painted countertop!

I'm glad to hear it works! I plan on painting our countertops this summer! How bad is the smell? Do you need a lot of ventalation? We are plagued with allergies and try to use low-odor paint for this reason.

OP here - I thought the smell was pretty bad. Not sure about allergies, etc. - but in a small bathroom with the fan running, it still was pretty overwhelming. But the result was worth the smell to me!

how many coats does the kitchen counter laminate paint require?

i too have the 'retro' look:rolleyes1

in really good shape, just so dated.

i've lived thru one kitchen rehab that took forever in another house (using a contractor no less:mad:), don't want to go there again...this sounds like a great idea!

we're in finishing stages of putting up our replacement section of pool decking:banana:. our old pool needed replaced-badly, found a good deal on one the end of season but contractors insisted we take down the 12 X 16 portion near it 1st.:headache:Today is the day i finally get to use it, hooray.

I only did one coat in our bathroom. But since the counter was pink, and I did dark gray - it covered well. If you want to go lighter over darker counters, it might take multiple coats.

WOW did it come out nice! I had the pink counter tops in my hall bath. My son & his friend covered it in tile. I still have the "ugly" pink counter tops in my kitchen. I didn't want a tiled counter, not for my kitchen. I have a large area that would have needed it and even with my son & his friend doing it, it would have been very expensive. They tiled my back splash * all around the kitchen with light gray and a splash of dark gray tiles. Maybe I will get the courage to paint the counter tops gray now...:goodvibes

Do you have a picture? I'm thinking about grey for our kitchen..it will be a big project and the savings for it is waaaaayyy off. we have an ancient Caloric harvest gold stove, mottled gold counter tops and horrid cabinets taht we've tried with different painting treatments and they still look crappy. The original wood is just that ugly stuff.

For those of you who have already used the rustoleum how did you prep the counter top to paint?

DH and I hate out countertops! We have a house built in 1964, and our countertops are white with pink and gray flecks. Very 60's.

OMG :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I can't believe you have those countertops. My mother has the exact same one in her house, which they built in 1959. Her kitchen has a pink ceramic backsplash and the wall paper is pink/yellow flowered. Everytime I walk into that room I just want to get a sledge hammer and rip it all out.

Thinking about doing this to spruce up our bathroom, pictures look great, any comments on how the paint has held up?

I want to try a Lowes product called Modern Masters Charcoal Countertop Finish Kit on our GREEN counter tops. They have videos on the Lowes site, and on the manufacturer site, showing the application process. DH says he will replace the laminate....... but I dread that, he will take forever, and complain alot, lol. Wish I could afford granite, but we want to sell the house next year, and we can't afford it. (did buy all new stainless appliances though).

We did this last year. I can't remember the color name but ours is the gray with the black and white specks. It is messy but my hubby did not have any trouble with it. There are several steps though. I will try to post a picture when I get home tonight.

We painted our kitchen cabinets black, used the counter top painting package thing (Modern Masters at Lowe's) on our green fake marble counter tops and the self sticking floor tiles that have a 25 yr warranty. It turned out great!! I will try and post pics tonight. I almost forgot, my hubby also painted our brass kitchen light nickel. I love my new kitchen and it was so cheap!! The walls were painted gray too. I have Mickey accents.

Thought you budget board DISers would be interested in my latest DIY project. I bought Rustoleum Countertop paint from Menards and painted our master bathroom pink laminate counter a really nice dark gray!

It was super easy to use (but smelly!) - the taping off took longer than the painting did! We had to wait 3 days to use it, but it seems to be holding up well...and it only needed one coat (self-sealing even).:cool1:The paint can be tinted 16 different colors and was only $20! :cool1:

What project have you done this spring that you want to brag about?

I did this to our hall bath 9 years ago when we moved in. The countertop was a lovely gold speckle laminate. It's now white and still looks great.

Whoo Hoo! Thanks for the picture of the awesome painted laminate countertops. My ugly offwhite with huge stains needs a sprucing. If I keep doing stuff around the house I won't need to keep sending in apps to Home Improvement shows! Thanks again for sharing. :thumbsup2

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I could use some opinions on color if I decide to paint laminate counter tops. We have wood floors, white cabinets with nickel hardware, white back splash. What color would you choose for the counter tops if painted? Right now the counters are a putty color, like a beige/off white. Basically ugly. Also, I recently saw on a DIY show that they painted the door of the dishwasher in a kitchen. Part of my dishwasher is this ugly beige/putty color too. I'd like to pain it black, like all my appliances are. Anyone ever paint the dishwasher door? If so, how did it turn out? Did it look good? Let me know your thoughts and opinions. Feel free to link photos of kitchens that look good color wise. I'm really undecided on what color counter tops to go with...and sometimes it can just hit you in a photo...like, yes, like that, I would like my kitchen to look like that.

Thanks all.

Yay - this thread is still going! I used the Rustoleum paint on the countertop because we were selling our house (which we did!). So I'm not sure how well it holds up after 4 months...but I would do it again!

I'm really looking forward to more pics.

The painted countertops are looking fantastic! It makes me want to do the same with one of our barely used guest bathrooms. Our guest bathroom countertop is kind of worn out looking from the previous home owner.

This thread also makes me wish I had taken pictures of our home when we first bought it--it was a bank foreclosure home. We've put so much work in it (with my handyman husband learning how to tile, lay down laminate flooring, baseboards, etc.) and its coming along fantastic!

Anyone....

I painted our hall bath with Rustoleum counter paint about 9 months ago. The counter was peach before. At first we went with a lighter shade but it was too close to the wall color. I took it back and they were able to darken it to a brown color. I really do like it. We have some dings that need to be touched up but this bathroom is used the most. I have a day care in my home and this is the one that the kids use.

The wall color is a greenish brown color. I got that free through a link here awhile ago when they were giving away quarts of paint for free. I ordered one, my sister ordered one and my sister in law ordered one. :flower3:

The vanity is not a standard size so a counter is expensive. We do plan on replacing the vanity with a standard one and a granite counter but we'll have to do the floor as well since the tile was cut around the cabinet. :headache:

The ugly gold faucet will go as well. :lmao:

I'd choose a dark color, for sure. That'll set off all your white.
