. Lots of people today do not know the proper way of dressing. Both those that do, do, and can easily spot those that have not been properly taught or brought up.

Because of these threads I've been paying attention to what celebrities have been wearing on shows like The View,Oprah etc lol they have been wearing panty hose lately. They are sheer black-not opaque tights so maybe they will be making a comeback

For me - pantyhose for bank robbing and tights for clubbing on the weekends.

Can someone post a picture of someone wearing "tights?" I still don't know what people are refering to. Are we talking about the "tights" I wore as a child in the 60's or not?

Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I LIKE the look of pantyhose with a formal or semi-formal dress. I think bare legs make a formal dress much more casual and kinda cheap looking. In fact, I'm going to a gala in April and I'll be wearing this dress...

with stockings and slingbacks.

But in that dress no one will know if you are wearing hose or not, so what is the point?

I wore hose when I worked in an office 12-15 years ago. I haven't worn them at all since then. The thought of wearing those same kinds of pantyhose today makes me cringe. However one needs only to look as far as a higher-end lingerie catalogue to see that pantyhose have come a long way even since then. So as long as you are wearing quality hose (not some "suntan-colored" garbage from a plastic egg) I don't see what the problem is. I agree that some women just cannot get away with a bare leg, be it for professional reasons or because they are at or above a certain age.

What? You're not saying - horrors! - that the black China doll flats are "out"??? Please, say it ain't so! I'm gonna have to redo my entire shoe wardrobe! I heard about these newfangled things called - Crocs? Any good?

Well, actually, the pantyhose camp knows that pantyhose look professional. Of course, this is coming from someone with legs so bad (scarred) that I haven't worn anything but slacks (eta: well, and tops ;)), for the last five years. :rotfl2:

But to say one is 'out' while only the other is 'right', is narrow-minded and judgmental. Most professional offices DO require leg coverage.

Bare legs, I can't remember the last time I wore panty hose, and I haven't worn tights since I was little.

Okay I have to give every on here a guy's opinion here. Yes I am sure that I will be totally trashed, but this is okay.

My thought on Pantyhose.. 85 percent of the women cannot pull off the bare leg look, especially in a formal, semi-formal, and professional settings. Those 15 percent that can, GREAT! Go for it! The rest of you, well put some good quality hosiery on, do not go and get the No-Nonsense brand from Wal-Mart, rather go and put a bit of effort into finding the right ones for you, no matter your size. The higher quality hosiery, such as Fogal, Pretty Polly, and other offer a wide selection of choices that will meet nearly ever woman's needs.

Another thing about the bare leg look, it makes women look like they are too dang lazy to get properly dressed for an event. Summer time, causal, relaxing, running to the store, bare legs is fine, but when you are around others who are well dressed, you have to stop and think outside of the box and stop thinking about yourself so much. Ask yourself, would your boss be proud to have you stand in front of a crowd accepting an award dressed as you are? Would you give the impression by how you look that you do not care what others think? My wife is VERY careful in ensuring that she represents her company very well, which means she wear the right type of hosiery for the right type of event. My business, there is no dress code, however, women there voluntarily wear hosiery because they know that they look more professional for the clients.

The part about hose being uncomfortable, well then you have picked out the wrong brand and probably size for you.

Again, take your time and with a little bit more effort, you will be shocked on the positive reactions you get from others.

I'm a woman and I agree with you 100%.:thumbsup2

Just read this to my husband and he completely disagrees with you. :wizard:

My boyfriend agrees with him. As a matter of fact, he said any man that says he doesn't, isn't being honest.

I think you're right. I see plenty of women of all ages wearing hose and tights.

Time to get ready for church and yes, I'm wearing hose.:thumbsup2

Neither do I. Tights, as I know them, are usually made from a heavy knit or cotton, looking sometimes like extended knee socks. :confused3

I think either is "right" or "wrong" I just think one is comfortable, looks good, is in style, and the other looks tacky and old.

I have never in 6 different professional offices and have not ever once worked in one that required hose. :thumbsup2
