Pandemic?

But remember that those are CDC "confirmed" cases. Many states aren't forwarding their cases for testing and even when they do, the CDC is really backed up.

There will also be people who have a mild case that won't go get tested. The numbers may be artificially low.

Well, it happened! One of DD's close friends in her class has come down with the flu. Whether or not it's Swine Flu I don't know but the parents are having her tested. Poor thing! She says her head feels "like it's going to explode!"

Sorry to hear about that Cindyluwho, I hope she recovers quickly.

My DD came down with something that stirred up her Asthma on Sunday.

DH has had enough and put his foot down. No trip for us... I'm sad but I know he's right. I'm not sure if we're going to lose the $750 for airfare or not, but either way it's done:sad2: I hope she gets over this easily.

Bye Bye siggie countdown to Friday.]

I read something interesting on the CDC web site yesterday.. If you go to the swine flu section and then look at the side bar on the left, there's a listing for "Press Releases" (or something like that).. Anyhow - I clicked on it and was very surprised to see that 62% of all confirmed cases have occured in people aged 18 and younger.. Now whether that's due to the "spring break" students or what, I don't know - but considering you have at least one child with asthma, you need to follow your instincts.. If DH is saying "no" - and you are wavering again - then it's probably best for your particular family "not" to go..

It's a bummer for sure - and I hope you can recover your airfare - but hopefully you can go at another time when you all feel more comfortable about it..:goodvibes

I work for an airline, and most are waiving the change fees for tkts because of the flu epidemic. You should be able to apply the full value to a new tkt as long as your new travel date is within 1 year of the date the original tkt was issd. Or, they might issue a travel voucher that you can redeem within one year of the date the voucher is issd. The voucher would be the better way to go if they'll do it.

I called Continental a few days ago since we have been on the fence too the last week or so. Continental is waiving fees right now for travel up to May 15 (not sure if it changed the last few days). Everything else is as stated above.

I think we are going - but it's not until July.

Awww...I hope she feels better quickly. I've been sick since Friday night (no fever, so NOT flu). Just huge, painful swollen glands and coughing. Bronchitis now (but since bronchitis is most always viral, no antibiotics). Bummer is that, although I've used an inhaler about 10 times in the past 15 YEARS, my chest completely spasmed and tightened up yesterday. Ended up in the hospital. Took a lot of breathing treatments, steroids, etc, to be able to breathe properly.

DH says he is starting to get a chest tickle. At least he doesn't have Reactive Airways/Asthma.

The ER told me they've been getting a LOT of non-flu respiratory illnesses in the past day or 2.

Sorry to hear that but it is understandable. Try calling the airline again though. That might be useful. Sounds like they made some concessions.

Know what I learned, that there IS NO WAY to prevent the spread of an illness when a child is coughing. Sniffles yes, but a big cough, no. Even with all the bleaching, the separate bathrooms, the boiling everything in sight, keeping my DS's door shut, wiping everything down with alcohol based wipes the house, the cars... everyone still got it. As always, my poor DS is still getting the worst of it.

So now my new rule as of today is, anyone who coughs is stuck in their own room until it goes away and that includes me.

Good thing we canceled our trip ahead of the storm...

I spent the first 2 1/2 days of my illness in my room. DH didn't even sleep in there. I took my laptop, one of the house phones, my cell and charger. And STAYED THERE. Not fun. DH has a tickle today. Hope the kids don't get it! I nearly had to go back to the hospital this morning, once again barely able to breathe. Have to go out now and fill all the prescriptions, hopefully my breathing stays under control that long.

I think this non-swine-flu respiratory thing going around is potentially scarier. I know the hospital was PACKED with people like me yesterday. Staff was quite concerned. And not a positive flu swab among them!

I think that I had the respiratory thing whatever it is. It's like flu except no fever or it was like that for me.

I don't know why so many people are sick nowadays. It is a bit scary.

Thanks everyone, my DD is on the road to recovery. I, however, now have a double inner ear infection and a sore throat from the mess- I'm not great but I'm the least of it. My DS11, is a giant mess. Tuesday he came home from school with a tickle, by Tuesday night his airways so much he could barely speak (this is WHILE on all his heightened Ashma meds) had closed to the point I was seriously worried he needed an ambulance. But I had the nebulizer and albuterol right there so in 30 seconds he was improving... followed that with 10 min in a steam shower and the episode calmed down. Yesterday we were at the Dr. for DS (day before for DD) and DS is also on some high dose prednisone:sad2: AND the cough is still gaining momentum- but he says he can breathe so I am marginally calm.

Sorry to hear your family is ill. I know you are disappointed about your trip. If it makes you feel any better, everyone here is suffering big time from allergies. Everything is blooming. I may end up taking my daughter to the doctor. I think she is developing a sinus infection. My allergies have been really bad this year. If your kids already have issues, being around all of the pollen here might not have been a good idea.

Oh, and the lovebugs are here! Yuck!

Well I got my money to use at a future date with Continental but they do not have a blessed thing to send me in writing, no written policy anywhere, nothing for me to print out from the internet... nothing at all. Weird huh? I don't mind saying I do not like this one bit, I mean it's all verbal, what's to prevent them from withdrawing the agreement by next year? I do have to keep my Dr's note on hand to present it to the Airline when I rebook to have the fees waived and I guess there is a risk that they won't like my note or want something different... it's all odd. Still, I guess the promise to let me use this at a future date is something.

But, would you believe, its my own Dr that pulled through with the note because of the fluid behind both of my ear-drums shaping up to be double ear infections (I still get lots of them) and history of dizzy spells after flying NOT the pediatrician. My poor son is having trouble breathing, is on tons of Asthma medicine AND prednisone with a nebulizer treatment every 4 hours and STILL his Dr's say it's ok for him to go!!!! I'd like to know what they are on because I'd like a little bit myself! They are out of their minds:mad:

I have to call the Dr back anyway... even with all this medicine my DS is getting worse.
-----------------

Hope everyone is feeling better soon! :goodvibes

I'd be uncomfortable about having nothing from the airline in writing as well.. Maybe if you wrote to them first - with confirmation from your doctor - they in turn would respond via the mail and at least you would have "something" in writing.. It's worth a shot - don't you think? :)

ETA: Don't include your phone number (so they can't "call" you instead) and ask some specification questions such as: when this offer expires, what you need to present the airline with, etc..

Dh took ds11 to the dr today, and he has a ZPac,too. No fever, but a horrible barking cough, and drainage is making him vomit. He has state tests next week, and I'm scheduled to be induced next Thursday, so we had to get him to the dr. today. I'm just hoping we'll all be well next week!

LuvOrlandoI hope your kids get better quickly. Right before this whole swine flu my DH was sick with fever, cough. His legs were achy too but he was sick for almost a week. My 3 kids got it next. They mainly had the cough and my 4 yo had to have the nebulizer. Then allergies hit and my poor 4 yo is the worst. He can't breathe at night, his eyes are swollen and he's an itchy sneezy mess. I feel like we've spent most of the winter coughing. I'm real tired of germs- hoping for a healthier next half of the year for all.
