I will definitely give it a little bit of an a-line if I did that again

Hey everyone. We are back from our vacation to Traverse City Michigan. We had a fun time, and the girls enjoyed themselves. Tuesday morning was prettty dreary and wet ... the kid cruise we were goign to go on was cancled. But it was the cherry festival and we found other things to do around town. Here are some photos of the trip. I missed you all.

I hope you had fun! I love all the photos. Your daughters are gorgeous. In the photo above, the pose of your daughter on the right about made me laugh. I don't know if she was actually posing like that but Zoe poses like that all the time now. I swear when the camera turns in her direction she thinks she's a little fashion model. It's gotten to the point where I have to sneak a photo so I can catch her in a natural stance.

How cute are they????

Woohoo! I finally got Hannah's dress finished last night and will ship it out today. I test fitted it on Zoe since the two girls seem to be about the same size. My photos with her "modeling" didn't come out so I just put it on my largest dress form so I could have photos for my portfolio. I sure hope Hannah and Heather (MAW Big Give #1) like it.

I've done some skirts with 1.5x measurements when I wanted a skirt that isn't a full on twirl. It gives a nice volume at the hemline without using as much fabric. It really depends on the look wanted, the amount of fabric available and how many tiers will be used. I've seen some gorgeous and very full skirts with 6 tiers and can't imagine making one like that even just doubling the length for each tier. Usually if I am doing 2 or 3 tiers, I'll at least do 2x for the tiers but that still leaves the bottom ruffle anywhere from 8-10 yards in length! If I did a 6 tier skirt with the first tier at 42" and doubled the length for each tier, the bottom tier alone would be more than 37 yards long!!! Even with a ruffler foot, that's a lot of fabric to hem and gather. If I just did a 1.5x increase, that final tier would be just over 9 yards long.

Gorgeous as usual Lisa! I'm sure they will be in love with it.

Good point. I didn't mean to suggest that you would NEVER use a .5x increase just that most twirls are at leas 2x. I can't imagine making a 6 tiered twirl:faint: Maybe if it was not patchwork. I added ruffles between the layers of Littles halloween twirl and by the time I got to the bottom it was an enormous length of ruffle WITH NO RUFFLER:scared1: I'm so glad we figured out how to use that!!!

WooHoo! Need to do that again:  Just booked AKL for 4 days the weekend after Labor Day! Got DH to agree that missing 1 day of first grade in the 3rd week of school was acceptable!!! And DH said to pick AKL or WL! Our APs expire near the end of September so we're squeezing one last trip in and there are good FL resident and AP discounts. Off to plan looks! Last trip I only made two new outfits but she only wore one.

Deb

Stay at AKL!!!! I'll be there then too!!! We are there from the 5th-13th!

Traverse City looks like alot fun! I didn't realize the kids could be so little to do bumper boats and cars like that.

Spongebob is almost done for MAW Big Give #2! I am so excited since my butt is aching! I have been sewing all morning long!

BTW, can we keep them #'d. It makes it easier for me to know what goes with what, not that it really matters too much though.

I haven't done a 6 tier skirt myself but have thought about it. I won't be doing one any time soon because I can't use my ruffler for now. My newer sewing machine won't work with it and my old machine needs servicing - the needle plate is messed up which causes the thread to break often. :(

BTW - There is one "shortcut" for patchwork that I've used when quilt making that would work for patchwork skirts. Basically you cut strips of fabric with the grain of the fabric the width you want for the patchwork and as long as the total number of patches you'd need of each print. For example if you are doing 6.5" squares and need 7 patches of each print, the width of the strip is 6.5" and length is 45.5" (6.5" x 7). These strips are sewn together along the length until all are stitched together to make one large flat piece. Once those seams are done and pressed flat, the fabric is cut again across the grain into 6.5" strips and those strips of joined patches are sewn together to get the total length needed for each tier. It's still a lot of sewing and cutting but sewing strips really does makes it quicker. Using a rotary cutter also works well with this method.

I agree with the #'s. So that would make the newest family #3, right? I would hate for some dingaling around here (and that would be me!) to send something to the wrong family!

Hey guys!!
I got the eyes done on my cindy applique:

I am not completely happy with them, but i think i am just going to leave it. I tried a black outline on them, but it just loke weird to me. I think mabye it highlighted the imperfections in them. What do you guys think? Is it passable? This is the first face I have done and I am insecure about it. Is it too beginner looking to put on a garmet?

   Hooray Deb! We are just getting our AP's next weekend, but I have lots of plans for them already!!! Hope you have a blast. We are hoping to get some killer room rates in the off season so we can stay at AKL in a savanna room:cloud9: What a good DH you have!!!

What's wrong with that top???? :confused3
It didn't go on and off very well. I would just give it a little a-line next time for easier dressing and undressing. It wasnt' uncomfortable or tight once she got it on but it didn't go over her shoulders easily.

That looks great! The only thing that I can see when I look at it is that maybe her pupils could be a little bigger and you could put the little white dot in them. If there was more black, I don't think that the outline would stand out so much. Did you do the black by hand or machine? I think that I would have to hand embroider something so small that is completely round.

You did such a good job!

I think it looks really good especially for a first attempt!!! It's definitely worth using on a garment. The only suggestion I might have is to make the pupils larger. If you look at the drawings of the princesses, you'll see that the pupils are actually fairly large in comparison to their irises. As for the black around the eyes, I prefer to use black only along the top and for the lashes. I use a medium brown along the lower edge of the eyes. IMHO this helps define the eyes well without making them look like they over did the eyeliner. :rolleyes1

THAT is genius!!! I had thought about doing a like basket weave type layout but then I didn't know how I'd finish the edges. This is a way better idea!!! I can't wait to try it!!!

thanks for the help guys. I knew ya'll could steer me right. I will try enlarging the pupils a bit. I hand embrodired them so I will add some more stitches and see what it looks like.

Thanks! I know that most of the time she didn't even know I was there, but I didn't want her to wake up, and not know exactily where she was. The hospital is about 1 1/2 hours away, so between work, and the hospital, I feel like I have lived on the road.

Mom had congestive heart failure and some TIAs (mini strokes). She has lost her ability to swallow and speak clearly, but I can still understand her at times. She had a PEG tube put in today, so at least she can get some nourishment. Won't go into all the details, but we thought that we were going to lose her a few times. She is doing a little better, but she still has her moments.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. I really appreciate them all!

Hang in there Tom...:grouphug: big hugs to you and your family..

Tom and Tiffani, you, your moms and families are in my thoughts. I lost both of my parents when I was 21. My Dad died in a car accident along with my youngest sister and my Mom died after dealing with cancer for most of a year. Although it's 25 years later sometimes I still feel the loss very intensely.
