I am not making the pettiskirt right away I want to practice some more but my mom wants to order the fabric so I have to strike while the iron is hot so to speak.
I am going to make a patchwork twirl skirt and as I said I am VERY mathematically challenged. I can't for the life of me figure out how many squares I need. I need! HELP!
DD waist is 22 and I was thinking of making it 20 inches long.
This is what I have figured out so war please correct me if I am wrong!
20 divided by 3 since I want 3 layers or should I make more layers? any way would be 6.6 inche squares? Should I up it to 7 inch or lower it to 6 inch?
so tier 1 would be 1.5 times or should I do 2x's? 22(waist) x 2=44
tier 2
44x2.5=110
tier 3
110x3= 330 or should I do it 2.5 times?
So now I have no clue how to begin to figure out how many squares I need?
HELP please!
Patchwork twirl skirts are very forgiving!
For my DD who's about the same size I make 2x twirl skirts. Roughly. I make my first tier at 8 squares, cut 6.5". I sew with a 1/4" seam. Second tier is double that, 16 squares. Third tier is double the second, or 32 squares. This part of the skirt will end up 18" long.Then I put a ruffle on the bottom that's about 1.5" wide.
Then I make a yoke for the top that's 24-25" long by about 3" wide. Sew a casing for 5/8" elastic at the top, then sew it to the top tier. Then thread the elastic, put it on DD, and fix the elastic size. The yoke makes it so much easier to fit - the elastic goes through there much nicer.
You'll need 56 squares that are 6.5", 16"x width of fabric for the ruffle, and 3"x25" for the yoke.
My first tier is 6x8 = 48", tier 2 is 96", tier 3 is 192", ruffle is 288"! My overall skirt is 3x6=18, +1.5 ruffle = 19.5, + 1.5 yoke =21" total length.
The easiest thing for me is to sew the tiers together from the largest to smallest, so first is the ruffle to tier 3, tier 3 to tier 2, tier 2 to 1, tier 1 to yoke. I have started going back over all my straight stitches with an overlock, to lock in some of the ruffling that's not-so-perfect and to eliminate 'hairy' insides. I also hand-gather as I'm not so good at precision ruffling with my ruffling foot - it takes over an hour to do
This pic is from May: DD likes them long - this goes from about an inch under her belly button to probably 2" below her knee.
I'm thinking about a blue twirl with a Cindy top for our next trip!
