Paid FP options coming soon to WDW?

Pure and utter made up baloney - so sick of pretenders spewing this kind of ridiculous clickbait to bring in the sucker.

This guy has a very good track record and I know for a fact he has imagineer friends. He does admit this is only a rumor and mostly because even the execs have not decided on what to do. The fact they are internally even talking about this is enough to know the changes are coming.

Exactly. They are going towards some sort of paid option.

Mickey Views also said they would be adding virtual queues for a lot more rides. So - what if for virtual rides you never had to wait in an actual line longer than ~30 mins and the rest of the time you could wait virtually while doing other things? Assume things like shows are back and certain rides with high capacity don't get a virtual line - like lets say Haunted Mansion / Pirates (3200 people per hour) and People Mover (4600 people per hour) in Magic Kingdom. Then it might make sense to price the "Lightning Pass" at $100 per person per day.

But alternatively, what if Disney did like Universal's Express Pass and made it free for guests staying at a Deluxe Resort and make it a DVC Blue Card Benefit when you're staying at a resort? Maybe there is a version of Lightning Pass that lets you ride every single ride once like Universal has and thats what you get for free.

AP discount for Lightning Pass, or maybe an "After 4pm" benefit for certain tiers of AP?

Maybe there is some combination where it works and wouldn't be so bad.

I would be super sad if this happened because we dont have a blue card we rent our dvc points. But I guess this could be another direct purchase perk. Resale market might go way down and that might be a bonus for Disney

I think the annual pass will be gone. It sorta flies in the face of what they are trying to do(if reports are accurate) in curating a certain more lucrative visitor.

As it is explained in the video, they have no problems filling the parks. That was the entire point of AP's 20 years ago to make sure they keep attendance sustainable. Disney absolutely unequivocally does not need that carrot on the stick any longer to beg people to come.

So what Mickey Views is saying is that they are more interested in targeted attendance than catering to swarms of people, a small percentage of which are actually buying merch and buying expensive food/drinks. They DO NOT want AP's who are, by disney's standards, essentially visiting the parks for free and spending no money.

I am sure their internal numbers have shown this to be true for 5+ years now but they are using Covid as an excuse to finally make the changes they always wanted to do. Also I believe Chapek has a particular hand in this coming from the parks, I believe he has been salivating to do this and now has the power and conviction to do so. It's like a perfect storm.

Yeah I'm sure resale owners wouldn't be happy. Personally I bought the minimum for a blue card and the rest resale - but history has told us that DVC Leadership is OK with a "class system" for DVC and they unfortunately have no motivation to benefit resale owners.

What is crazy about this is it essentially costs Disney nothing to let you use the shorter line.

So if they implemented something like this, they could really increase and drive people to their Deluxe resorts at $600+ per night and it would potentially seem like a "deal" since you'd otherwise pay $100 per person for the Lightning Pass. For a family of 4, that would be $400 per day, so maybe it would be "worth it" to upgrade to a Deluxe resort.

They could even run a promotion for a "free lightning pass" for the first 2 people staying at a moderate resort or something - kind of like the "free" dining plan.

For DVC owners with a blue card, it would be a return to having some kind of perks again (maybe at the expense of the AP discount though).

Will definitely be interesting to see what happens and if Disney implements it and how they do it.

Wonder what no AP's would do to the myriad of bloggers and vloggers- offer them discounts as they are free advertising or be glad to see some of them go? For the most part, I find specific ones helpful-(like Dis Unplugged, for instance!)

Perhaps, I'm not 100% sure for Disney World though. I read somewhere too that Disneyland had a lot more AP holders than Disney World does and it was a much larger problem for Disneyland (unfortunately can't find the link). Disney World gets a ton of people visiting from around the world, while Disneyland is primarily a locals park is what the article said and as such there were generally a lot more AP holders than ticket holders attending the park. DW also doesn't have grandfathered APs like Disneyland did where people had free parking and all kinds of other benefits that Disney wanted to get rid of. There are only a few tiers of APs at DW.

As such, APs are not as big of an issue for DW.

But if you think about it, at DW they've already limited AP holders a lot with the Park Pass system since you're limited to only 3 days reserved at a time - and they completely control how they distribute park passes. Lots of people booking at the hotels, lots of ticket sales? They can move Park Pass allocation away from APs and over to the "profitable customers". Don't have enough paid ticket holders or resort guests? Add more capacity to AP holders to get up to the capacity you want - less profitable, but better than running the park at a lower capacity.

We have no idea how the distribution works - and you know Disney is now using it to maximize profits. Sure they are allowing some APs everyday, but they can control that flow.

There may have originally been good intentions in introducing it, but keeping it past 2021 means that it works better than FastPass+ at predicting attendance (technically it tells you exactly what attendance will be like for any given day) and has the ability of controlling which guests come to the park. Best of all, Disney doesn't have to give guests anything in exchange for the Park Pass.

Perhaps they'll modify AP tiers to squeeze even more profits out of them - it wouldn't surprise me at all. But at this point they can control capacity and ensure max profits from the "good guests".

I wouldn’t mind paying for this occasionally especially for MK. I can understand why some would oppose it for being too costly.

If they come out with a "Lightning Pass" or what ever they call their unlimited pass, it will have to be expensive as I suspect a lot of guests would pay for it if they price it too "cheap".
While I like the idea of it being a perk for Deluxe and DVC, WDW has many more rooms than Universal does at those levels. That number of guests could overwhelm the system.
Glad it's not my problem to solve.

Yeah I didn't research the exact math behind it - but I thought perhaps because there are 4 parks there might be enough capacity to offer free Lightning Passes (or maybe discounted ones) to all Deluxe Resort guests.

I'm sure Disney will have looked at that piece though and potentially use Universal Orlando as a possible comparison.

They also have 2 more parks and 1 more water park. The math is actually fairly easy if they wanted to go that route. I suspect they will go for a straiggt cash grab as why give something for free when we can bang em for high resort prices, high ticket prices AND and upsell product!
