Pandemic?

PP that mentioned the flu this fall got me thinking.

I wonder if whoever makes the flu vacines will have time to make a vacine for this strain of the flu before flu season starts back up again this fall.......

I read that they are already working on it.

I think they will, I think this is when they usually start looking at the strains. The story I saw said the WHO was probably going to try to include it.

The AP is reporting that state officials have confirmed a case in Indiana and 3 more in California, and the confirmed number of cases nationwide is now 68.

The CDC"s website is still saying 64 cases, but I'm guessing they'll update the site soon. I still don't see anything in the AP article or the CDC website about Orlando. Maybe because the person went back to Mexico? Or it's just taking a while to update information? :confused3

they are working on developing one, but as of yesterday they made the decision not to delay the manufacture of the seasonal flu vaccine in order to kick production in gear for the swine flu vaccine. Developing it and kicking into producing quantites are two different things.

in the CR interview they did say H1N1 was included in last seasons vaccine - though not exactly identical to the one currently circulating. They are still not sure just how effective it is - if at all...just one more of the things they are watching.....

It's already here, and it isn't killing anyone.
Yet - and no one can explain why.

Why in the world should we close the borders over a flu that responds to current medication, especially when it is already here!?.

I think I just explained why (at least twice). To buy time to see how things develop. How easily is it spread? Why isn't it killing people here like it is in Mexico? Is it becoming weaker as it's passed from person to person?

There are a lot on unanswered questions that only time will tell. A week from now this could be a non-issue or a whole different animal. The fewer people we have in this country spreading it around, the better chance we have to get a grip on the situation.

They said they have the seeds to make a vaccine but are watching to see how it progresses in New Zealand. If they start to soon and it mutates than the vaccine will not be as affective.

I have prepared my boys that with the way it is moving that there chances at this point are 50/50 that they will get it. And if so we are ready for just like any other flu season. We do have one box of Tamiflu(left from last year) so I will save it for who ever gets it first.

But again why the strain is weak I would not have a problem getting it and getting some immunity to it. Instead of getting it when it is much stronger and the Tamiflu is of no use anymore.

one thing I found interesting was CR asked Jeffrey Koplan if we were prepared psychologically. JK answered they expected panic but that they also expected denial. IMHO both are equally harmful and non-productive. Also, choosing to be aware and prepared is not the same as panic.

From an MSNBC article linked upthread:

During the SARS episode, the U.S. quickly cranked itself into full freakout mode. Each of the eight U.S. patients who contracted SARS had picked up the disease in Asia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Yet travelers donned face masks no matter where they were flying. Pedestrians in U.S. cities followed suit.

Does anybody remember a single incident of people on planes and walking down the street wearing masks in the US? Because I sure don't.

And I remember flying during that period of time and nobody in the (U.S.) airports were wearing them, either.

Sars was big up here in Toronto. Really hurt our Tourism industry.

Funny you should mention that. The same silly, inaccurate detail stood out to me when I read that, too!

New york update.

The school that had the original 8 they are now saying closer to 100 cases suspected. Another nearby school has additional cases- they said these students could be siblings from the other school.

What was upsetting was the fact that they are not suggesting family members to stay home- so if your kids have it you are supposed to carry on with your day- Which to me means walking around spreading the germs until you develop the symptoms.

All cases appear to be mild. There was one 2 year old admitted to the hospital with Swine Flu.

That's all I can remember right now. It's a rapidly spreading flu- but they STRESSED that at this point it is no more deadly than the regular flu. :confused3

Not in airports, but in the area where I worked (Los Angeles). The University that I worked for was in an area where a lot of Asian people lived. I saw people in the neighborhood walking around in masks. Totally not necessary, but they did it anyway.

It's already here, and it isn't killing anyone. It is mild. Before you decide to close the borders you need to understand the economic concequences that would have. Why in the world should we close the borders over a flu that responds to current medication, especially when it is already here!?

And if this gets into a full blown swine flu pandemic, that WON'T affect the economy? :confused3 No, by that time, we'll be scratching our heads and saying, "Dang, I guess we should have sealed the border a while ago when it would have still done some good."

In reality, 1 out of every 3 Mexicans could come across the border with a hacking cough, boils, sweat running from their pores due to high fever and carrying a sign reading, "I am carry five different deadly diseases" and the US government wouldn't do a thing to stop them, save a token few for the sake of appearance. Ironically, we are advising US citizens to avoid nonessential travel TO Mexico, but NOTHING has been done to slow the tide of travelers coming FROM Mexico, the epicenter of swine flu. :rolleyes1

If I sound jaded, I am. Living in a border state for the past 20 years and seeing the US government embrace an open border policy by virtue of the fact that they do almost nothing to enforce the border, has made me a bit cynical. We will NEVER offend the Mexican government, even at the expense of our own citizens. That's just the way it is. Our federal government really doesn't dwell on what is best for US citizens in this area and I do not expect that to stop now.

If Europe and other regions enact a travel ban on the US because of swine flu eventually (realizing that for all practical purposes, there is no border between the US and Mexico) I cannot blame them in the least. They will be acting in the best interests of their citizens, and that is understandable. Who could blame them?

I hope this fizzles out. But whether it turns out to be a minor annoyance or something on the level of the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, the US will react (in regard to Mexico) exactly the same way. Politics, and not common sense, will rule. Should the border be shut down today? Heck, I can't say. But what I can say is that I do not trust the US to make a wise decision EVER on that point, given their past actions. They are simply incapable of it. The decision (We will never close the border, no matter what.) has already been made and the government will simply FIND the facts to justify that decision. And that would be true whether we had a Democrat or a Republican in The White House.

That is where my concern lies.....Less with what this swine flu may turn out to be (because that's out of our control) and more with how my government may react to it (or fail to react) because of politics. I've lost all faith with them to look out for US citizens when it comes to dealing with Mexico. After 20+ years, you wise up.

*******************************************

As for SARS, DH's company (a huge one) cancelled all travel to Asia and that was a stunner. Many other companies did the same. As someone mentioned, Toronto was hit very hard, as SARS was identified as being present there. The US got off easy. However, my friend's two small children had two of the first cases of SARS in the US. One of them nearly died and the family all flew in to say goodbye before she passed. By some miracle, she survived, because at the time, the doctors barely knew what was going on. Yes, Asia is only a plane ride away, but it's night and day compared to being next to Mexico, a country with whom we share a virtual non-border.

Here is a few updates and info......

Swine flu:
First identified in 1930
12 cases in last 12 years
1976 4 soldiers ill, 1 death in NJ
1000 paralyzed from vaccine

Transmission:
Through coughing and sneezing
Touching virus than nose and mouth(dont forget we touch our faces at least 18 times an hr)
Can't catch from eating pork

Swine flu symptoms:
Sudden Fever, coughing
Extreme fatigue
Diarrhea and Vomiting

Cases so far confirmed:
1,600 Mexico
US 68
Canada 6

US flu each year(I am expecting that they feel it will spread worse than this annual statistics of reg. flu)
5% to 20% get flu annually
200K Hospitalized
36k Flu-related deaths

they suggest if one in the family gets ill that all stay home. They also said that many hundreds of school age students are sick and have not been confirmed yet but they are sure they are infected with the virus. They did not say where...they just said in NYC. They did say that 2 deaths are being checked here in Ca. to see if related but they seem to think they are.

I remember back about 13 years ago we had a bad bad flu season and the hospitals were so full. It was front page news for 3 weeks. The sick had fevers up to 104 and nothing was bringing it down lower than 103....my son and I were 2 of the very sick with that virus. We had fevers of 104. We took care of each other and slept in the same room. And no kidding on the 104+....no sezures from it thank god...but took like 30 luke warm baths. This Nurse was down for the count!

HMMM....Have they said anything about the temps yet? How high?

Plus 2 deaths in California may be linked to swine flu. :sad1:

One of the reasons we haven't seen any deaths in the USA is because we haven't had the numbers that Mexico has had. Chances are, their numbers are "underreported", and they have far more flu cases than they have actually counted. The numbers in the US are too small right now to make a judgement on its morbidity and mortality.

We need to respod i bit better then this too:

With regard to St. Francis school. I find it amazing that they had an alumni event that night, meeting with current students, etc.

One of the reasons we haven't seen any deaths in the USA is because we haven't had the numbers that Mexico has had.

That, and there's the fact that we have much better health care options than Mexico.
