painted countertop!

Anyway, like I said. We are restaining the cabinets. We had honey like oak in the master bath. We went darker, to a chocolate like color. So. Much. Work. But they came out great. As soon as I get the bathroom clean, I'll post a pic.

Wow - that is a LOT OF WORK. Can't wait to see your pictures! :wizard:

WOW did it come out nice! I had the pink counter tops in my hall bath. My son & his friend covered it in tile. I still have the "ugly" pink counter tops in my kitchen. I didn't want a tiled counter, not for my kitchen. I have a large area that would have needed it and even with my son & his friend doing it, it would have been very expensive. They tiled my back splash * all around the kitchen with light gray and a splash of dark gray tiles. Maybe I will get the courage to paint the counter tops gray now...:goodvibes

I painted my ugly "blue marble" formica countertops a couple of years ago. I added flecks to make them look like black granite and used marine grade polyurethene to make them shiny. I bought a few square vinyl tiles at the dollar store to practice on. They came out really nice. I have a picture but do not know how to post.

Great job! I would love to see the pink before pictures.
Also anyone else adding pics of their work would be sooo wonderful. I need to do something with my kitchen.

I want to try a Lowes product called Modern Masters Charcoal Countertop Finish Kit on our GREEN counter tops. They have videos on the Lowes site, and on the manufacturer site, showing the application process. DH says he will replace the laminate....... but I dread that, he will take forever, and complain alot, lol. Wish I could afford granite, but we want to sell the house next year, and we can't afford it. (did buy all new stainless appliances though).

I'm interested to know how durable it is. I have horrendous countertops in the bathrooms. If this would work, that would be fantastic!!!

Wow! I'm stripping the kitchen wallpaper on my upcoming week off. Might just have to do the counter tops while I'm at it.

That looks great! :thumbsup2 I did sponge paint on our basement 1/2 bath counter a few years ago. Figured it isn't used much so might last. I'd really like to hear how yours holds up! Can you tell it was painted?

We re-did out bath, living room, hall and dd's room this winter, so thankfully we don't have any projects right now! Hey, there isn't much else to do in Mich. in the winter. ;)

Your countertops are awesome. I saw that paint and wondered about it.

right now we are putting the thermal window film on all of our windows. We have seven window that are 84" X 48". Looking forward to a cooler house and savings on the electric but man is it work.

By the way when I started thinking about the window film last year I got information from other Disers here on the budget board. :thumbsup2

Wow that looks great! All my project ideas have been set aside this year we had to do some work to the roof and replace the hot water heater. Thankfully hubby used to work in roofing so that was just materials but the hot water heater was a budget buster.

And dark gray was only 1 of the 16 colors...I just wanted to go darker to make sure the pink was covered. There was a really nice dark olive, too, that I liked.

There's not much to do in WI in the winter either...but I always go into hibernation mode and then get all sorts of energy for projects in the spring!

I don't think it "looks" painted. You can't see brushstrokes since it was done with a smooth foam roller. And the finish is "satin" - so not too glossy like paint tends to be.

OP, thanks for posting! I'm always interested in ideas to inexpensively spruce things up!

dallastxcpa, could you tell me more about this? What is the film/is it like a sheet or do you paint it on? How does this work? We have a huge picture window in the living room, and that thing lets in the heat like crazy! I didn't realize there might be an option other than replacing it!!

We have some home improvements planned this summer as well. We recently replaced our toilet LOL.

We want to redo our kitchen, but we dont have the money for what we really wanna do. We need new countertops...but cant afford to have them replaced by someone. DH thinks he can do it himself if we just buy the countertop..but im just not sure. We have laminate and its starting to peel and crack and all that lovely stuff. Anyone know of any good way of "fixing" or updating the countertop without having to replace the whole thing? I am thinking of doing the backsplash in tiles. We are also replacing our kitchen floor..and getting a new dishwasher. Replacing the sink and faucet as well..and repainting the kitchen...WOW all that sounds like alot hee hee lol.

Another way to update your countertops is to apply new top. They sell sheets fo the laminate at Home Depot that you use an adhesive to apply right to the current countertop. There is also edging to cover the sides and back.

The window film is made by Gila:

Reflects up to 72% of Summer Heat
Saves Energy and Money
Blocks up to 99% of UV Rays
Safe for Dual Panes
Sizes: 3'x15', 4'x15'

It's like applying a big sheet of contact paper (except it's a clear film)

It's pretty easy to apply. The hardest part is getting the windows completely clean so that you can apply the film.

Also if you look here you can watch an instructional video:

This video also shows how to use two pieces of film for large windows.
