Ridiculous. Just because someone has an opinion does not mean it warrants respect. My FIL is of the opinion that car seats are stupid. I certainly do not respect that opinion.
That you should respect their right to have their own opinion is what is being requested, not that you respect the actual opinion.
You are right, their personal opinion never plays into weather or not they sign a bill into law.
Please don't tell me what I should respect. You are not my father. Respect is earned. Palin's political opinions have earned none of my respect.
My BIL(who is gay) is 28 and has planned on voting for McCain,
My DH and him have argued over and over...
He called my about 20 minutes ago and told me to tell DH he is voting for Obama due to this.
I didn't say you had to respect the premise of the opinion. I was just responding that of course everybody would respect that it was her opinion.
Luckily it is not the majority of the country's opinion.
Personally, I think a ban on gay marriage is vile. But Palin does have the right to her opinion.
I showed my respect at the voting booth today.
Edited to add-
Hell has frozen over. I just agreed with Master Mason.![]()
That is not imposing their beliefs on the country. There is also a tried and true method of overcoming a presidential veto, so that can be over rulled.
Imposing your beliefs is dictitorial, and last I checked we don't have a dictatorship.
Did you read what I wrote???????????????????
You don't respect the idea that someone can have an idea of their own that you disagree with????????????
you have got to be kidding me.
When that bill is on the presidents desk, the Presidents personal OPINION will DICTATE...
And if he vetos it, then the congress can over ride that and his will is not followed. It has happened 50% of the time to our current president.
So the president can(50% of the time) impose his/her personal opinion, thanks for the stats.
Ok, they can sometimes impose their will to stop a law, but they have no authority to impose their will by making a law.
To use gay marriage as the example, since this is a states issue, as already decided by the supreme court, the president can not make an executive decision to ban gay marriage.
If we're going to support Colin Powell for breaking with his party, she deserves to be respected for her opinion as well.
But he/she might be able to veto(with success) a federal gay rights law, correct?
I don't see how you can make that comparison...
Powell broke with his party. In doing that, he doesn't stand to deny rights to an entire minority group.
Respect? When she starts showing respect to the people of this nation, I'll show respect for her. Until then, I have none. At all...
You too missed the point, you were not being asked to respect the actual opinion, just that she has a right to have it.
