When are you going in January?? I'll be there from the 3-9th!

Bummer! We'll be there for Drew's birthday on the 16th so we'll miss you guys.

Here's a what do you guys think ? for you gals though................

Drew's birthday is MLK weekend. I am so bummed because from what I hear that is basically the only weekend that whole month that it is busy. Soooooo..... How bad would it be to tell her that her birthday is the next week. I mean, I really think that I could get by with it. She's not gonna know the difference just as long as when we are in the world there is a designated "Drew day." Is that terrible? I really enjoy going when it is NOT crowded!

I am not making the pettiskirt right away I want to practice some more but my mom wants to order the fabric so I have to strike while the iron is hot so to speak.

I am going to make a patchwork twirl skirt and as I said I am VERY mathematically challenged. I can't for the life of me figure out how many squares I need. I need! HELP!

DD waist is 22 and I was thinking of making it 20 inches long.

This is what I have figured out so war please correct me if I am wrong!

20 divided by 3 since I want 3 layers or should I make more layers? any way would be 6.6 inche squares? Should I up it to 7 inch or lower it to 6 inch?

so tier 1 would be 1.5 times or should I do 2x's? 22(waist) x 2=44

tier 2
44x2.5=110
tier 3
110x3= 330 or should I do it 2.5 times?

So now I have no clue how to begin to figure out how many squares I need?

HELP please!

I am soooo excited to get started on Shay Lynne's outfit. I have something cute in my brain, so I hope it translates to the fabric!

Riley and Daddy are golfing this morning (yay for feeling good today!) and Drew has a swim lesson at 11:00. I'm going to go to the fabric store in town on our way home from swim lessons and hopefully get to work! The girls are super excited to.

This is just what I needed in my life right now! Doing something fun and nice is a great way to pull out of the funk I've been in from life overwhelming me lately!

Happy sewing today ladies. Hopefully I'll have pictures later today.

I am waiting for my online fabric order to be mail (still waiting after 5days the orders just says processing!!!!:confused3 at Joann's) but do you think if I mail the package one day shipping , can I then participate? is just a matter of few hours of sewing and then mailing, please let me know as I want to participate but is just the timeframe is tight for me....

Linnette

I just extended the ship time to 7/21. I just ask that if anyone is going to ship past 7/15 that they ship it priority mail to make sure that the family gets it in time. I know it's a very short turn around. I just didn't want this family to get left out. SO, anyone that needs a few extra days, please go check it out!

I LOVE your new siggy pics, Denise! Your girls are just gorgeous!

I think you could pull it off if you just talk to her about it and tell her that you could go on her actual b'day but it would be very crowded and you wouldn't be able to do as much or you could go just a tiny bit later, still have Dre Day and get to do tons more b/c it won't be so crowded. I bet she'd go for it. Bribery usually works in our house.

I would love to meet you guys!!!!

Now I don't know what to do. Chris thinks that we need to be there on her actual birthday. I think we might because we are taking a 3 weeks driving tour of the area next summer right when school gets out so they'll have that coming up even if it is crowded. It's not as if this is the only trip they'll ever get to take.

Thanks for the compliment. Chad took that picture in his studio yesterday when I went to pick up the dance pictures. It's good to have connections!

You and me both! I was demonstrating my excellent parenting skills for my nephew yesterday when he was taking Drew's "no teeth" pictures. I told him to pay very close attention and then I offered Drew candy if she quit being a little turkey. It worked! I don't know what we'll do. I need to figure it out though because the 180 day mark for the 16th is July 20th and she is planning on a birthday breakfast in the castle!

Okay, I would make your squares 6x6" plus seam allowance, so if you like a 1/4" seam allowance, then make your squares 6.5" X 6.5" then make a 2" band at the top like this:

IMG_0124-1.jpg

Make the band the same width as your top tier. Since her waist is 22" I would double it but since 6 doesn't go evenly into 44, I would just make 7 squares for the top tier and make it 42" (or 8 squares and 48", either way) The solid top strip I would cut 42.5" x 3.5" so you have about 1 1/4" to fold over and make about a 1" casing for your elastic. For the second tier, I would double the first and make 14 squares and for the bottom tier I would make 28 squares. Let me know if it doesn't make sense. I find that having the narrow solid band at the top makes the casing much easier.

Patchwork twirl skirts are very forgiving!

For my DD who's about the same size I make 2x twirl skirts. Roughly. I make my first tier at 8 squares, cut 6.5". I sew with a 1/4" seam. Second tier is double that, 16 squares. Third tier is double the second, or 32 squares. This part of the skirt will end up 18" long. Then I put a ruffle on the bottom that's about 1.5" wide.

Then I make a yoke for the top that's 24-25" long by about 3" wide. Sew a casing for 5/8" elastic at the top, then sew it to the top tier. Then thread the elastic, put it on DD, and fix the elastic size. The yoke makes it so much easier to fit - the elastic goes through there much nicer.

You'll need 56 squares that are 6.5", 16"x width of fabric for the ruffle, and 3"x25" for the yoke.

My first tier is 6x8 = 48", tier 2 is 96", tier 3 is 192", ruffle is 288"! My overall skirt is 3x6=18, +1.5 ruffle = 19.5, + 1.5 yoke =21" total length.

The easiest thing for me is to sew the tiers together from the largest to smallest, so first is the ruffle to tier 3, tier 3 to tier 2, tier 2 to 1, tier 1 to yoke. I have started going back over all my straight stitches with an overlock, to lock in some of the ruffling that's not-so-perfect and to eliminate 'hairy' insides. I also hand-gather as I'm not so good at precision ruffling with my ruffling foot - it takes over an hour to do

This pic is from May: DD likes them long - this goes from about an inch under her belly button to probably 2" below her knee.

AHA! I was just thinking about that aurora/pink patchwork yesterday. I want to make one for Lily and I was wondering if it was in photobucket. I love that skirt!

I signed up!! I was disappointed that I missed out on the other 2. I'm so happy I get to help!

Leslie, glad you saw this. I went to PM you last night but then never got around to doing it!

I think Drew would be fine with not being there on her actual bday. Just let her know and then she gets 2 Drew days kind of, because i would still have cake and let her have fun on her actual day. We love disney in January, usually go the weekend after MLK.

I am soooo excited to get started on Shay Lynne's outfit. I have something cute in my brain, so I hope it translates to the fabric!

Happy sewing today ladies. Hopefully I'll have pictures later today.

I am glad you were able to do this give. I was trying to think of something I knew I could do well quick and after reading the TR just thought to myself that I need to sacrifice something else and do what Clay would really love! I am happy to say I am ready to start sewing, all is cut and washed!

Holy crap! I know I haven't made a patchwork twirl skirt for a reason, that looks like so much cutting and sewing. So cute! Did you make it to match a Gymboree shirt, it looks similar to the one.

Linnette

Linnette, I think that should be fine, not sure if you asked that before or after the change in date, the main thing is to be able to have it to them in time. We know how reliable you are! Isabelle's stuff was gorgeous!

Hey Denise and Shannon, if you guys are gonna find time to meet up i January I can head up for a day. Just LMK. ;) Hopefully I'll have a new car by then :goodvibes

We are going ON Lily's birthday but just by coincidence. My parents wanted to take the boys for their birthdays and chose the day before Lily's to go. So since we were gonna be there and have passes I said we were staying for another day so she could have lunch w/ the princesses at Akershush. But the boys will wear "it's my b-day" buttons the day before, which I think is cheating...Like the CM's won't notice it's ALL of the kid's birthdays...So I think it will be more special for Lily which is kinda unfair. BUT if it is totally Drews day I think you're good. :thumbsup2

Has any one done the ehow pettiskirt?
http://www.ehow.com/how_2267710_sew-boutique-style-pettiskirt.html

It has all the calculations so I can make it for mydd or at least what to do to figure out how much yardage I need but it looks like it is only one layer? Should i double it since I want 2 layers? Or am I missing something?

I checked out the Martha one but it didn't give the calculations for making the skirt for a bigger girl it was for a baby. Maybe I missed how to calculate the yardage for a bigger girl there too?

I figured out how long and wide each strip should be but I sent the info to my mom to figure out how much yardage I really need since I am VERY mathematically challenged!

I would do 2 layers. The one I did for Zoe I started with 1 layer and quickly knew it wasn't full enough. The second layer really helped. I think when I do another one, I may make a 3rd layer but it wouldn't be quite as full as the top 2 - it would mostly be there to have more "fluff" at the hem to add more volume to the silhouette.

I am not making the pettiskirt right away I want to practice some more but my mom wants to order the fabric so I have to strike while the iron is hot so to speak.

It looks like you got some very detailed explanations already. I just wanted to add that the biggest thing to consider is your total length for the skirt and then to make sure each tier is at least double the one above it. As long as it's at least double, you really can't go wrong so it's easy to add an extra patch or two to get a full repeat of the prints.

I don't want to through any more numbers at you, so I will just say that I agree about having a casing and don't forget about adding the length of the ruffle in your calculations (if you're having one). And if you want extra twirl factor make 2.5 or 3 times the previous layer for the bottom tier especially.
Good luck it's not as difficult as it sounds.

I think maybe we should go over the fullness thing again. I noticed someones post said they made their skirt 1.5x full and i thought that couldn't possibly be right. It must have been 2.5x. I think the fullness factor may be confusing to some newer sewers. 2x full would be the measurement of your DD's chest(for a twirl top) or waist (for a twirl skirt) x2 plus seam allowances. This will give you a slight gather Like this one.

For a fuller twirlier skirt you can make this measurement 2.5-3x full. I prefer a 3x full skirt for maximum twirl potential and easier math:thumbsup2

My DD10 (almost 11) has a My Twinn doll and 3 AG dolls. She never plays with her My Twinn doll, probably in part because it's hair is out of control :rotfl: It is also much larger than the AG dolls so doesn't fit in any of the fun clothes they have. She LOVES her AG dolls and plays with them nearly every day. Most of her friends also have AG dolls. Sugarbees DD12 has just about all of the AG dolls and still loves them. I don't know how often she "plays" with them but she loves collecting them and dressing them up. I want an AG doll for myself, so I guess I'm not too old :lmao:

I have also heard that the my twinn dolls hair tends to frizz out quickly.

AHA! I was just thinking about that aurora/pink patchwork yesterday. I want to make one for Lily and I was wondering if it was in photobucket. I love that skirt!

Thanks! :goodvibes The skirt's been around for over a year now and still going strong. Machine wash, tumble dry, just about every week. Though the ruffle is starting to fade. That skirt's part of the 'every day boutique' line at my house.

The top is CarlaC's Simply Sweet, with about 8 inches added to the length. While it looks adorable, DD doesn't choose it on a regular basis because she says it's hard to get on/off. We used to wear it with a white T with a Mickey on it. And for every day use it gets a white or pink plain T.

WooHoo! Need to do that again:  Just booked AKL for 4 days the weekend after Labor Day! Got DH to agree that missing 1 day of first grade in the 3rd week of school was acceptable!!! And DH said to pick AKL or WL! Our APs expire near the end of September so we're squeezing one last trip in and there are good FL resident and AP discounts. Off to plan looks! Last trip I only made two new outfits but she only wore one.

Woohoo! I finally got Hannah's dress finished last night and will ship it out today. I test fitted it on Zoe since the two girls seem to be about the same size. My photos with her "modeling" didn't come out so I just put it on my largest dress form so I could have photos for my portfolio. I sure hope Hannah and Heather (MAW Big Give #1) like it.

I've done some skirts with 1.5x measurements when I wanted a skirt that isn't a full on twirl. It gives a nice volume at the hemline without using as much fabric. It really depends on the look wanted, the amount of fabric available and how many tiers will be used. I've seen some gorgeous and very full skirts with 6 tiers and can't imagine making one like that even just doubling the length for each tier. Usually if I am doing 2 or 3 tiers, I'll at least do 2x for the tiers but that still leaves the bottom ruffle anywhere from 8-10 yards in length! If I did a 6 tier skirt with the first tier at 42" and doubled the length for each tier, the bottom tier alone would be more than 37 yards long!!! Even with a ruffler foot, that's a lot of fabric to hem and gather. If I just did a 1.5x increase, that final tier would be just over 9 yards long.

Hey everyone. We are back from our vacation to Traverse City Michigan. We had a fun time, and the girls enjoyed themselves. Tuesday morning was prettty dreary and wet ... the kid cruise we were goign to go on was cancled. But it was the cherry festival and we found other things to do around town. Here are some photos of the trip. I missed you all.
